Art Arfons and His Green Monster (new video)
« on: December 26, 2012, 01:43:16 PM »
Hi guys. I’ve made a video about Art Arfons and his Green Monster that I thought you LSR fans might enjoy—something that I hope conveys Art’s ultimate coolness.

Here’s the link:

One part of Art's Green Monster is still kicking around.  The story goes like this.

Art needed some tires for the Green Monster, Firestone obliged and made him quite a few.  Al Teague bought some of those tires and ran them for years.  My project, Black Lightning, needed a tire that would be good for around 350 mph.  John Hanson, a Vincent owner friend of mine, lived but a few blocks away from Al Teague's shop.  John asked Teague if he'd like to part with a couple of usable Firestones.  Al and John rounded up four of them, and John and I bought all four of them for the Vincent streamliner.  They had been properly stored over the years and had little to no weather checking.  Two were new, never run, and two had been run.  The rule of thumb on these tires, as there's only about 1/16" rubber covering each of the plys, is to run them until you have reached the fourth layer of cords.  They require a haircut between runs.  My horsepower in speed is nowhere close to Teague's 430+mph machine, so undoubtably the tires are good for a few more years.  One mounted and one spare will be going to the 2013 Shootout on my Vincent streamliner.

               See Y'all There,

                            Max

P.S.  Wasn't it nice of Art having the foresight to know that I would be needing those tires?

Small correction on the "Arfons tires & Betsy" there Max.
We only ran the Arfons wheel/tire combo one time. The problem we found was they were too heavy for our wheel driven application. Once they broke traction, they were like flywheels & wanted to keep on spinning. Al spent most of that run fighting the throttle. We took them off & never ran them again. These were the two piece wheels with the row of 5/8 Allen bolts holding them together. These tires are some stiff mothers, I doubt they could ever be mounted on a one piece rim.
This was all before the new generation of the 30" Mickeys & we were still running on the old Firestones in those days.

Thanks for the correction Sid.  One of the four tires that I got from Al was pretty much useless, as I run a tubeless tire.  The tire beads were chewed up, obviously from the use of tire irons, while trying to mount that stiff bugger on a solid rim.

Yep, those babies have a bead from hell on them & I think they are a 22 ply tire, from memory & something like 32 1/2" tall.
If you're planning on running one on a bikeliner, gyroscopic forces might stop it falling over!
Those wheels n tires definately have some historical value to them.

Hi Sam,
"Speed Duel" is a great read. Thanks for it. Gives real perspective on racing in the 50's and 60's.

This website is very informative also.

Happy New Year to all.

Go fast, be safe, drive it like you stole it. Love life, your friends and the USA.
