Back in the 1960s, when we were working on the concepts for The Blue Flame land speed record vehicle and looking at supersonic speeds, we designed some alternatives to the pneumatic tires used by the turbojet powered record holders. The idea we liked the most was a large diameter metal wheel with bolted on flanges that was basically a pulley with an inverted rubber V-belt. The rubber surface would provide the needed coefficient of friction with the salt surface and the V-belt would use the same construction as the LSR tire beads. Goodyear came through as the tire supplier so we did not have to reinvent the wheel.
