I'm starting to get excited.
as BUB '11 draws near :-)
Nothing beats Racing Bikes on the Salt :-o
Lets all give a cheer
-
:-)
Me too! If the bike was done I'd really be amped but it isn't. But I will be there ready to work and then ride a bit when things cool down.
Are you going to ride this year?
Bob
-
About 5 weeks to go and my electrical is not even done yet!!! :-o
Long nights ahead.
-
We have three bikes going into a container this week, heading half way around the world just to run at BUB,,,,,, YEEHARRR
-
I'll look for you in PreStage.
Bob
-
It looks like more internation bikes and riders will appear this year............along with several rookies.........including me! I'm still trying to lose a few more pounds to fit into my borrowed leathers!
-
Scrambler..do you have a number? class?
Bob
-
I'm ready... woot wooot
-
MC...........I have not pre-reigistered. I intend to run in the MPG-250cc class with a modified Triumph Cub. I have a few pics in the build diary page. Our first attempt at this will be to have FUN and maybe, just maybe we will pass inspection and get a few RWYB runs in to test our vintage thoughts........If all goes well I am thinking I could register for a record run while on the salt.........If I read the rules and records correctly, our goal is to surpass 80 mph........or to have fun by going fast, slowly!
I visited BUB as a spectator in 2009 and have a dual-sport pit bike that goes faster........maybe I should register it and start a new class?
-
Scrambler, you will have fun..you will learn an old saw...you must master slow to go fast.
Look me up in PRE STAGE, the oldest guy there named Bob.
I plan to run the last couple of days when things slow down. If we get the bike running, i leave on the 22nd and the bike is still in pieces in Va.
Will look up your build maybe i can learn something.
Have fun, go fast and be safe.
Bob
-
Thanks MC, and I'll probably learn more from you..........but we will both have FUN
-
Mad Max and his Vincent Streamliner is all but finished for another run at BUB.We should be starting the bike today.Wish us luck.We do have some body work going on.but the sound of those motors are alot more exciting.
-
I think I took some pics of Mad Max and visited in the pits in '09...........Yes, I like the sound........but will it go fast?
-
can someone email me all the details or where i might find them to thanks2frank@gmail.com We went out to BUB in 2009 and had a great time but we havent been able to catch it since.
thanks all
Scott
p.s. 2011 speed week photos are up at thanks2frank.com

First off, Scott (thanks2frank), this is where all the info. is located www.bubspeedtrials.com
Next, all I ask is that you all keep us busier in impound than ever before.

Seems that the title of Performance Editor, Bikernet.com has been created.
HAEDED TO THE BUB EVENT? drag racers, flat trackers...we're interested.....
Any and all RACERS, please send Press releases and images our way and I'll do my best to see that Bikernet.com runs the info in the Thursday and/or Sunday news.
See everyone on the salt bright and early Monday morning!
Thanks.....

Cool deal, thanks Ray...

I'll be there with cameras, etc starting Sunday am. I have a commitment Saturday and can't be in two places at once (duh.)
If you want photos (cheap), let me know so I can get shots of your bike(s).
I'll also be doing the same stuff as last year and SW and uploading photos to landracing as much bandwidth will let me. I had fits with the Android phone/laptop/cell tether (using EasyTether) setup, but I think most of that was due to an overloaded tower or server. I'm crossin my fingers that it'll be a bit smoother at BUB.
I'm lookin forward to shooting the meet, hope to see as many folks as possible.
-
Ray, be sure to look me up ... we need to shake hands ... I will be there Sat AM till the end .. Maybe we can get a drink.

Please tell me if I've made a bad decision.
After racing my Honda 250cc 4stroke at Maxton Mile for 4 years I have now cleared my schedule enough to make a quick spectating trip to BUB2011 for Sunday and Monday. But I am concerned about the contagion exposure. Will it infect me? I thought high doses of salt killed most contagions but I have read many posts here on LR.com that say that apparently the salt is the problem. I hope this will not affect all my free time decisions for the remainder of my life. :-D But I must take the chance.

So, Jarl -- you haven't heard about the sign that's erected at Land's End (the location where the pavement stops on your journey to the racing area)?
The sign says "Abandon all Hope (of keeping your savings account intact) Ye Who Enter Here".
You're in trouble, sir -- but don't worry, you're also in for finding a bunch of compatriots that'll make you know it's worth it.

