My occasional suggestion is to look into
www.uship.com. The site is sort of an eBay for shipping, where shippers (you) list the load particulars - when, where from and to, approx weight, description of stuff - - and where haulers look for loads going to places they are heading for. I had a bike shipped from Virginia to Salt Lake City, for instance, and it stopped in Houston and Denver and another place on the way -- but I got the entire shipment delivered for about $350. You'd likely get multiple bids, and that allows you to shop. You specify the time and date -- some of the bidders will want to tie you into a certain date - but you're welcome to say "No -- my date or not at all with you, dork!"
There are other shippers like Uship.com, I think.
