New Bike for 2021
« on: November 22, 2020, 02:02:34 PM »
New bike build diary.  1032 bike has pretty much found it's limits (174.343 mph) and i cannot complain so it is being semi retired (if we don't get the new bike done, we have this one).  New bike/motor will be purpose built, with the specific purpose of going faster.  New top end arrived from Idaho (Hammer Performance).  CNC ported heads, beehive springs, big valves, corrected cylinder head chambers all designed for a little higher rev limit.  Heavy duty rod assembly (S&S) (rods, center pin, bearings, races) is here as well.  I need to pull the motor out of bike no. 2 and start the teardown, see if there are as many "surprises" on the inside as there were on the outside, lets hope not.  Chassis design to commence possibly next weekend to get the bike fully into A Bike configuration.  The one picture has a set of stock valves to compare sizes with the new valves.

Thanks for starting a build diary. I will be watching for sure. Do you have a specific class record you are going after? You mentioned S&S so I am assuming the motor is some sort of V-twin like an HD. Good luck!

Will be staying in 1350 APS-PBG and/or F.  Engine is a '94 Sportster.  Here are the S&S heavy duty rods, and they are just as pretty in person.  A shame to bury them inside a set of cases, but then again i don't want to put a view port in the cases  just to look at them.

Hi,

Is it me eyes or is the rear forked rod body not in line with the rod axis?

If it is, what's the /reason/theory behind the offset?

Subscribed anyway!!!

Think it's the machined area that makes the rod look offset.

I was going to be funny and say they "pre-bent" them to save me some time but i think they are offset for clearance.  These are heavy duty and somewhat larger than stock.  To clear each other, I think they are designed this way.  I have tried googling it (no joy) so may reach out to the manufacturer for info.  I did see this offset done to rods in a Hot Rod - Engine Master Challenge magazine article.
Motor is out and leaking on the shop floor (2-1/2 quarts in, approx 7 out it's a harley thing).  Tried the old drag bike motor drop gravity assist (pull the bike outside onto the grass and lay it over then pick up the frame up off the motor) but rear rocker box was too close to the back bone.  So, back on two wheels, some disassembly and a cherry picker later I need to continue pulling spare parts off.  Maybe some pictures to follow.

Who would have thought changing the oil on this bike would be so hard!  It almost feels like rifle season and I bagged a zero pointer.  Front end picture of the chassis today.  It should/will look different.

Engine is field dressed ready for new rods and a balanced crankshaft/flywheels.  Should be able to get this to the shop sometime this week.  Also, an example of the fine craftsmanship exhibited by the previous owner.  Strip the Torx, drill part way then quit.  Leave it for the next guy has been his M.O. so far.  These should be the last of them, I hope.

There were a bunch of Torx bolts on my Triumph that Triumph that liked to strip.  They were replaced with hex bolts and the problem was solved.
