Bob, Andy stopped by this laptop just as your post came across.  He explains that they're running the two-up bike as an attempt to quantify the style - and build some base support for creating a class for two-up riding in any of the major sanctioning organisations.  He went on to explain that both he and Erin have ridden and raced at high speeds for a long time, and have done extensive high-speed two-up riding and racing (yes, both for fun and for publicity) for years.

I'll let him continue his "defense" of the two-up riding on his own -- but since he was here I asked and got his response.

As for Rocky last night, Mr. Drury, the Ack team had asked - before the safety crews left - to make the low speed runs.  All knew that fire and ambulance were not on duty.  I don't know the whys and wherefores of the choice to make test runs without safety, but it was done with the knowledge of no safety crews.

I know this post will get a few replies........but this 2-up BMW circus act is stupid, not only that.. but it is downright dangerous.  I am really surprised that that Mike C. allowed it.....I can only think it must involve cubic dollars......They are racing in no known national or international class, just doing it for kicks and maybe BMW advertising...

I'm not sure how it is any different than strapping skiers to the top of your car or pulling a bicycle up to speed with a racecar. Which have both been done at sanctioned events.
Records or parts, I didn't come all this way not to break something.

Now that's funny.

I called Jason/Richard and told them to look at the pic of their bike.

Nearburg is getting ready to get into the car.  I'll be out of the pickup for a few minutes -- gotta go secure the pits.  Back soon.

hey Ray or whoever...could you let Richard see that last posted pick at
speed...it was mentioned that they may be adding more ballast to the rear for
upcoming runs...

I'll show him the photo when I get back to the pits.  I'm currently at the timing stand.

Course is clear, starting the engine in the Spirit of Rett #1122.  He'll run from the mountain end to the pits.  Course is secure.

Nearburg car is running, canopy is down, car is under way.

On the course at the 2 mile, accelerating.  At the three, nice roar in the background, through the four.

368.7 entry  370 kilo, mile 378.3, chute out

As to the Dr's post... no reply....I consider the source....................................................................
A 2-up motorcycle class!!!!!.....Hey, maybe a new AMA/FIM class, and I would think SCTA/BNI would be very interested in this class to help promote Land Speed Racing as a "super extreme sport"..................
Question authority.....always

Report that the engine "sounded like it was chewing itself up", but the car is now on course and slowing and the engine is idling.  Fire and ambulance are next to the car and it looks good, they report.

Entry 368.7   370.2 kilo  370.3 mile    372 exit.

The speed will qualify him for a return run -- but no word yet if they'll try it.  I'll stay in touch.

The car's transporter just returned to the pits, perhaps 'cause they won't make a return run, perhaps 'cause they need it to put the car in position for a return.  More soon.

Why stop at two?

Running without fire and ambulance isn't worth it, is it? It's a long wait to get somebody out there.

80 mph doesn't sound fast compared to the speed it is capable of.

An 80 mph roll is an extremely dynamic event. The pictures bear that out. Looks like Rocky got a face full of salt.
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.

What is the issue with Richard A's bike and ballast? I can see the rear of the body pan  is close (or on) the salt. But if he adds more ballast to the swingarm, that would not change, right? On the other hand, if he added it to the frame, it would lower the body more and definitely drag.

PS - Thanks for the reporting and pics Jon and Ray!
