I've heard horror stories of mustangs and datsuns that have had the louvers ripped from their fast back, at speed. Is there someone who could fill me in on what effects the sports slats or back lights, or fast back louvers have on cars at high speed? I would think that they would cause a vacuum, but would they straighten out the flo better if the vehicle has a concave window to start with? The wind tunnel tests that ford did on my torino stated that they had 456 pounds of lift at 214, because of the rear window without slats.

The slats help induce separation (read: drag). With less attached air flow over the back of a hatchback style body, there is less lift. That drag is energy and at high enough speed it can rip the lovers off either by simple stress or stress distorting the mounts enough to locally fail them one at a time.
In LSR it is better to reduce lift with less drag so the common solution is to run a slick fastback with a spoiler. Raising the spoiler angle causes negative camber, negative effective rake, and less separation than the louvers.

Steve, what year is your Torino ?
I have a 1970 Cobra Jet,,, 429SCJ with C6 and Drag Pack equiped... Yellow with Black Hood (yes the Shaker Scoop too) Black Interior.... Seems complete just missing the original center console and shifter,, has B&M floor shifter.
Are these cars worth anything ?

Well Charles, I hope they are worth a butt-load. Shaker hood, drag pack, 4 speed and the dang not-so-manly Calypso Coral (orange) paint! No slats and don't imagine it would help. Traded out the 3.91 gears for 2.5.

I think Steve said his is a 71, he bought it new when he came out of the military. It's a 429 4 spd, pretty cool car. It would be interesting to see how my 70 R/T Coronet would shape up against it, before he got a swillion dollars in the engine.

it will tell you anything you want to know about Torino Cobra's. 71's had less production, but a lot of them ended their lives early in the side of buildings. I have been called an idiot for turning mine into a LSR, but that is what I wanted to do with it. The aero's are not good, but the 429 is a short stroke that loves the top end. Put a custom tremic 6 speed into her and it really makes a good drive train. Now if I could only afford the horse power to pull 6th gear.
