You need Internet explorer 9 or Google Chrome to see the photo's.

That would be silly  since Fire Fox represents 25% of all browsers, but the photo's appear just fine on my system with Firefox.
Source code appears to be pretty straight forward simple html, so any modern browser should display it just fine.

Ed Shadle knows it, Andy Green knows it, Richard Noble knows it, ........................ the only speed that ever counts (or should that be speeds for each part of a two way process) is that timed by an independent third party and calculated by them to be in excess of the speed of sound under the temperature conditions of the day. There is no on board, self read or recorded telemetry acceptable in speed record breaking.

Whatever your fellow American (singular) may say, the true speed enthusiasts around the world are rooting for Ed with NAE to break the record  .................... doing it your way.

ps. Will your lady driver get seat time and a new fastest speed officially timed when the weather is next kind to your team at Alvord?

While I appreciate the FIA standard of external timing, technology has advanced.  The FIA now uses telemetry from cars as secondary and primary data for record purposes.  Due to the challenges of external timing and measurement, the FAI has accepted secure GPS data as proof of record for speed and time to climb records for many years for aircraft altitude and speed records.

Considering that even wheel driven cars are approaching lethal velocities, can we talk about getting rid of the lethal targets of fixed timing lights and go towards on-board secure GPS as has been proven in the far more demanding world of aerospace?

Hi Eric: Thanks for the input about GPS timing. We've been utilizing our Topcon Global Navigations system and it is as accurate as the timers
at Bonneville and three digits beyond. We installed it in our Lakester year before last to compare data and it was right on! Guiness also
accepts GPS data but we know their records are sometimes a little outside our standards. If FIA will accept our data, that will remove
the expense of hiring a timing association to set up clocks and pay for officials to stand around for days waiting for our runs to occur.

Wouldn't it be optimal to work with the FIA in having the GPS pre-certified by a known and accepted timing company who already does FIA land speed records?  And have that independent entity certifying the GPS generated times during runs?  Less expesive than setting out the lights, but still approved timing by FIA?  Everything is possible.
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.

Yes, Moxnix. That is what we are hoping for. I tried talking to SCTA/BNI about the concept and was told they are not interested.

Would you share the manufacturer and model number of that GPS and does it require a second fixed GPS station for triangulation?

I'll have to get the model number for you but the manufacturer is Topcon. We designed our network so we transmit from the nose of
the vehicle to three antenna's located 2.3 miles apart. The wireless ethernet changes nodes as we travel the distance of the course.
The Topcon system gets it's location triangulated from as many as 14 to 19 satellites. The data that is transmitted via the wireless
ethernet is captured to a mobile ground station and is simultaniously captured on the onboard racecar computer as a backup. We
actually have to pick two points in space along the track and extapolate that data to come up with the actual speed measurement.
It is very accurate and will pull 20 samples per second with an accuracy of .020 of an inch.

F104A, I have started a new thread to discuss the GPS, it is located here http://www.landracing.com/forum/index.php/topic,12033.0.html could you look at my reply and follow-up questions there?

I don't want to hijack this thread with a GPS discussion.

Thanks,

Before going to look at the GPS timing thread, there remains the ruling that when running a mile or kilometre record the period of one hour starts at entry to the mile/kilo on a first run and ends at the leaving of the same mile/kilo on the return pass, which are of course made in opposite directions to remove wind affects.

You will still need to mark these points. Yes timing lights and batteries and receivers can be a safety issue but so will the markers for the mile/kilo.

Joea - with a completed vehicle the NAE are along way ahead of much of the opposition and should be better placed to gain funding support for the high speed trials and the record runs. Just need to wake up the profitable businesses in the USA or elsewhere in the world to what is being achieved.

The bottom line folk's is (in my opinion) the fact that for better or worse, Corporate America is no longer interested is putting up sponsorship $ for anything that might bring in ANY NEGATIVE PRESS.
This includes ANY AND ALL Motor Sports as they realize that the old "Race on Sunday, Sell new Cars on Monday" is nothing but a myth.
To those who hope for, or dismiss the trials and tribulations of this Team's efforts, keep in mind that even NASCAR is loosing Multi-Million dollar Race Car Sponsors every year.
Goodyear doesn't care about our sport, nor does Firestone or Michelin.
My point is, lets all keep a positive outlook on what this team has accomplished so far, and how far they have already progressed.
They don't have any multi-millionare backing like the Fossett or Richard Noble entries.
Let's keep this all in perspective and cheer on any and all Racing endevours no matter whom they might be or from where they might call home......................  Bob

So, here's the deal....

What is the fine the BLM would impose on the team if you were to show up anannounced at a site of your choice, others than Edwards, make your run, set a record and leave the salt before the local BLM "LandoKommander" shows up and throws you off the dry lakebed????

I am willing to contribute cash to help paying the fine....if we all chipped in we could GET THIS DONE!
It is ridiculous that our(?) government prevents us with all of it's beauracracy,to use OUR land, to bring the international speed record back to the US.

Yeah and if the BLM caught them we could all get banned, Ed and crew are aware of this and are going through all of the correct procedures to get a legal permit to test and run for the record.

The FIA (and probably the FIM too) side with the law abiding by asking to see the proof of landowners permission to run at a particular site before a permit to attempt a World record is confirmed.

Failure to meet FIA/FIM regulations would result in a racer not being able to run anywhere for an official record.

In support of Glen's comment - any wilda**e attempt could result in withdrawal of BLM co-operation for any USA based speed bids. No amount of money will help then.

Of course all of the US racers would have to travel to Oz or South Africa, putting up operating costs to another level.
