1st 200 MPH Hot Rod
« on: November 10, 2012, 08:03:19 PM »
With history being a large part of our sport I was very disappointed with the new issue of Hot Rod. The repo of the SoCal liner is a jewel but the original was not the 1st hot rod over 200.
Street Rodder also stated in an editorial that the 1st flathead over 200 was SoCal. Let's not try to change history. Attached is page 14 of October, 1950 Hot Rod by Wally Parks stating that the Kenz liner was the 1st hotrod over 200. So really the first two flatheads over 200 were Bill Kenz's. Also on page 32 is Don Francisco's report of this historic event.
While I'm at it Jan. '09 Hot Rod has a picture of Seth's lakester with Sparky's 303 speed. Sparky's was the !st unblown gas lakester over 300.

I believe you will also find the first to 250 was also the Kenz and Leslie 777 liner.  Seems Roy found a way to add another 180 HP to the 2 flatties in the car.... he added a third one!  :-o

Don't be too hard on HotRod, they are Californians and when they talk among themselves they always think they are the fastest

I did like the picture of my Camaro # 630 in the Hot Rod article. I would of liked it better if they would of mentioned my 260 exit speed at World of Speed ! They had a diffrent variety of cars than they usually have.

It's a Magazine Thing.

You'd be surprised how much you learn about your own car when you read about it in a mag.

I read mags for the advertisements.  The articles are normally fluff.

You can even submit an article yourself and often it will make the mag.  And they can STILL screw it up.
My doctor told me to go out and kill people.
Well, sort of.  He told me to reduce the stress in my life.

In the 60s one of the magazines got Don Prudhomme to make a run with Paul Van Valkenburg's recording accelerometer . Later Paul told me that splashed ink made the paper unreadable and the G readings that appeared in the feature were an educated guess .
