I'm coming out for the Shootout
« on: March 14, 2010, 04:12:55 PM »
I'm kind of wondering about driving out or taking AMTRAK to SLC and renting a car.  Driving is a two day trip, which is no big deal, but taking the train takes me through the Rockies and a lot of photo ops and is a lot cheaper.  The problem with the train is that it gets into SLC at about 11pm.  What are the chances of getting a car at that time of night?

Might be a shuttle bus out to the SLC airport, lots of rental cars there 24/7.

Amtrak gets in to the intermodal hub between 11:00 P.M. and 2:00 A.M. depending on delays. There is no shuttle service to anywhere from there but there are cabs hanging around usually. You might try calling the rental car places to see if they can deliver a car to you at the hub or picking you up and taking you to their facility. If Amtrak is not rerouted through Wyoming the scenery in some spots is spectacular. It just goes by very fast.

TZoom;

As a Salt Lake Bus Operator for UTA(Utah Transit Authority)or as Wes call us,(Unknown Time of Arrival) our last Weekday bus leaves the Intermodal Hub at 10:45P,arrives at SLC Airport at 11:05P. However this time may change come April 4.
The Hub is not the best neighborhood late at nite, but as mentioned, cabbies usually hang out in front all nite. A trip to Airport will run about $25. As you know, if you spend the nite at a Large Downtown Hotel, they'll pick you up at Hub, deliver you to your Hotel, then take you to airport or wherever the next morning.
Enterprise has a rental desk at Best Western Downtown SLC. 122W S. Temple 801-539-7752.
Just do like Dan Warner, don't tell them your taking the car to the salt, but that your going to visit your sister in Ogden! LOL
Good Luck, hope to cya on the salt!

You might look into taking Amtrak into Wendover.  Rent a car there.    Rich

There are no rental cars in Wendover.Either Salt Lake or Ely Nv. Don't tell them where you are going. Be sure to do a good clean up before you try to return them. Most new stuff has a build in GPS so they can track.

Amtrak goes through Wendover -- but I don't think it stops there.  Wear lots of padding if you try a moving bail-out from the train.
