One disadvantage I can think of having the fuel tank up front is that in a fire your fuel tank is a torch with the flames going back toward you. Otherwise it sounds like a good idea.

With a small engine and short course only I ran a 3 gal cell in the front of my Firebird. Worked well, avoiding all the issues of tanks in the drivers compartment, fuel lines in the region of the fly wheel etc etc. If you have space for it, I think is a good idea and as noted you can then use the rear tank for ballast as needed.

Yep, but any fuel problem is the same thing... feeding a fire till you turn off the pump... and turn on the fire suppression.  I think your small tank in the front idea is the best solution to your dilemma.
