And then they discovered, as they did in NHRA, that 2 friends who were charter members from day 1 has very similar cars and only 1 could win.
Solution: a new class based on the difference between the 2 cars.
NHRA did this (this is not a funny story, this is what happened): the weight per HP breaks used to be mathematically progressive ratios in even steps something like this:
9.5-9.99 lbs/hp
10.0-10.49
10.50-10.99
11.00-11.59*
11.60-11.99
12.00-12.49
12.50-12.99, etc.
Whooppsss, where did that* come from?
Simple, 2 guys had 57 chevies with the same engine and butted heads every week. To allow each a trophy, they made the rule split the ratio so that car 1 (sedan) was in a different class than car 2 (hardtop).
Everybody wins... except the people who can't arrange rules when they want.
