2017 Maine Event.  In the staging lanes we see the Gilmore and Van Blarcom Race Team 440 Dodge Charger.  Steve Van Blarcom (former Car Tech Director/200 MPH Club Member) coaching his grandson Andrew Gilmore in how to get the max speed at the big end.  He must have listened well.  Andrew achieved a speed of 145.431 mph racing in A/FRS ( 8 Liter / Fuel Real Street).

2017 Harvest Event. At speed at the one mile we see Ed Purinton driving Conrad Halberg's "About Time" number 7172. This well engineered and constructed rear engine lakester powered by a Ford 2.3 with a turbo ran 105.151 mph in the mile. It was a 17 year build that finally came to completion and was being tested. Conrad passed the car to Marcia Barker who will race it this year under the "Flying 7's" Team. Stacy Robey photo

2017 Harvest Event. At the starting line we see Team Forstall/Deluca/Knecum number 9382 Suzuki Hayabusa.  Steve Knecum riding.  At the first Maine Event in 2009 he set the record for A/BF-1350/4 (Altered / Blown Fuel - 1350 cc / 4 stroke) at a speed of 248.467 mph.  This record still stands. Steve is an outstanding motorcycle engine builder. He has provided engines to a large number of record holders at LTA and the other LSR venues.  Steve has set records at just about every LSR course in the US.

Time to recognize one of the unselfish contributors to the success we enjoy at Loring. Theresa Lynn hasn't missed many LTA events since 2009 . She sweeps the race course every morning riding her bicycle the entire length. Often more than once to ensure that the surface is free of anything that could damage a tire. She has even picked up some long forgotten aircraft parts. Then in her free time she helps out with time slips. We have a nice photo of Theresa Lynn taken at 2018 Bonneville Speed Week with Burt Munro's (The World's Fastest Indian) nephew Lee Munro.

I asked Theresa for a few lines on how she became interested in land speed racing as to my knowledge, she has never been down a race course on anything other then her bicycle. In her own words; "I got involved with Land Speed Racing in 1997.
After leaving the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota, my boyfriend, Dana, and I continued on to experience "Bonneville", an event he had read about in Hot Rod Magazine since he was a kid.
Arriving in Wendover, one of the first sights we saw was a man riding a motorcylce pulling an open trailer loaded with a racing motorcycle. We knew then that this was going to be a cool event! Later that evening, at the KOA, we met the rider, Bob Gerberich #701 from Ohio. We learned that Bob had raced at Daytona and up Pike's Peak. He had competed in Iron Butt Competitions, the Four Corners Tour and more. It was his boyhood dream to race at Bonneville. We wished him luck!
The next morning, the first day of racing, we met up with Bob again. He was bummed! Seems he got the rule book the day before he left for Bonneville and didn't read all the rules. He didn't know you couldn't ride/drive your race vehicle to the start, or back from the finish.
He needed a crew and support vehicle!
So Dana unloaded his motorcyle out of the back of the truck, loaded Bob's bike and we became Bob's pit crew! We raced with Bob until late Wednesday and had a fabulous time! We met lots of wonderful people on and off of the salt. One of those people was Willie Glass. We became good friends and the following year we were back at Bonneville crewing for him and his roadster. That's how we met Joe Timney, Joe was Willie's crew chief.
That's how I became involved with Land Speed Racing. I stayed involved because of the people. I've always told anyone who would listen that land speed racers are some of the best people you could ever meet. The work together, encourage each other and are willing to share tools, parts, tips and ideas to see each other succeed and reach their dreams. Some of my oldest and best friends have come about due to my involvement with land speed racing."

Always a pleasure to race with the LTA.  A top notch event ran by great people.  The only paved land speed venue that you can run 1-1/2 miles and never be concerned about shutdown length.  Our top speed was 221.44 in the 1-1/2 mile, not a record but we will be back with some more horsepower looking to take the record back.

2018 Maine Event. At the starting line we see the "Bookhamer Racing" number 9980 Buell Blast. Ridden by Jennifer Bookhamer to a record speed of 124.169 mph in the mile entered in M/PG-500/4 (Modified / Pushrod Gas - 500 / 4 stroke).  She came back to the line with a fairing and set the mile record at 124.246 mph in MPS/PG-500/4 (Modified Partial Streamline/ Pushrod Gas -500 / 4 stroke. This bike must have been a bit under-geared and peaked early as Jennifer set the mile and a half record in both classes about a 1/2 mph slower than the mile.  Stacy Robey photo

2014 Harvest Event. At the starting line we see Team Hatch Racing number 1445 ready to launch. Eric Hatch drove the lakester to a record speed of 74.568 mph in J/GL (3/4 Liter / Gas Lakester). Eric did a lot of fabrication to convert what I believe was a 45 cubic inch, 4 cylinder, Crosley Super Sport roadster into a lakester. Crosley manufactured just about everything in the 1950's. From refrigerators to small cars and trucks. They made ice cream trucks on what today you would call a mini-pickup chassis. Tom Shay photo.

That's a great-looking little car.  Pretty good speed for one of his engines.

I read where Crosley was big in appliance manufacturing business and so designed his cars no wider than 48" so they'd fit thru the doors of his dealers.

Stan -  that sounds logical.  Crosley is still making refrigerators and home appliances.   They only sell through independent dealers.  The cars are definitely narrow enough to fit through double doors.  Gerald Davenport around 2010 built a Super Sport Roadster (#1010) that is state of the art for a land speed car and holds some records at 107 mph or so at Ohio and Maxton.   He had a BNI tag on it but I do not recall if he ran the salt flats with it.
