Not running @ Bonneville
« on: September 30, 2007, 01:27:49 PM »
We still have water in our oil.  Cannot figure out where the water is coming, and it looks like the water is getting to the crank.  The car is not going but we are. We will be there Monday evening.  See ya tues. at tech.  Looking forward to meeting many of you.  Good luck to all.

yeah it sucks, but it would suck even more if we blew up a brand new system.

Man that sucks!!  I feel like me and you have been in the same boat with trying to get out and make some runs. Hopefully everything will work out for you to make ELMO.

What engine are you running ? Could be a pin hole/ porous casting in the timing cover.

Could be many things, I hope it's not the casting.  We would have to wait a long time to get another block.  As far as Elmo is concerned we don't know yet.  We will probably have to take the engine apart to locate the leak, if so we might not have enough time.

Wish you the best of luck. Saw your other post with a few photos of the car. The inter-cooler is really doing a good job even without ice. Keep us posted and have a good trip even if it's only spectating.

Wow, I feel sorry for you guys .  You have put so much work into that car.  I was really looking forward to seeing it, but at least I'll get to meet you guys  :-) ,

It is disappointing but this stuff happens and you just have to roll with it.  "that's racing"  At least we will be able to see, hear, and smell the races at the WFs.  See ya there.

Sorry to hear about your water "in the oil problems" and not making WF. You probably will get many suggestions where that water was coming from and I want to tell you where mine was coming from when I first fired off a SBC rebuild a few years ago.

First fire up: run engine at 2000 rpm-slight knock at valve train speed. Shut down and pull rocker arm covers. Water in oil in the top of heads. Pressurize water system to 18# and see leaks around head studs/nuts. I had ignored the instructions to use Locktite and had used teflon pipe sealer when installing the studs in the block! I drained the water and oil ( there was water in the oil ). I removed the studs one at a time, put groves in an old head bolt to clean the threads in the block. Reinstalled the studs with red Locktite. Changed the oil filter. Ran the engine and found no more water leaks around the head studs.

The knock was still there. Turned out it was a loose header pipe in the slip joint collector! A round track racing friend found it in about 30 seconds after I had looked for days.

Chances are your problems are some thing different but I had to tell you about my mistake. I've been around a long time and have made many.

Hope your problem is even simpler.

John and Troy, sorry you ran into engine problems, but like you said and I have said too many times, "that's racing". Come and visit me on the front row of the pits just past and across from the Coddington Circus, red Stude #787. Cya
