BMW - LSR Commercial
« on: March 31, 2007, 03:28:22 AM »
Here is a link I found on YouTube showing a BMW Commercial featuring an LSR streamliner. Looks like it's at El Mirage.

The FCC in the US requires that any claims as to the performance of a motor vehicle be independently verified before it can be allowed to be aired.
Look close the next time you see a commercial about any performance aspect or comparison and at the bottom in fine print for a 1/4 second is the information.
It is likely the impression that you are left with as to the speed of the BMW as compared to the racer got them into a bind.
They could fix it with a disclaimer but perhaps chose not to.

Right on, JACK.
The impression was that the BMW could go as fast as the 'liner and it didn't
happen unless the 'liner was sandbagging.
The camera mans signal verified that it was all OK.

Anyone notice the jet engine noise in the ad? How it winds up as the liner is going and winds down as it stops. Mmmmmmmmmm.

I move that all Beemers be banned from any speed event in the future. Don't let them through the gate.  If they all go that fast, then nobody stands a chance at a record.
BTW... That liners chute sure didn't stay open for very long... must have been one heck of a tailwind that day.

Have a great weekend all.........          Smitty

Yes... the jet engine sounds! I stand outside the office door and make sounds like that so the office crew will think we are really busy doing something in the shop. It keeps them from bugging us while we finish our donuts, and coffee.

BELIEVE IT OR ELSE

Don't get too wet about the jet noise.
It was a shop vac back at the studio.
The first edit had a galloping horse but it was rejected in house.
I guess the sound guy got cold feet when he had his shoes off. LOL

Actually, I think getting ahold of a BMW somewhere and mounting a camera on it to do close-up studies of LSR cars might be a great idea! It would certainly further the studies of aerodynamics and such.

Does anybody's uncle or brother-in-law own one of these that we could borrow?

A couple of car companies did ads in Europe straight after the ThrustSSC project. One was a TV ad that used Al Teague's car and featured a guy picking up the chute after a run. Looked quite similar to the BMW ad come to think of it. The other was a two page colour ad by Audi in a load of mags showing the Black Rock desert with an Audi at the bottom left of the first page. The tag line was - Thrust from Audi, the sound will be along in a minute. Richard Noble complained for ripping of the Thrust name and the ad was banned but not for that reason. Like the other ad and the BMW effort, linking speed to road car sales is a big no no. Presumably like Honda with their cynical Save The Planet F1 livery, the big manufacturers pour money into motor sport knowing that it isn't in any way linked to attempts to increase road car sales. Yeah right. All pigs fuelled and ready for take off!!

Whatever, it was a great ad, especially for LSR folks. Hope it can run some place. We all should realize that ads are all BS anyway.
