Magnesium wheels on the salt...a no no?
« on: August 07, 2006, 05:00:22 PM »
Obviously salt is very corrosive  :?   Is it not a good idea to run lightweight magnesium wheels on the salt?  Got a pair and am wondering if the gains of reduced unsprung mass is worth the wear they will see.  I have heard the heavier style OEM wheels are offer much more stability which is more important @ places like bonneville whereas lighter wheels would help out more in shorter courses like Maxton.

thoughts?

Requirements for correctly designed suspension vary as much as the conditions you can expect to experience.
A system that works for one might not repeat for another even the same day.
Strong, accurate, with the ability to fix it and adjust it will be of the most benefit.
Alloy wheels tend to be lighter and that helps the suspension to do more of it's designed work but at some penalty.
Mag in particular can draw in the corrosive elements from the salt and rot it from the insider out and all with the most careful care and prevention.
In a Non Destructive test of an affected casting, it will look like a sand pocket.
Because of the nightmare even the newest ones represent and worse by Swap Meet used ones that look fine they would not be the best idea.