No, no, no. That's the inscription at the gates of hell (according to Danté.)
The last time I looked at the sign I got a subliminal message that said, in effect, "You're still hooked for life. Don't fight it."

Scooter
I look forward to the handshakin part. And a drink...as long as it's a Coke or Cream soda. :)
-
Stick a fork in Jarl ... he is done ... I am not impetuous by nature but I find myself engineering the next Bonneville build in my head all year long. Which is strange since I have 2 completed LSR motorcycles that hold records and one LSR competition coupe in work. I really dont need another project but I find myself looking on ebay for low priced cars with good aero ... I could retire from the damn job but then I wouldnt have the cash flow to keep dumping good money after bad on racing projects. I will paraphrase the boat owners warning. A land speed machine is a hole in the earth that you fill with money. Be careful citizens, this could happen to you.

Looking forward to seeing you, one more time.

Got into Wendover at 7pm last night. The feeling I get as we approach the course on route 80 never changes. My nephews were as excited as if it were Christmas. They drove out from New York. Been on the road since Wednesday. I flew out and we met at NRHS in Denver where Dan applied his dyno magic to the bike. He has done this for us every year we came and you just cant beat tuning a bike at the altitude it will race at. This will be their first Bonneville race as competitors. Joe and Cliff bought the 750cc Turbo Buell bike that Randy Smith built last year. They were able to set records with it at Loring and now they are looking forward to Bonneville. We are heading out to the salf flats in a few minutes. This sure beats wrestling with Hurricane Irene.
-

Same here. No matter how many years I've done it, for those coming up hwy Alt 93 from the south, that moment is around mile marker 32, just past a small Nevada DOT maintenance yard, up in the hills. You come around a bend, and there it is, a quick view of the salt and floating mountain.
-
When I was there for Speed Week I thought the sign read - Leave your 401K here.

busy morning ... registration line is slow and the temperatures are high .. what is really sharp is that people hand off umbrellas to people further down the line to keep the sun off them when they are through with registration. No way the original owner could be found at the end ... I had to pay the "Pain in the ass penalty" (PITAP) to Linnea because I didnt have everything filled out ... which wasnt too costly only a mango shaved ice was the fine ... the turbo bike is through tech... air temperature is at least a 100 degrees and still climbing.
-
I wish I was there this year but instead I get to have spinal surgery due to a car wreck. Next year is another story. I would have just run what ya brung this year and then went to the AHRMA races at Miller next weekend. Now I have a whole year to plan and prepare. What to build? Thinking small displacement a 125/175 Can Am or a 250 Triumph/BSA Unit Single. Hope everybody has a safe week out there, can't wait to see th pictures and read the stories and results.

Great stuff, Joe. I'd hoped to be there this evening, but didn't make it. I'll be there early in the ayem, tho. Thanks for posting the photos.
-
Wish we were there! Great pictures...

There had to be a dozen inspectors in tech but it went slow ... the extreme heat contributed to it I am sure. The inspections were very thorough. The nephews bike took 35 minutes and it passed with only a single suggestion for future events. There were well engineered bikes that I saw for the first time. The Perewitz bike which I tech inspected in Maine was complete sharp paint job on new Air Tech Charlie Toy fairings. Dave is looking for his daughter to go 200 on it ... it went 164 at Loring but did have some teething issues first time out. He feels he has it all sorted out and it sure looks ready. I saw a few familiar faces ... Leslie Porterfield was in tech line. Valerie Thompson in registration line. Dennis Manning was not happy about the International course. He said it has lumps on the big end and the salt is so dry that the drag justs skips over them. He was hoping for some light rain to soften the crust. It did drizzle late in the afternoon but we were in Wendover already so I dont know if any fell on the course. Dennis said that the mountain course is perfect as is.
-
thanks joe.
great pics and info.

Great pics Joe, good luck to you, and good luck to Don Roberts, he is due a little I think. -Dean

Thanks for the coverage Joe. Best wishes for your group to have a safe and fast meet.

