If you're going to run a 4 speed just use a vertical gate shifter with air cylinders, solenoids & two buttons on the wheel.

Is the Muncie m21 preferred over a Borg Warner t10? Just curious what the differences are
Not sure which is better, we had the muncie for years, the gear splits sucked 3rd to 4th, went with a company called Auto Gear, they make a Muncie copy, but upgraded in many ways and you choose your gear splits.

We used the Autogear Muncie from 5speeds.com. they were good to deal with. Here is the picture of the shifter and cables.

I would go look at the Auto Gear M23 HD with the 1.17 3rd gear land speed racing you will love what that ratio will do for you when you shift that 3rd time.

Witha a heavy car and small motor I need a push start, but using a trans with very close ratios as has been suggested. G-Force G5R which is similar size and shape as a Richmond 5 or 6 speed. Vertical gate shifter and these ratios: 1.923; 1.558; 1.304; 1.109; 1.00.  5th is direct. Many ratios to pick from.

For now I'm thinking we'll plan on going with a close ratio Muncie. I have access to a Saginaw 4 speed to get things mocked up for now. As far as I know they are basically dimensionally the same. We're not working with a huge budget so the plan is to run the 270 that we have without dumping too much money into it just to get the car going and sorted out. We have a 302 that we can build into a more serious race engine in the meantime. We'll probably get a Muncie m21 to start and likely upgrade maybe to an Auto Gear or something similar down the road with our 302. Thanks for all of the input. I definitely have a much better idea of what I should be thinking about now.

Unfortunately I don't think I'll make it this year but who knows, maybe plans will change by then. I'll definitely swing by if I do.

Since I don't come here often and was asked to comment so here goes:
#1 under no circumstances use ANY overdrive without a blower or nitro. I've slowed down using our .96 OD on natural aspired gasoline.
#2 with your torque (both 270-302's use the same 4" stroke) a 3 or 4 speed works great and yes the Jack Kelly rear engine tank Lakester #664
      used cables.
#3 not a necessity but we only use 3 gears of our Tex T-101 1.61, 1.20, & 1-1 You push off at both places you don't need a lower 1st or need to
     use it.
#4 one of the fastest GMC powered Lakesters runs a turbo 400 with a truck converter and one of the fastest GMC coups uses a turbo 350. You
can push off and drop into gear it's like not using 1st in a manual.  Circle track guys use them without a torque converter and a pedal to
move oil in the trans in the pits. I don't know how.

Yes I ran twice in high gear only 85% nitro the record was 202. I qualified at 205 and returned at 215 for an average of 210 and received a red hat.

If you run a turbo 350 or 400 with a direct drive, you'll need a clutch type flywheel to replace the weight of the converter so the engine will be able to idle. Oval track pedal is a fluid bypass valve, you won't need that unless you back it into the fence & then need to drive away. If you kill the engine & coast down at the end of a run you'll need a lubrication pump to prevent frying the thing. Stock 400 ratios are 2.48 1.48 & 1.0. 350 are 2.52 & 1.52.

Yes sir! this is exactly what we do for the C4 with no converter. No Pump = fried rear bearing. We have the ignition On/Off switch set up to turn on the pump when the ignition is shut off. Pump runs from pan to pump to a tapped 1/8 NPT hole at the rear tail housing. Kinda tricky to drill the hole but doable.

Simple ol' T-10 was good for 7 records and the Two-Club.  Straight thru, get off the gas and get off before the 6.
