The cost soon fades from memory once a mile stone record is achieved.

Two old timer MC racers have experienced this.

But their wives never forget the cost and they have to dust the trophies.

A double pisss off.

FREUD

Thats prob why dad got rid of all of his trophies!

Sum, where you at?!

This coversation reminds me of Mike Dunn's comment when ask on a TV broadcast; dosen't racing cost much more today than it did when your dad raced? Dixon came back real quick "no it costs the same, it took all of your money then and it takes all of your money now".
I am happy to hear that Sum is well and will get back to landspeed racing one of these days. Maybe some day when there is no wind and the boat won't go?

Well, I hate to admit I may be the closest "salt deflicted" person to Sumner and have never met him.  Google says 125 miles . . . and there is a great museum there I need to visit again.  Two, actually.

So, If/when i get in the neighborhood I'll see if I can shake him out of his boat shop.

You never ever let them know how much you are spending. Last year my wife wanted a pool and deck. We got them and she said we are even. :roll:The pool and deck were about half of what I had spent on the bike.

Sum is talking of a sbc in the lakester now?  He will need to rebuild the back end a good deal to get the sbc  in there.  Last I read he was going to Florida for the winter for that boat thing

Boat-- A hole in the water you pour money into.

Race-- A deeper hole.  :-D :-D

After finaly making it to Speedweek this year with my car I was lookiing forward to meeting Sumner Patterson. His web site was a great deal of help to me building my car and he was a regular contributer to this forum. When I could not find his flamed pick up or Hooleys Studebaker I stopped looking.  Are you out there Sumner? Hope that you are well and will be able to finish your lakester if you haven't already.

Bruce Harmon

Bruce, Sum wasn't at 2011 Speed Week, we didn't take the Studebaker out either. I did crew with the 898 Stude pick-up.
Sailing is still on for him and Ruth.

Miss it,
Hooley

Hooley, it was great to meet you at Speedweek.  I apologize for not spending more time with you but between trying to find and installing a motor in the tow vehicle, and trying to figure out how to mount a push bar on a ATV, I was a little worse for wear.
I sort of  won the fast Stude (Courtney Hizer) award by default and I hope next year I have to try and beat you to win it.....................   Bob

Thanks Bob,
I wanted to set and visit with you but as you said your pit was full.  I worried about you getting the truck fixed.  With the true spirit of it, you pulled it off.
We'll have to do some more visiting this next year.

We are in Blanding  with Sum and Ruth---we whacked the back end off a couple of TIP tanks that Sum has---one will become nosecone extension and maybe the other will become the rear bottom---picts to follow when we return to Phoenix and I can look up the plate info---they have some sort of diffuser that I may use on the rear

oh by the way we actually worked on his Lakester for a while

Sparky........what a great report. It adds to Thanksgiving just knowing that Sum touched his lakester project.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you.

I also saw his name the other night on the forum in the "Who's Online" area.

I had to look twice!
