2012 - wheel-driven machines with 400 mph potential
« on: October 20, 2011, 08:20:13 AM »
After reading about the Thompson streamliner, I got to thinking about the possibilities for 2012 - Speed Demon, Spectre, Rett, Nish, Maro, Herbert-Evernham, Turbinator?, Burkland?, Target 550?, etc....
Could be really historic if everything falls into place..

What is the thinking on potential wheel-driven top speeds?

"Patience be damned. I wanta kill something."

A quote something like that exists somewhere besides in this post.

Target500 is reached another stage.  There are now pieces coming OFF of it in preparation for sandblasting

and painting the frame. There are still pieces being fabricated but items that are not needed are being removed.

Dummy items needed for fitting will be replaced by the real thing when it goes back together.

When the frame is stripped all of the welds that are just tacks will be finished and the pressure test will be

done to test the integrity of the structure.

That feels good. When it goes outdoors to be sandblasted there will have to be a shelter build to blast it and

when it goes inside to be painted it will have to be tented.

At least it's at the stage where those things are being discussed but not this week. The crew is in Bakersfield

for the dig races.  Go find them and get your questions answered.

That is quite a list. You are missing a few ?, I will let you figure it out.

Speed potential? I must admit that I was forced to up my bar a bit this year with the Speed Demon performance marks of 457/462. I took a chance at 450 tops, the Cook track lost 2.5 miles on the freeway end and 1.5 on the mountain end. Take that out of a 12 mile track and you are left with - not much length for real big numbers.

When throwing out big numbers you have to take the track into considertion.

The potential of all will be reached for and raised by those trying now and those to come in the future until the $$ and their dream runs out......

Until then I will watch with high expectations and envy of those who are willing to forge ahead to a speed we have not reached yet............. :-D

PS: When we all become "equal" in the eyes of our leaders it will all be a memory.

My restaurant napkin doodle of the week is an "electro-motive" liner, maybe a surplus APU for power to an electric motor and drive wheels like on a bullet train.  Heavy, fast(?), needing rubber tires.  Maybe one of the big locomotive makers has a surplus bullet train prototype rusting in back of the fab shop.  I'll never do it myself.

Four drive wheels, two way in the front to steer.

From last year:

"After reading about the Thompson streamliner, I got to thinking about the possibilities for 2012 - Speed Demon, Spectre, Rett, Nish, Maro, Herbert-Evernham, Turbinator?, Burkland?, Target 550?, etc....
Could be really historic if everything falls into place"

Who do you know/think will be out in 2012 at one of the three events?

Can't make SW this year but plan to attend WOS for the first time.

Thanks,

Woz

Not likely to happen this year. Looks like the Speed Demon and the Maro are the only ones running SW. Nish might make the WOS or the Cook shoot out, The Turbinator is not ready at all.Probably next year for the Target550 car. However it will be on display at SW.

Not a lot of progress on the Doug Herbert liner. I think funding is a big part of it.
