American assault on the steam driven land speed record:
« on: January 19, 2013, 02:11:13 PM »
The February, 2013 issue of "Racecar Engineering" has a good article about an American steam engine company, Cyclone, that is building a land speed car to retake the steam driven record from the Brits. The car is based upon the proven Poteet and Main configuration and is certainly a huge  improvement over the "Buck Rogers" design of the British car. The Cyclone people are claiming to be able to generate 200 steam horse power for their first attempt. With this amount of power and their proven aero shape I would think they would certainly overpower the 148 mph record of the Brits. Pretty interesting article and they look serious as they are talking about making their attempt this summer. This is a link to the Cyclone cite that discussed the land speed car. http://www.cyclonepower.com/press/11-29-12.pdf

I wish them a lot of luck!

Wow.  http://www.teamsteamusa.com/

It is VERY heavily influenced by the Speed Demon.

I see a lot of fluff, but not a lot of data.

Am I missing the data area of the technology?  Efficiency is claimed to be high, and the engine is claimed to be GREEN, but I'm not seeing facts. :?

My doctor told me to go out and kill people.
Well, sort of.  He told me to reduce the stress in my life.

Basically, if you are going to post the following on the Interwebbythingy, and not be mistaken for a Reality Show Producer, you need to back it up:

Become one step
closer to exciting Green Technology! Did you know
that steam engines are
cleaner than current automotive engines and can run on 100% biofuels?

As they say, BRING IT.

Steam died for a reason.

There is also Steam Speed America (http://www.steamspeedamerica.com/ )?

Video on their web site shows testing at 90mph in October.

So are there two serious American contenders for the steam record in 2013?

[Thanks, Pete.  ]

This will now bring the website up right away without alteration. These guys have already put wheels on the salt.

I hope Lee's wife doesn't watch that video, I can see the benefits of his job.  He did do a good job of smooth driving for the camera keeping up with the car, probably hard for him to drive that slow.

I only got hugged by a blond once when teching, except for Nancy, Nancy is always good for a yearly hug on the salt.  Hey Jon give Nancy a good hug from old uncle Wa when you read this.   8-)

Done, and thanks for the suggestion.  Not that I needed one, but what the heck, an extra hug doesn't get in the way of our lives, does it?

I delivered the hug AFTER warming up from spending 25 minutes removing the few inches of snow that last night's 35-mph winds moved around the yard - in +5F temps.  No need to make things extra stiff and bumpy just form the cold.
