Ice?
« on: May 20, 2006, 04:49:01 PM »
Just had a thought... over 100 years ago Henry Ford set a LSR on a frozen lake (Lake St Clair)

Given the difficulties in getting enough length at Bonneville etc, has anybody considered a frozen lake?

It's level, it's smooth and you could find one far away from anybody who might complain.  OK, traction is a potential problem, but you could roll in some hot gravel and sand which would provide the grip.  Then come the spring when the ice melted, the surface would just sink to the bottom and being inert it would have neutral environmental effect so the tree huggers couldn't complain.

So, what are the snags?
Oh Lord, please help me to keep my big mouth shut until I know what I am talking about

You forgot one thing :? .  Do you realize how many of these guys are from southern Calif. and have never seen ice in its natural state 8) .

For your plan to work there has to be temps below 32 degrees and these boys have their winter coats and ear muffs on when it gets below 50  .

Would I use chains or should I stud the frontrunners?
Records or parts, I didn't come all this way not to break something.

 Studs seem to leave the tire @ aprox 140, and on a corvair they go through the fenders like bullets.
speed is expensive-how fast do you want to go?-to soon old & to late smart.

What if we use roofing nails?  the big heads on them would keep them from flying out!

Ice,Snow, and Cold Water all come from the refer
door and as soon as I have enough it stops.
Why would I want to drive ski, or sail in it ?
Are you trying to confuse me ?
None of that today for us though, we are going to the beach.

Ice is for Jack Daniels, we've had this discussion before. The rocket sled guy fell in the hole just before the timing lights and became inert.

I like the idea of roofing nails!   :D

Southern Californians looks an insurmountable problem - I'm sure you can't fit a wooly balaclava and ear muffs under an approved helmet.

Using internal anti-freeze such as Aquavit or Absolut Vodka would also be a no-no.

Perhaps Jack Daniels or Bud Ice could be persuaded to sponsor the meet.

In all seriousness, just after WW2 the Swedes used to hold an ice GP.  They didn't use studded tyres but they did sprinkle the surface with fine gravel and water it.  This reportedly gave them a 'surface like sandpaper'
