Jim Knapp got his liner back together last night and is waiting to try for that blue hat.  He passed me as I was shooting the sunrise and I got this shot.

That post was awesome Ray, I learned something that is important. Thank You Again

That's a bit cryptic, Craig...but I'm glad ya learned something.  This entire season has been yet another steep learning curve for me.  I hope to keep learning til they scatter my ashes on the salt.
Ray, What I was learning in this case was the use of talcum powder in packing a chute. A small thing to some, but when you need it NOW a quick and smooth deployment sounds good to me.

Here's a note from Mike Cook.  He says he doesn't type very well (runs a good event, though) so I'll type it for him.  Ready?

"I would like to thank Dave Petrali from USAC & FIA, and Charlie Hennekam from AMA & FIM for making this meet a success.  Also getting a big thank you is George Poteet & Lucas Oil for the help on USAC/FIA and Mike Akatiff and Top One Oil for the FIM/AMA sanction.

Also getting my thanks are the racers for their participation and success in setting records, both world and AMA.  Every competitor here this week set a record.  That's decent.

Thanks also go to the viewers on landracing.com for "tuning in" and giving their input.  As you know - I (remember, this is Mike Cook talking) never post on landracing.com, although I do read the stuff on the site.  But right now I'm standing by Slim and Nancy thanking them.  If you want to see them keep coming out here for this event, putting in the long hours and paying for motels and fuel and food and such, PLEASE donate to landracing.com.

Thanks to everyone -

Mike Cook"

End of quoted note from Mike Cook

Jamie Williams is about ready to make a return run, going from pit end to the mountains.  I didn't get his speeds in the first run -- will get 'em for you when he's making this one.

Williams first run:  entry  206.0   kilo   207.5   mile   207.3   exit   207.3

Bike #969 is ready to run - waiting for course watchers to get into position.  He'll be running on the record he set the other day here -- 209.958 mph.  He'll have to step it up a titch or two to get that speed.

Bike 969 is under way.

'Through the five

entry   208.5   kilo  208.9   mile  208.8   exit  208.6

I got home late last night, from the shoot out, had a great time with all the usual suspects, and now catching up on all the news I was oblivious to while I was out there. Funny Slim in many respects the folks at home know more about what is happening out there in real time than many of the folks out on the salt thanks to your near real time reporting of events.

Now to get things unpacked and see if any of my photos were worth the effort.

Back to catching up on the news and congratulations on all the new record holders!

Oh and happy birthday to Pork Pie sorry I could not stay a bit longer.

I'll bet George is glad there weren't any turbine wheels exiting Speed Demon at 400+MPH for your camera to capture this year!

I'll be in touch (eventually) about those EJ-20 parts.

Photos from last year.  Out at the timing trailer where the great engine noises come whooshing through to break the usual ominous silence on the salt pan.  Jeff (Trimmers) during a slow time one day on the Cook's Shootout 2011 other race, the informal human powered vehicle un-timed trials.  I certainly would have liked to be back there this year.  Maybe next time.

Big thanks to Mike & Mike Jr., and that whole group of folks running the meet.  So many runs of bikes hitting big numbers, so many cars doing the same.  This is nothing short of fantastic.
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.

Color me confused. Earlier you said Jamie Williams was #969. Who is on #969 this morning?
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.

Jamie Williams, whatever number he's using this morning, is now on the track and through the seven mile

Entry 206.3   kilo  206.3   mile  206.4   exit  206.6

Not good enough.  I wonder if he'll try yet again. . .

Here's the rest of the morning update:

Kim Krebs and Greg Waters are done for this event.  Greg hurt a turbo shaft and is out of parts.  Don't know why Kim won't run again - I thought she was ready to run.  Whatever, they're done for now.

Al Lamb is not going to run again unless Greg betters Al's record from the other day.  Since Greg is out for the count -- I guess that Al is done, too.

And that leaves Jim Knapp in the Barnyard Bearcat.  He's suiting up and will run in a few minutes.  I'll letcha know what transpires.

Knapp is now in the car and getting belted.  Wait -- he's getting belted in.  Yeah, that sounds a little better, doesn't it?  Getting belted is for the event dinner party tonight at Carmen's.  Nancy and I will miss that feed this year -- will hi9t the road towards Skandia, Michigan, once the event ends -- we're figuring that'll be three PM or so.

Mike:

If I might be so bold as to speak on behalf all the photographers that were at the shoot out.
You run a first class event that is a pleasure to cover.
You provide better photographic access than any other meet!
Without the cooperation of you and your staff to our needs we would not be able to document the event so well and capture a historical record of the competitors efforts to achieve their goals.

THANK YOU for working with us so well and letting us do our best work to document the event!
