1974 Norton Streamliner
« on: December 18, 2011, 02:37:30 PM »
In 1974 Denis Manning built and ran an Nito Burning Twin Engine Norton Streamliner that hit a top speed of 279 MPH.

In 2011 the streamliner returns to Bonneville at the BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials after being restored to it's original condition
and before finding a final home at the National Motorcycle Museum in England.

Watch the short video: Some good historical footage as well as dialog.  Thanks again Brother Lou for putting together another lil bit of LSR History to preserve and share.

It is brilliant, so thanks for getting it to us! Denis is a complete legend and an example for all to follow.

A little piece of history that many may not know, Al Teague used the molds from the Norton liner & stretched them to make the body for "Betsy" Spirit of 76 originally built as a lakester & evolved into the streamliner we finally retired a few years ago.
Anyone got some pics for comparison?

Robin took the picture at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Goodwood, England when Lord March allowed his cricket pitch to be turned into the salt flats.

Left to right: MG EX 181 a 1489cc & 1506cc Supercharged streamliner driven by Stirling Moss 245.64 mph in 1957 and and Phil Hill 254.91 mph in 1959.  Al Teague Spirit of '76 - 409 mph, So-Cal belly tank lakester, Challenger (406 mph one way), Redhead streamliner, and Blue Flame.  Not in this photo but also on the 'salt' were JCB Diesel Max, two other MGs (the ex works MGF and the So-Cal Station Wagon), Flatfire and Nebulous Theorem.  May have forgotten someone working from memory, but all have been to the salt.

Denis and the Norton streamliner show how hard it is to take something to the salt that is very capable of breaking the record and never make that goal.

A lotta years and dollars later to make that happen.
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.

Go here for the history, and pics of 'Betsy' as a lakester:

With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine. However, this is not necessarily a good idea. It is hard to be sure where they are going to land, and it could be dangerous sitting under them as they fly overhead. -- RFC 1925

You can't make a race horse out of a pig. But if you work hard enough at it you can make a mighty fast pig. - Bob Akin
