Squaring off tries for more contact patch
« on: January 31, 2021, 09:10:43 AM »
This is a naturally occurring phenomenon for sport bike riders and cruisers for various reasons(lots of straight highway miles, burnouts, whatever)

Is this done intentionally on some Salt Flats tires?

I don't know but I doubt it.  I've had many tires prepared for our bikes - by Nate Jones.  He shaves them (removes some of the rubber) for running at the salt, and the resulting tire is similar to original shape, not squared off.

FWIW, I went to the source.  I just spoke with Nate Jones Jr.  He was very pleasant and helpful.  I asked him the question and he said that is exactly what they often do with motorcycle tires.  They try to widen the functional contact patch when shaving the rounded profile tires by flattening the center section to a degree.
