Gas Coupe Questions
«
on:
May 13, 2008, 11:05:53 PM »
I am in the process of starting a build-up of a Gas Coupe. The rules say that certain items must be in the stock location and of the same year as the body.
My questions:(probably the first of many)
Can I put a new subframe on the front?
Can the car be lowered?
Thanks
Will

I believe I would contact the rules committee on this one. Page 65 specifically states: same year as the body, "frame"
In a unibody like a Camaro that's pretty specific. I could see adding an aftermarket front suspension (Fatman, Jim Meyer etc)to a a 1940 Ford but if you cut the frame off at the firewall and grafted on a 1967 Camaro subframe you might be in a gray area. If you cut up the back half and added tubs etc you would have only a small section of the original frame remaining. As an opinion for lowering if you did one of the "notches" for the rear to be lower I too would see that a not original and not allowed.
I would only consider a complete frame as meeting the rules. I feel boxing or stiffining OK but the entire original frame as in rails must still be there...This is only an opinion. I would contact the coupe and sedan committe listed in the rule book.......Good luck

As time goes on yrs truly can see that definitions are going to be strained as to original, reproduction, and what one can do and still fullfill the "spirit" of the rules. Example- the FANTASTIC '55-57 era Chevy frames that Art morrison produces- they fit, they're not stock, but they may be a SAFER platform to build on - at least for that model!
Hard to keep up with the future!

Cajun-
I have a 1953 Studebaker, and plan to run an inline engine so it won't fit in the Classic category.

Tom Finns GMC powered Vega gas coup had a very nice tube frame fowared of the firewall. I never really looked at the Monza but I suspect it is pretty much the same. I guess you should ask Bobby Sykes.

I have contacted Bobby and my understanding is that the frame must be original, but I think modifications, such as Mustang or other suspensions, are allowed.
Refer up to J.D.'s post above.
