Talk about 5 pounds of $hit in a one pound bag! look at the lakester with the blown early Chrysler and a driver and all of the stuff to make it run and it is packed into a standard length 300 gallon P-38 drop tank!! You have rubber extremities to drive one of those. Great pictures.

That's the first pics I've seen of Athol Graham's City of Salt Lake liner with the conglomeration of reference target sticking out the front of it, gives a pretty good picture of how unstable it apparently was. He was the first person to die at Bonneville & was chasing 400mph.

Bob Herda's liner 999, he also died at Bonneville in a fire while chasing 400.

The overdressed guy pointing and talking to Ak Miller and Lufkin in the 1966 photos is Paul James. He was a local sportscaster in Salt Lake for more than 250 years, or so. He was one of only a few local news guys that even knew, or even cared where Bonneville was. He covered the meet for many years. You brought back some memories. Someday maybe, I'll relate my first meeting with Ak Miller in 1960, the day Mickey went 406, and our last encounter in 2002.
Thanks, again, for the memories.
Been there, seen that! And now I can say I participate, with my kid and his kid, J.R...........

Otto Anzjon rebuilt the car after the 1960 crash from Athol Graham....
Otto also drove the "CoSL" in 1962....he handle the car not too bad but also he finally rolled the car at about 250 mph (to the witnesses on that day)...
Otto died later the year on cancer (leukemia)....if he was involved in the rebuilt after the 62 crash is not confirmed

Harry Muhlbach was on the wheels when the car run with the starting number 222 in 1963....this antenna like construction up front...the idea was that Muhlbach could see when the car
starts to go sideways....didn't help too much....as also Muhlbach rolled the car....a little bit tougher as Otto...in 1963 the car was called Graham Special

the wreck went back to Salt Lake....when Zeldine...wife of Athol...sold the workshop the wreck was moved to Las Vegas in a backyard up to 1979/80....
when Daryl "Butch" Graham pick them up and brought the remains back to Salt Lake....from there on he worked part time on the rebuilding...got a big push
when Richard Thomas from the USFRA came into play and helped him with the rebuilt....

in 2010 the car was finally ready for to be on display...except missing the engine to that days....meanwhile also the engine is refurbished and installed...and works...

Butch brought the restored racer to the salt several times, also he showed the car on shows in Salt Lake.....normally the car is parked in his workshop behind his house in Salt Lake

It looks to me as if the CP must have been pretty far forward due to the big canopy bulge. Its driving position reminds me of the old Auto Union GP cars of the '30s. Those must have been a bitch to drive.

Since the driver sat so far forward it was difficult to sense yawing so the tubing structure was added to serve as a visual reference.

That seating position always reminds of the early Dodge vans and sitting on top of the front axle.  :-o
Took about 3 days to get the hang of doing donuts in the parking lot again!

All those guys were my heroes growing up in the confines of the city of Chicago. I had to buy a 1953 Studebaker in 1960, just to feel the vibes of that "streamlined" road car. Not a hotrod, just a drive-in ride. They looked good on the salt!
