Was the tail cut to fim spec or left long and run for time only
At least he was able to get back into it a little, maybe wind at the 3.5?

I would like to complement the designers of the Speed Demon car, to be able to switch between several motors in such a short time means that a lot of thinking went into the car design to make it possible to do the engine changes in such a timely manner.

The next thing is the crew, they are what I call "Racing Dogs"!!! Which is a real complement. They do what ever it takes to make it happen. George and Ron get all of the press the crew gets the satisfaction of knowing "their" car is the fastest engine driven car in the world!!!

Jim, I don't know about the particulars of the tail -- whether they were running only for testing or maybe a record.  I do know that they had put a couple of cameras on the bike, with one showing front suspension activity and the other inside the swingarm to watch tire growth.  They've switched from the Eagle, that grew more than an inch and a half and shaved itself to the cords on the inside of the 'arm, back to a regular race tire.  They want data on the growth.

Speed Demon is moving down the course to the far end.  It'll likely be a half-hour or so 'til they're ready to run.


Tower has calculated Al Lamb's record averages (pending certification, as you well know):

Kilo average 245.447,  mile average 245.361.  That's that for now.

The tail on Assen's bike was trimmed last nite...and (according to one source) cut again this morning to comply with FIM or AMA regs...I don't know which.  Photos attached, both stationary and as he passed thru the entry of the timed mile.

George Poteet is in his firesuit with the car at the Floating Island end of the course - and ready to get in the 715 car.  Expect maybe 5 - 10 minutes for a run down toward us at the freeway end of the course.

Getting ready to lockdown the course.  All is secure.

Danny Burrows, in the support truck, is reporting that "Flight 715" is ready to make a 400 mph flight.  Champagne will be servecd by the stewardesses.

Engine is running, on the push truck, moving out.

Here comes George !!

Speed Demon is on the course with the 182 ci 4-cylinder engine in the car.  Engine off, shut down the run, so much for the champagne, slowing at the ten mile.

Car continuing to move, slowly, to the support truck, at about the 9 mile.  No word yet on why he shut off.  No big problems reported - no smoke.  More as I get it.

Poteet and main will put the car on the trailer -- sounds like they'll bring it back here to the pit.

I don't know the official price tag, but I've heard the $10k number bandied about.  Let's see -- fire and ambulance cost $450/hour while they're on the clock out here - and, mmm, if they've been here 8 hours/day for five days -- unh, you add it up and you'll see why it costs so much to run at a tiny meet.

20 yrs ago it cost 10K just to get FIA on site, I was thinking 10K per would be a min #.

A coupla P&M team members were discussing a drivetrain failure.  Sounds like a familiar tune.  The question was, "Do we have any more driveshafts?"  The answer was, "We only had one [for the 4-cylinder.]"
