One of Jack Roger's Camaros is a work in progress which might be finished in time to run at this meet....or not.  But they're working on it.  Jack's gonna run the Carrera Panamericana this year instead of competing at the Shootout.

Now that I'm back at the motel, I can post some of the photos I shot earlier.  Using my Android phone to tether my laptop to the web is functional...sometimes, but it's a royal PITA. 

Anyway, here are a few from Impound earlier in the day.

The Charles Reno Modified Roadster,

Those Salt Cats are back again after making a 216 run with a real hot motor,

Sam Dakin's turbo Sportster sidecar that made it to impound after replacing the rusted-solid steering-head bearing...

...and the bearing itself.  Sam described it as, "after we cleaned it up a lot."  Sheesh!

Nancy did get in one run -- after 4 1/2 hours in line.  192 quarter, 195 first mile, 199.7 middle mile, 199.8 last mile, 199.9 back door.  Dang, what's going on?  Is there a speed limiter in the thing?  So -- nothing to do but change gear and try again in the morning.  This was her best - most aggressive - leave yet, and while we thought she'd have time for the bike to pull itself faster -- well, I used some JB Weld to put an extra tooth* on one gear, and filed one off the other sprocket.  Or something -- won't tell you what I really did 'til it proves that I made it way better - or way worse.  But gotta try something. . .

*I put the tooth on the side of the gear -- the perimeter was really full of 'em already.

Other than that -- they were still running when we left the salt at about 6.30.  I thought they closed the pits to everyone at 6 and closed the salt at 6.30 -- but -- nope, still running.  I saw the Knecum/DeLuca trailer in impound as we drove out, and Sam Dakin's bike back in there, and of course the Hammond car, and there was traffic then and I couldn't see who else was in there.  More later - but going to supper with Scott Guthrie now.

The last batch of the evening.

First is Chris Lindh whose help with a carburetor and fuel delivery system made it possible for me to be on the salt.  When I broke my car, Jim Halladay, aka Texican gave Chris a ride in his truck.

At Jim's prompting, he's posing with his helmet cradled in his arm....

...and then he launched and got the best speed that truck's seen: 112.8. 

...and a Suzuki (I guess it's a Kizashi...I don't think I can say that name out loud without adding, "Gesundheit!"); I didn't hear how fast it ran...

...I was too busy being amazed at the Karmann Ghia that ran 136 or thereabouts.  I asked Carlos if it was  blown and he said, no, naturally aspirated."  My jaw musta dropped big time cuz he and Steve (the other staging lane dude on the 130 course) got a good laugh at my reaction....then said, "yeah.  That's what we did when we heard what he ran the first time!"

T2011 increased their speed by a little more than 10% over yesterday to 29.83870 mph !   And then we did something really bold...we read the engine manual section about fuel and governor control, yup = some adjustments and behind the pit driving; we figure we now are giving it the fuel it needs and not the "black smoke" more.  Going for an early morning "thick HP/Speed air" run.....

the bigger event today was the visiting 6th grade Morningside Elementary class from Salt Lake City - all of a sudden there was a flurry of activity in and near our pit area - lots of learning and exploring resulting in a great group photo.

The reception and connections made here have been just wonderful - thank you all.....

Oops.  I dunno where the sidecar idea came from.  But I don't like the sound of turbo bearings getting eaten.  Seems like far too many sacrifices are being made to the gods of speed. 

Be safe and go fast.  I'll be there with the camera...if those gods are willing.

I just fired up the 'puter - and the weather forecast looks crappy. with 70% chance of showers, it's windy as the dickens right now, and the radar image is not very promising.  Anybody out on the salt yet?  We're still in the motel - wondering how to dress. . .  We'll head out there in a while - but boyoboy, this doesn't look good for now.  Tomorrow and from then on it's fine, but sheesh, today. . .
