Cool, we could put a 132 ft. trap in the middle and make two way runs.

What happens when two cars meet in the center?  Why do you think its called a trap?
Get off the stove Grandad.  You're too old to be riding the range.

Actually someone ought to look into this.  It looks like the rent is reasonable and they will rent by the day and the rates aren't all that bad.

Quote
NASA charged nearly $5,000 for use of the runway, hangar, fuel, equipment and airfield services for that one-time deal ( The space center hosted its first private venture last month -- the takeoff of adventurer Steve Fossett in Virgin Atlantic's experimental plane, which set a flight distance record.   ). Future private flights will be scheduled around the remaining 17 shuttle missions.

That $5000 included a lot of stuff that wouldn't be needed. 100 racers at $50 a piece and it could be yours for the day.  I'll bet it is in great shape also.

The longer concrete runway at Edwards has already been used for that and permanent survey markers are in place for the Kilo and the Mile in the middle of the distance.
They even offered the use of the Paint booth for indoor pits.
We ran on a weekend when the Commercial Contractors were idle and only had to move once to allow some cross country reserves to land. They were sightseeing anyway and took as many pictures of us as we did of them.
It was tested with a Streamliner and only costs money.
You can bet it would be priced competitive with Florida.
They came over to the Honda Test facility when we were running out of room for the faster Street bikes that were running 240 but had to shut off early because of space.

Hey -

Maybe someone could approach either Moroso (the Motorsports Park is down I-95 in Jupiter) or the Garlits Museum (across the state in Ocala) to make Florida LSR a regular event?   Maybe just before Gainesville, 2007.   Come to think of it, there is a small dragstrip east of Orlando in Bithlow, maybe they would be interested in setting something up.

Start out small and see how it goes.   Could be fun.

Took a look at this thing on Google Earth and it appears to be about 400 ft wide!  Dirt shoulders about 150 feet wide on each side.

The pavement is about 2.84 miles long with an additional 1000 feet of displaced threshold pavement at each end for a total of 17,000 usable feet.  There are dirt run outs of about 1/8 mile at each end before the canals (a nice nostalgic touch for those of you who want to work on your Craig Breedlove imitations).

How about two miles in with 132 foot trap and 1.25 miles to shut down, maybe with the catch net for the carrier pilot wannabees?  The ole' clock on the wall says the Bomber will go 230 +/- at the 5 foot elevation.  I'd tow cross country to do that!

Sometime back I mentioned this subject on the Land Speed Digest - can't remember how long the thread got to be.
Perhaps someone else would do a search and post a link?

Hey guys ...... now you have no excuses to follow the British way and set FIA and FIM records on a stable surface.

We only have 10,000 feet of usable surface at Elvington, so the Americans can go faster in Florida than we can in Yorkshire.

Rental seems a fair price too - so go for it and tell me when the meeting is on!.
