Thank you Jon, Ray and everyone else for your great reporting from the salt. The live audio is fantastic, I cannot wait to tune in tomorrow   I hope you all know how much you are appreciated by us poor saps that cannot be there in person. Jon, I wish it could be more but my donation to the site will be sent tonight.

Vesco: wheel-driven single turbine engine
Burkland: wheel-driven multiple piston engines
Poteet: wheel-driven single piston engine

That's the official Amo reference sheet.

If I remember correctly, they don't use an exit trap at the FIA meet. Am I correct or senile?

According to the Ugo Fadini LSR Models page on Tom Burkland, at the 2000 World of Speed Tom went 405.282 in the 4th mile, 438.815 in the 5th mile and terminal speed 450.225.

George Poteet has the fastest piston engine mile speed with 442.854. Was there an exit speed?

Don Vesco ran 459.921 in the mile with the turbine powered Turbinator.

Ron? George? Is it possible?

Poteet was reported at have a 446.000 exit speed. So with that in mind then Burkland will still have the fastest speed recorded for piston engine at 450.225 mph, Poteet and crew will have the fastest piston engine mile speed at 442.854 mph.

The fastest wheel driven mph will still stand with Vesco  Turbinator at 459.021 mile speed, and exit was 470.298 mph.

All makes sense right?

Doesn't matter if you are right or wrong - your still senile.
The Rice Brothers have a trap speed setup, they have in the past. And your still senile.

....and...the Demon's motor is 347, not 447.

I was wrong about the cause of the Demon's aborted run.  The Ack Attack's motor was running so I didn't hear George searching for a gear and only finding a box gull of neutrals.  Seems that according to their data logger, there were 2 spikes in the wheel speed...one when he crossed the aquifer and again when he apparently hit a hole in the salt.  The 2nd spike was followed by the driveshaft/pinion yoke breaking.  Seems somehow strangely familiar.  I know of a certain Monte Carlo that did the same thing.

The reason for the "minor adjustment" with the crowbar shown in an earlier photo was the transmission's rear seal sliding out of place and the crowbar was used to stuff it back in.

I hope it's not like last year where Speed Demon had big boom speeds on Monday, and the rest of the week just big booms.

Hey, and a shout out to Spirit of Rett with a 386.
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.

The FIA visitors were out at the tower hoping to see a 400 mph run before they fly out tomorrow.  Speed Demon did not disappoint them.
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.

Howard Nafzger who built the liner now known as the 'Spirit of Rhett" was on the salt today for the first time in eight years.  He was thrilled to be back although he is walking with a walker and still has a bandage on the knee that was replaced not long ago.  He has  had a tough couple of years losing his wife and son.  I hope this is a happy return for him and hope the liner does well for him to see.

The FIA and FIM folks reminded me of the Olympic officials who were in SLC before the 2002 bids.  Remember the stories?

Earl Wooten proved that Howard designed and built one hell of a car.  It's just a Dodge shame that Howard wasn't able to run the car himself, but he still deserves a feather in his hat (if not a entire headdress of Eagle feathers...........).

John, I didn't see any of the story posted -- but you may be right.  For those of you that haven't heard, here's the story about the Ack Attack bike a few hours ago - after the meet ended for the day.

The Ack team took the bike out, without any body panels, for some low-speed (50-100 mph) testing, including the traction control system.  The motors were running for the tests.  We had left -- so I heard this from Mike Cook, didn't see it myself.

The bike was running and the traction control stuttered (best way Cook described it) and then the rear (drive) wheel went up to speed.  The hit, he reports, was similar to the hit when a 2-stroke motor comes on the pipe -- chug-chug-chug- kablamm!!  The rear wheel spun and kicked the bike sideways -- and the bike then pencil rolled about a dozen times.

Rocky wasn't seriously hurt - in fact, he called Tricia and talked with her, and she went out to the salt to meet with him and the rest of the crew, and then Rocky and Tricia rode in an ambulance to a hospital in SLC for observation of Rocky.  He's not seriously injured -- but hurts here and there and every danged place.  They'll check him over, under, around and through.

The bike may or may not be repairable in time to run again at this meet.  As I mentioned, the body panels weren't on it, so while they're okay -- the exposed parts may have been damaged or scrubbed into the surface of the track.  We won't know about it 'til morning - at the earliest.  For that matter -- we won't know Rocky's condition 'til then, either.

End of story for now.  I don't have further details yet -- will fill you in tomorrow.
