This came off of Cook's site and was the only thing I could find on the one percent.

"In 2001 Don Vesco’s turbine powered Turbinator raised the official wheel-driven land speed record to 458 MPH and that’s the benchmark top Bonneville Shootout competitors are gunning for. To be sure it is possible to set FIA records in lesser categories, but the current Holy Grail is the Turbinator’s unlimited wheel-driven record. The legitimacy of Campbell’s 1964 turbine powered record officially reinforces Turbinator’s claim to the wheel-driven land speed record and contenders will have to exceed it by one percent to claim the title. Moreover, Vesco can still claim the fastest exit speed with a stunning 470 mph blast on the books."

Corrected the engines on Speed Demon. Pending records noted for cars, nothing mentioned for bikes.
Extraneous numbers at the end are the page numbers so I can . . . somewhat keep track.

Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.

Dean, aren't P&M SD running big inch motor right now (well maybe not right right now but today and yesterday)?  Thought it was a 368 or something... just clarifying.

Sigh, will make the change on the motors in the NEXT one. Yes, the 362 motor in all but the first run.

Dean: You're correct - it's on the FIA website just as you quoted.  I'll check again with James and Dave today to see if there's something else on this, or if I misunderstood what was said.   The good news is that the records from this week exceeded the previous ones by more than 1%.

I feel sure that Dave Petrali will confirm that the 2012 version of FIA Appendix D has removed all mention of 1 % improvement, except in the drag racing category when an ET record has to be 'backed up'.

This rule change had been published after the Records Commission meeting in Wendover in 2011 as the intention. This brings the car and bike World's into agreement.

I understand that there were no plans to extend the period for a record attempt on the mile and kilo from the current 60 minutes.

Thanks to Slim, Nancy and Ray for the information flow and to contributors who have added 'colour' to the happenings at the Cook Shootout. If there are seven bike streamliners at the 2013 event I shall be planning on a late holiday in the USA next year.

New user here - but a long-time lurker in the UK.

Malcolm is correct.  I have just checked the pdf available for download from the FIA web site (http://www.fia.com/en-GB/sport/records/appendixd/Pages/Contents.aspx), and the 1 % requirement has been deleted.  It’s just difficult to see the missing text ... because it’s no longer there. :-D

The Al Teague record beaten by SD over the last two days was also beaten by Amir Rosenbaum in 2010.  Just not by the then-required 1% (comparing mile speeds of 407.516 mph and 405.862 mph).  So if SD had (hypothetically) run a mile average of 406.xxx mph (to set a new record under 2012 rules) we could have had the oddity of a new official record being slower than a speed set under almost identical conditions 2 years earlier.

Thanks for the run data compilation, Dean.  It really helps me see the forest, so too speak.  I'm so close all I can see is trees.

I think bike records were set by Al Lamb, Jamie Williams, Greg Watters and Kim Krebs.  I dunno about Brandon Miller and his electric whizzmobile.  Sorry...it's just so quiet that we can't hear it coming and it's a b*tch to get a photo of it at speed.  But here's one, anyway.  :-D  The early morning sunlight added some nice warm coloration to the shot.

For anyone who cares, here's the photo data:  1/160th, f14, ISO 200 hand-held with a Canon 7D, 100-400mm L lens at 400mm.  I've been using the 7D and a Canon 5D Mk I exclusively at this meet, since my 40D died at WoS.  Camera mortality is becoming a bit of a problem.  I just had the shutter replaced in the 7D and the 40D (which was my backup camera) was rebuilt last year.  Pork Pie has been kind enough to let me use his old 5D...and I'm really getting attached to it, particularly with a 28-135 mm lens that wasn't really suited to any of the crop sensor cameras...but with the full frame 5D, it's perfect.  Just like what I originally got used to using on a Pentax Spotmatic WAY back in the late 60s.

Here's one more shot from the other direction.  Same camera settings.

Good morning from the salt.  Things are just beginning to happen.  Al Lamb, Jamie Williams and "Sparky" (Brandon Miller - electric bike) are heading to their staging area at about the 2.5.  I believe that's the order and direction in which they'll run: from Floating Mountain.  (I guess it's not Floating Island this week.)

Speed Demon made the engine swap from the 368" to the 4-banger and are preparing to run asap...after the bikes.

re: Camaro:  They haven't made a full run yet and I'm guessing that they'll run AA/FALT or AA/BFALT.  I'll ask Steve when I get a chance.

Thanks for the update on the 1% rule. I picked that off of the FIA HTML page. Heaven forbid you should have the current rules online match the pdf version and the real world.
