Front Suspension Fasteners
« on: February 08, 2022, 04:05:29 AM »
Hi guys, I'm helping out  a guy in the UK building a small Lakester; he's asked me a question about front suspension ..

The rule book refers: All front end and suspension fasteners shall be aircraft type ?self-locking? nuts or have wire or keys appropriately placed to prevent them from coming apart.

His question is "Are Nyloc type nuts OK or this application?" So, I guess would Nyloc nuts be classed as aircraft type?

Thanks in advance!

Graham

Well I sure hope so... all of my self locking fasteners are NyLoc type on my suspension... Somewhere in there it also says or used to say grade 5 minimum... All aircraft type fasteners are better than hardware store grade fasteners.

"All aircraft type fasteners are better than hardware store grade fasteners." Amen to that!

I think the intent of that rule is to require the use of "prevailing torque" nuts to prevent vibration from loosening the fastener. Nuts with Nylon locking inserts, and all-metal types are OK.
