Intersting place...
Little about myself, from Toronto (Canada) area, used to race nostalgia nitro funny cars, currently building a 34 Ford with a blown 468 hemi.
Have always loved land speed racing, and have always wanted to go to an event.
Question, which is the best time to attend?
In my next post, I'll tell you about something that was unloaded at a local shop last week.  Got to run...

Welcome to our forum, we enjoy having new members and finding out their interest in LSR. The best meet is in August at Speedweek, it's the best time to meet and see the size of the operation. There are meets in Maxton North Carolina that would be a good place to visit as it's a small meet and mostly from the east coast and a couple fron Canada.
Following the info here plus the Tuesday night Chat Line(tonight) will give you even more insight to LSR.

There are 3 meets a year on the salt and 6 at El Mirage dry lake, I believe 5 at Maxton and a couple in Texas. They all provide good info. Hope to here more about your projects soon. BTW, there are scheduals to each event on the cover page

I've always been fascinated by land speed racing, nothing specifically, just the overall concept.
A little more history, when I quit the nitro funnies I wanted to build a jet car for the drags but that is another story.
When I quit racing I was 'this far' away from starting a project based on an old drop tank.  Common sense at the time (distance/family) prevailed and I went the route that I am currently on.
The last couple of weeks however, I can't help but think of how cool it might 'a been.  It is something I have always wanted to try....speed is where it's at.
My interest was rekindled when I was at a local shop and the trailer was being unloaded.  Out come this streamliner 'tri-cycle', it had a in-line motorcycle engine mounted rather high and aft the drivers compartment, running through a series of chains and shafts to drive an old Chrysler diff that was mounted backwards and upside down and an old set of Dragmaster slicks.   To be perfectly honest the whole deal was a bit crude, but still it was way too cool at the same time.
I did see a couple of body panels, but they were not on the vehicle at the time....I'll try and get some pictures ot it in the near future.
I don't know what the vehicle was, or what it would be designated as.
This vehicle is currently in a high end resto shop, so I doubt that it is being redone for racing.  It's current fate is unknown to me at the time, but I will keep tabs on it.
Anyway, I've been wanting to go to Bonneville, it will be my first, cherry-popping time.
The event in August sounds like its the one.  Anyone have opinions on this?  Would it be impossible to get a room at this point?
I do want it to be a good experience....something life altering even.

Welcome and I would love to see pictures of the car you are talking about.

Rooms at this point for Fri. & Sat. are going to be very hard to get, but it always seems some guys cancel at the last minute and list rooms.  There is always a tent, which a lot of us have used the first time.  About 1/2 mile north of the interstate on the way out to the salt is the "bend in the road" where hundreds will be camping, most in motor homes, but a lot of tents and I'm always there in my teardrop.  There are showers at the truck stop by the interstate or in town, but usually you can find someone that will let you use theirs at their motel room.

Sunday night on you can find a room and maybe Friday and Sat. at one of the casinos if you just show up.  Don't wear a "car" shirt if you do this.  You want to look like someone who is about ready to loose a couple thousand at one of their tables :D .  They probably get tired of the car guys that just drop salt on their carpets, so don't say you are there for the racing.

Racing starts at noon on Sat. if Glen got up early enough that day 8)   (don't send us to the back of the line for that Glen).  But you will probably find yourself in the pits more looking at 400+ race cars/bikes.

Sat. night is the fireworks and burning VW blocks at the bend in the road, so it is nice to be there the first days of the meet especially if it would rain (I didn't say it) out later in the week.  And then a lot of us break and go home early  .

Next best thing to do is try and get a room in Wells, NV now (60 miles west) and cancel if you can find something in Wendover, but I would only get a room over there for Fri./Sat.

c ya there,

Sum

If you are active on any of the rodding boards, I have picked up rooms on them the last couple of years.  It is amazing who has rooms, and most seem to book a couple of extras, so don't be timid, just ask.

Hey Frank
Hanging out here is going to make your Bonneville itch worse!

Doug,
I've messed up my holiday time sufficiently this year that dad and I are planning on leaving Calgary late Wednesday. We'll make a short night of it and maybe make it as far as Great Falls at best.  Then Thursday morning we'd be passing through Helena, our goal will to be in Wendover late Thursday so that we can move in during the land rush Friday morning.

I've almost got my Gas Pump ready to move outside

Maxton is fun too. Its pretty small, and pretty quiet, but there was always some interesting hardware, and even more intersting charachters. Its about a days drive from us.

The correct link to Mike's pump is:

http://1149.ca/pump/

That is a neat pump Mike. If you guys haven't been to his great site it is:

Mike had the Globes made up (see picture) for his Dad for Christmas.  They are neat.  The one in the picture (above) is mine and I have it in the shop window.  I have 2 more on order with him (don't forget Mike) that I'll use eventually in front of my shop (next picture) when I find time to make a pump.

Mike,
I know I shouldn't be here.  The funny thing is that when I used to race, 95% of my brain function went to 'how to get it done', since I started building my '34, I just haven't had that passion.  Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying the build, but something is missing.
Since I've seen that tri-cycle deal, my interest again has been given a shot and I'm finding that 'zone' again.  On the bright side it's giving some function to what would otherwise be wasted, random thoughts.
I've checked out the N49, pretty cool and nice work.  That is what I'm talking about...

I can't remember where in Ontario you're located,  but there are a few racers out there who regularly make the pilgrimage to the salt.
Gary Weldon from the Hamilton area comes with his '32 Roadster, Gay Pfieffer (I've probably really butchered the spelling of his name) from Amherstberg, and Bob Williams and the Arrow Mailing motorcycle streamliner crew from Windsor are the ones I've met most often.
If any of those folks are near you they might be worth looking up.
