Running sidecar class, no slicks?
« on: January 13, 2021, 10:37:26 PM »
So I am building a sidecar and have Avon V rated tires but having problems finding a small tire for the sidecar that is V rated, found a 13" Hoosier race compound rated for 168mph (w) but the rule book says no slicks, can I have the grooves cut into the tire to make it eligible. thanks, Ray.

Please indicate the rulebook section that says no slicks...
Have you considered an alloy wheel/tire

Contact Bill Anderson about running an alloy sidecar wheel.  I'm sure he can help.

Are you intending to run with
the BMST or the SCTA?

How big / powerful is the engine ?

What sort of speeds do you anticipate ?

Guthrie Levie Racing has been 320mph (!)
with a slick sidecar tire at the SCTA.

The Motorcycle Rule on tires 7.B.8 (which is cross referenced from the Sidecar section) does not prohibit slick tires,  but if you go non-pneumatic you need to seek permission.

A lot of sidecar folks run the rigid wheel for the aero benefits, but I use a standard wheel/tire as a personal preference.

Don't know about bikes but all the rules I have seen about "slicks" have referred to drag slicks. Different deal entirely. Certainly a lot of the LSR tires (MT and such) have no tread.

Ok thanks, all my questions have been answered. Don't want to run solid ally like Bills because I might want to do Loring as well, 17" Avons for the bike rated 149mph are good and now I can use a 13" slick W-rated Formula ford racing tire.
The bike is a chain-driven Honda CX500 Supercharged squeezed into a CF100 wingtip fuel tank, partially streamlined.
Thanks for all the Quick responses.
