Weight Distrubition
« on: July 23, 2012, 08:23:25 PM »
I used the search option and could not really find a match to my question. We have a V4 VGCC with weight distrubition of 39% on the front and 61% for the rear, total weight around 2650, any advice? The record is 156 mph.

Body style? Aero work? Still need a much large % in the front, closer to 50/50.
Depending on engine setback and COG, you may find more up front.

  Works for us...280 mph 21/4, 294 1st mile.

Works for Formula 1 ...about the same or more, but how did you get so much weight on rear, 50% engine set back?

Just rambling...

If the pressure on the nose starts to go a lot higher than 1000lb won't you risk spinning it?

My truck doesn't apply, it has 4000 on the nose.  At 197+ it was like driving a sedan down the freeway.  You could take your hands off the wheel and it would go straight.  But before 150 it was "fun" and was like driving in the snow. It was the backs that spun.

I really don't know though.

It is a 3" chop 32 Chevy 3 window coupe. It has a long nose approximately  2' X 2.5' in front and tapers back to the cowl. No holes in the nose, just rounded. We have that much weight in the rear because we have a 31 gallon water tank in the trunk. This will be out 3rd attempt on the salt and the first attempt with that much rear weight. On our second attempt (two years ago) we had a radiator up front and around 50 50 on the weight, the tach said we had acheived 158, but the time was 134. The rear tires slipped, so we knew we needed more weight on the rear. Total weight of the car is 2680.

My GMC power roadster set it's first record in 1985 at 162 and weighed 1905#. It had a legal treaded tire at the time and showed no slip and it never has with a gasoline powered engine. It was pushing a '31 Chevrolet stand up grille. Weight was 45% front and 55% rear.....Good Luck

Thanks jimmy, this is a Ford Model B 4 cyl engine, all I have to go by is the tach and what we figured on the tire dia at a given RPM.

One racer from the Richmond Va area held several of the OHV V-8 (Ford Flattie) and he had to put a huge amount of weight in the rear to keep from spinning.

40/60 in StR works up to 210 with no tire slip at 2800 lbs. +driver.  111" wheelbase.

Not trying to be Negative Nate but 24 mph of tire slip from a 150 hp vintage banger seems a bit... high.  The tach might have said 158 but did it say it for the whole mile?

FWIW, our roadster has done 200+ with C/D sized Hemi on fuel and has never once as much as gotten sideways let alone gone completely around.  I honestly don't like the stigma that "roadsters spin" because ours doesn't.  Never specifically weighed it front to back but maybe we should because we've seem to stumble across a good setup that likes to go straight by accident.  Maybe we're just lucky.
