In the days of AMA and Earl Flanders is was required the cases accommodate the stock crankshaft.
None of them had to be from OEM original but cross fit anyway.
 FIM was not bound by such a restriction and the small FORD engines were popular over the pond but never caught on in the US.
When SCTA began to administer their own bike program with input from the racers at open meetings the "UNLIMITED" engine category was born.
 The first was 2cyl. from a KB motor.
 A couple of the bikers suggested that was the end of the road for bikes, but it never happened.
One man rule, like it is deteriorating into now will be the real death of it, no matter how you spell it. :wink:

I didn't think I would ever miss the smell of dirty feet close to the fire but when it wasn't present the house seemed empty.

Everything is better now. The smell has returned.
