Rollie Free: Aero test?
« on: October 30, 2012, 11:50:56 AM »

I would love to recreate this in the wind tunnel to see what the difference in drag from a "standard" tuck to what Rollie did back in '48. I know Herb Harris sold the bike in 2010 for $1 million and doubtful we could get the actual bike for a test. To really recreate it correctly, is there any photos of him in his normal position on this bike along with speed and then there can be a comparison to this position and speed.  Anyone have any historical info about this that could be helpful or know where the bike is now?

I know there is a Pitot Tube joke in there somewhere but the image is disturbing enough I can't put clear thoughts together.
Records or parts, I didn't come all this way not to break something.

I thought the salt was the whitest stuff on the planet until I saw that ass.

I'm still gouging my eyes out.
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.

Disregarding the esteemed Dr F's business card  (I received my copy in person {and immediately dipped it in Lysol}) for a minute.

I have been told that Mr Free made a pass with a SHIRT on and then with shirt off ran FASTER,
The claimant said Free's great amount of back hair lowered the Cd and then DOUG KRUSE went on to say - are ya ready? - it was . . . "HAIR - O - DYNAMICS!

Happy Halloween!

Rollie Free rode a Vincent Black Lightning.  This was a race version of the Vincent Black Shadow C (sometimes referred to as a "3").  It was the same as the shadow with plates, seat, lights and other small changes.  Rollie's Lightning was further stripped and modified.

For wind tunnel testing, any late-model Black Shadow stripped to an equivalent level of bodywork should be close.  Have to find a rider with the right amount of "ponch" to create the correct upper body and leg angle...

I'm giving Freud an edge in the aero position, plus he's a heck of a lot cuter!  He claims to have stiff riding position.
