Another newb...well sorta....
« on: June 27, 2006, 08:37:01 PM »
HELLO EVERYONE  :)

Name's Ali, I've run Maxton last fall and this spring, finally breaking thru with a 202.25 mph run on my 12R w/a 40 shot

.....

...........

Well...I'm looking for more before I go absolutely mental and go Turbo this winter.  I figure it would be a good idea to get a feel for Bonneville once going 200-210 before I bring the turbo 12 out for a crack @ 250 (although 220-240 is more like it

Jason McVicar hit me up and thinks I have a shot @ 210 mph given my 5'6" 125 lbs (no gear) physique.

Any advice you guys have for me would be more than welcome.  How much can I expect to spend during this whole excursion?  $1000?  I'm coming out from DC and its 33 hours drive each way according to mapquest.  I'll be heading up w/an LSR newb on a K6 w/bolt ons looking for 190s @ best!

I took off from work the 1st week of september for bubs.  Man I'm stoked!  What other 12s are gonna be out there?  Who's got the fastest 12 out in bonneville?

Pay no attention to Stan, he has trouble with carspeak as well. A $1000.00 might be a little low for the whole trip.

Bike Speak:

12R - Size of the shoe surgically removed OR Kawasaki Ninja 12R

40 shot - The amount of buckshot he pulled out of his rear when the old man caught him with his daughter. OR 40 horsepower shot of nitrous.

Absolutely Mental - Well, duh!

K6 - The aproximate grade level of the girl friend. See 40 shot above OR Suzuki GSX-R750 K6

Man I'm Stoked! - That's the drugs talking.

2200 miles each way times $3.50 a gallon at 25 mpg is $626 for gas alone.

Ah the small bike guy. The little squirts should have to wear jockey weights so us tall, heavy guys have a chance!

Don't forget the 4200 feet of elevation in your calculations. Oh, and add another 2000 feet for density altitude. And the salt ain't nothing like the asphalt for traction. Don't forget the rookie runs on the short course for licensing.

Bring chap stick so the corners of your mouth don't split from smiling so much.
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.

K6 = Suzuki GSX-R 1000 (close though  :wink: )

I can't wait....oh.....no worries about the Altitude....whatever happens MPH-wise happens...even if I run less than 200...although I think 200 won't be a problem.  I'm gearing taller and spraying later...who knows?

MILES AND MILES..........

OVER AND OVER........................

AND OVER.................................................

MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN    I CAN NOT FRIGGIN WAIT, SCREW THE COST!

Coming to Bub's--great will see ya there.
Loose the front brakes, won't need em and they hang out in the wind, bring an assortment of sprockets as you are running on a much longer course and will not have to gear for acceleration as much as top speed.
Got that bike lowered into the dirt? Get your hotel room asap as the super deal on the Bubs page won't last.Got a big bottle as you are going to be on the button longer than at Maxton?
Bonneville 2001,2002,2003,2004,and NO stinking 2005,DLRA 2006, next?
Well, sure can't complain about 2008--6 records over 200 and 5 hats from Bonneville,Bubs, and El Mirage for the team!

I'm very eager...just need to get on the ball soon w/regards to set-up, reservations, fees, etc.

Loose the front brakes      Dayum!

The rear is lowered 2" (lowering link).  I think I need to get the front forks cut internally so that they will be level.  You can't slide the forks too much w/the 12 because they "taper" earlier than they seem to.

How low is too low for the Salt?  Maybe I should get an adjustable front link?  I do have a strap but I can't see them letting me use that!

I plan on using bringing 2 small bottles of nitrous, 2.5 lbs each, and have them on rotation using a 10 lb bottle to refill them.  So essentially....6 nitrous runs

@ Maxton I could spray in the beginning of 3rd and have it run out just as I trapped...so it lasted basically about 7/8 mile (give or take).

Ali,you might want to take a look at the course map on the SCTA site for an idea of how long you will be on the button. It show long and short courses. I suspect you might be in it for a bit longer than the 7/8 mile.

He will need to qualify on the short course and should get some idea on the button hold down time. It's all part of the learning curve. Looking forward to timing all of you and hope you achieve your goals.

***EDITED:  OOPS, DIDN'T REALIZE THE LONG COURSE WAS 8 MILE AND THE SHORT COURSE WAS 5!!!  I THINK THE SHORT COURSE WILL BE FINE FOR WHAT I'M DOING....RIGHT?***

7/8 mile was in the mile @ Maxton

I presume I'm not exempt from those passes even if I have my A license w/ECTA?

I would have to use a different approach obviously for the "long" course, of course.

Jason McVicar recommended I go thru 4 miles n/a...then spray on and off over and over as I enter the last mile....by the time I get near the end I should just stay on the button....basically managing wheelspin.

Am I missing something?

Check your PM -- your private messages.  I've sent a couple at you this morning.

Think about a progressive nitrous system -- hitting even 40 hp all at once might light up your drive tire, whereas a slow build time -- say, even 2 seconds -- might allow you to keep the tire from getting away.

Good points....I'll PM you back....

But as for the 40 shot and progressive....Jason McVicar recommended that a progressive would be better...and it would be nice I'm sure....but I figured manually pulsing the horn button w/my thumb wouldn't be too mad either.  Not looking for a record...just to have fun.  Getting a progressive kit...then this....then that....I'll be driving the Geo forever if I stay this broke!

The short course is 3 miles long + shut down area approx 2miles
The long course is 5 miles long. + same as short course with one extra mile that can be soft.
Each has a 2 mile build up and a 1/4 mile timing trap and a 1mile trap.
The long course has two additional timed miles. To run the long cours you have to qualify at 175 mph or greater in the 2-1/4 trap. If you run 8 miles on the long course you will be in mud at the far end. There are over run areas for safety only. When you go to the drivers and riders meeting this will be part of the orientation and they take all of the rookies down the course to see where everthing is at so you will know when you make your runs etc.
There are course maps on the SCTA web site.and maps will be posted at the inspection area. :)

So....3 miles and 5?  Or 5 and 8?  Is it the same (just adding the shut down area?...like calling maxton 1 mile vs 1.9?)

I copied this from scta

Friday, June 23rd. 2006

We just returned from our trip to the salt to lay out our courses for this years events. The team this year consisted of Jim Dunn, Gary Allen, Gary Wilkerson, Dana Wilson, Fred Dannenfelzer, Wes Hutchens, Larry Volk, Jim Jensen and Mike Waters.

We were able to come up with two good courses, one 8 miles and the other 5 miles. We marked the courses and did our initial dragging and will return sometime next month to finish up and do the surveying.
