WoS '09 is still making it's mark.
Silly me; never did a 100% teardown.

Found a rusted solid neck bearing in Impound this evening.
A minor (SOP) thrash was performed.

I expect much better handling tomorrow..

Great coverage of the Granite Falls project. We ALL need to encourage efforts like it IMHOP.

RTR, my condolences. There are two OUTSTANDING driveshaft fabricators in yrs truly's area.

Inland empire Driveline in Guasti, Ca. and Ed Moore Drivelines in San Bernardino, Ca. Both understand racers needs.

Moore, incidently is the former driver ot the "MOB" fuel altered and ,in his engine building days, built the motor for '55 Chevy that paced the local San Berdoo Doctor on his bicycle, to, at that time, the fastest ever human vehicle speed.
The good Doctor ran to the Salt Flats from Wendover each race day, by the way.

Any other you/us dudes ever did that? Or wanna try?

It was the driveshaft which went to h*ll when the pinion yoke snapped.  It beat itself into a pretzel shape, punched some holes in the floor pan and destroyed the exhaust.

I'm reasonably confident that although I've driven cars with non-serviceable drive shafts and exhausts that could have been more securely attached ,I've never been there. Good effort Ray.

Best of luck to everyone on the salt.
Few understand what I'm trying to do but they vastly outnumber those who understand why...................

We have someting in common...we have both shucked a driveshaft at bonneville!
Nothing that a trip to salt Lake City and $120 wont fix!

The driveshaft was from Denny's, They advertise it as being break and twist-proof.

I wonder if they'll cover it under warranty.

Sorta like the 4400 pound trailer ramps I bought that sagged and twisted.  I'm gonna take those back to the seller and politely ask for a refund...or the phone number of their defense attorney.  :)

Oh, Ray - that hurts.

It's all a grand experiment, chief.

If it were me, I'd mount that driveshaft over the mantle.

Bystander..... I have run from the old Best Western Motel to Lands End and back before sunrise. I only did it one time but I have done it.

I put water cans on the bridge that goes over the freeway and drank going both ways. I ran thru the potash plant and stayed away from

the freeway.

It ain't again in my life.  But I have done it.

Bystander -

Running - no.  Bicycling - well . . .

I shipped my bicycle out to Wendover last month with every intent of bicycling back and forth from the KOA camp to the salt.  Good exercise, but the ungroomed salt proved to be an eye opener when I realized that the front wheel was sliding out from under me.

It looks easy - pretty flat and all, once you're out of West Wendover - but the frontage road and the road to Land's End is longer than one remembers in a car.  And once you're done chatting with Lynda, you're still 15 minutes to the pits.

Then some foreign press correspondents took pity on me and offered to haul my dried up old carcass around in a very sweet Mustang GT.  Thanks, Simon, Doc.

I like staying fit, but I ain't stupid.

At work this week I have had to actually work - no chance to listen to the broadcasts.  It there a place where they can be listened to after hours?

Ray, sorry to hear about the drive line.  Look at the good side, you have a big reason to come back next year.

Congrats to the "Salt Cat" Gang and Doug Grieve...I didn't mean to throw a monkey wrench into the mix..I was at work and read what Glen said and after I looked at the USFRA website and I only had the SCTA-BNI and 200 MPH Club website to look at for whose record they broke..

I'm glad when ANY vintage engine vehicle, car or bike, make it into the 2 Club.

Atta boy to Dick Knorr for getting his Opel GT with 4200 GM 6 over 200...He only needs a couple of more mph to qualify.........JD

Drat Ray that is no fun.. sorry to hear you are done for this year.

I hate it when the drive line tries to come up and join you inside the car, and they are real noisy when they are knocking on the floor pan and other assorted parts down there.

Killed several driveshafts/u joints with my 392 hemi until I sorted out the U joint angles under load.
You might want to check what your joint angles where when the rear diff nose comes up under acceleration and shifts.
That is what I always munched the rear you joint, until I put tapered shims in the rear springs to get the U-joint angles down to reasonable numbers and a pinion snubber so the pinion did not climb the ring gear far enough to break the U-joint.

Also make sure the drive shaft was the right length if the length is a little too long and the suspension squat stacks the splines solid it will also blow the U-joint. Not sure how much differential movement you have on your rear suspension though but worth verifying when you get the replacement built.

Put a big load of stuff in the trunk to squat the rear end and check your free play on the splines and angles.

Congratulations to the Granite Falls HS Urban Concept car team!!

It would be interesting to create a high school car class to get some other student auto shop groups out there on the salt flats each year.  Perhaps a challenge with a small rotax engine or some "standard" power plant that was affordable and easy to work with.
