New Production Car Land Speed Record - 330 MPH
« on: October 20, 2020, 11:21:43 AM »
Check out this video showing the SSC Tuatura which just made 330 mph. Now the world's fastest production car. You can buy one for $1.9M.

Also interesting is that the team took over a 9-mile portion of road near Pahrump, NV to make the record. As the salt flats rapidly becomes unusable for racing, I think going this way is something the racing venues should be looking at. #NoMoreRustyCars!

A two lane road with rumble strip shoulders gets might narrow at speed, what really made the Silver State classic dangerous, not so much the speed. This guy almost bought it due to wind, in a Aero car, imagine a older stock bodied car?
Hopefully another  airport gets discovered, a long one.

Does anyone know what sanctioning body this "fastest production car record" was under?

I see they did list a two way average.

A Tuatara is a New Zealand unique lizard that dates its family tree to the dinos; doesn't look anything like the car in the vid by the way.

Blast; I am only $1.9 mill short.

A Bonneville Lakester please barman.
Certainly sir; a lick of salt, a sip of gas and a twist of Lemming. More Lemming sir?
Just a squeeze.

Being a production car I wonder how many come off the assembly line per hour, or day, or week, or month, or year, or decade?

That is a sizable cash outlay for a Chevy powered kit car. I want one.

from the drivers helmet cam view, the road furniture dosent seem to be flashing by that quick,, at 330mph it takes 10.9 seconds to the mile, that is 2.72 seconds to travel a 1/4 mile,  just sayin

During the run how many seconds was he running 330 mph? I watched the video and most of his time was spent accelerating to 330mph.

Why did the car slow down when it did?  It was accelerating hard when it reached the indicated 330.  Maybe it could have gone faster.

A Volvo Hybrid Truck set a speed record at Wendover Airport. Mike Cook did the timing.

In a few years, when Bonneville becomes a mud flat, BNI can run standing kilometer races at Wendover Airport  :-D

Something's not right about that video.

According to written reports, on the 331mph run the car was caught by a cross wind and moved two lanes over onto the rumble strip.  I don't see that.  Then in the video the driver (Brit Oliver Webb) is seen shaking his arm in celebration, when he was reported to be just relieved to still be alive and said that would be his last run.

Maybe someone (deliberately?) mixed a slower run in-car with the timing from the fastest run?

To answer Beefstew's point: my understanding is that 331mph was an "instantaneous" peak speed.  The fastest (one way) mile is reported to have been at a 313.12mph average speed.

There will probably be more detail available if and when Guinness formally recognise the record.