Good morning race fans ... drivers meeting is just underway ... Ken Salaint is doing the intros ... great sound system I can hear it loud and clear and I am in the gas line with the bike. Rex Svaboda just started the riders instructions. Course is adequate, i5 mt took a lot work to get it to this level. International course is 9 miles. Mountain course is 5 miles. He is explaining the timing traps locations.
-
Anybody seen Jeff Boyle (BUB 7 Electrician) and his son Corbin with their black #1313 BSA out there yet? They missed Tech Inspection yesterday by a whisper and were going to get it done this AM.

Just announced that the International course is going to start from 2-1/2 mile because of the surface in the first 2 miles ... it is timed from 5-6 sooooo it is not really a long course.

Due to some personal issues, I just barely got here...well, about an hour ago. But I wasn't even close to the salt when I saw the first "mishap." I dunno why people always think they can drive on the mud, but every time....
And a quick coupla Indian photos of slightly different types.

Ray,
Thanks for the added coverage.

Got a text from the Daly boys a couple of hours ago...
Joe went 130.8 first run. Going to impound
Received Sun Aug 28, 12:44pm (Central time)
"Joe" would be Joe Daly's nephew. Congrats!
-
Here are a coupla speed shots. I wish I knew something about the bikes, but I don't.
-
Bottom photo is "Sodium Distortion". Don't know the top photo.

Thanks Ray & Rchop for the updates!

Thanks for the help, man! Sodium Distortion looks a little different from last year...if my steel trap memory hasn't screwed up again. :)

All new body work for the SD team.
-
SD has an all new party dress. Watching the body build was very interesting. Great work.

update for the 4838 team nephew Joe riding ... down run 130.082 for the record in A750/PBG ... retturn was strong over 130 entry into timed mile followed but noticeable loss of power with exit speed of 105 ... two way average 117.5xx ... get engine sealed in impound and back to pits to see what went bad. I found the rear exhaust pipe broke off about a half inch out of the hold down flange. Have the lads breaking it down and we will get it welded and be back tomorrow. good news engine and turbo are both still good for more thrashing. Ray ... stop down we at the north end right on the mtn course ... Joe
-
Now I can provide a little more info about the photos...maybe not the speeds, but the bike/rider/builder/etc.
First one is Leslie Porterfield returning after a run on the international course.
Next is Sam Wills' Big Boar Bagger that looks like it otta be towing the little pit truck.
Then young lady who raced an 80cc (or so) scooter last year...I recognized her on the Honda and she told me that shre just wanted to go faster. :) Her name is Karena Markham.
And then there's the Brough Superior with a gentleman who introduced himself as Alastair and said that since he built the bike a photo of him on it would be a good thing. I agreed.
I'm gonna head off for dinner after this and be back in the morning when the air isn't quite so hot and doesn't distort the images like that of Leslie's.

We are in the next group to go out ... running a timing test bike right now ... there are 10 down at start for each course already. Great radio signal from the 89.7 FM broadcast ... just waiting for the first launch.
It would be fantastic if someone could broadcast this FM broadcast via internet. Is that possible?
-
Yes - it is possible to stream live audio on the internet. But -- it requires someone on the salt with the proper equipment to do it. I had hoped to do some streaming of live audio at SpeedWeek and it didn't work -- 'cause we didn't have the "someone" to oversee it all. But I'm led to expect that we'll have live audio from World of Speed. It'll be our first test of airing an entire event (last year we had bits and pieces of World Finals on the air (so to speak) and it was cool, indeed.
But for now -- no Bub's. And even if we were out there with the proper conditions set - we'd still have to get permission from the powers that be to air the stuff - even though it's free and cannot be held private according to Federal law. But - courtesy demands that we ask the Bub's people for permission. And it's rather too late for any of this to happen. Maybe next year. . .
-
Hopefully I will be at BUB next year and not missing out on all the fun.
-
I am sure it is ... the local low strength FM broadcast is actually pretty good and the announcers get better as they go .... It would take some high speed racing equipment to do it ...
-
The crew at Mile 5 on the mountain course were great. Maurice and Cindy. I havent seen my favorite team on the international mile 3 .. Nick/Bob and family ... maybe tomorrow
-
Hopefully we will correct a gremlin in the steering and electrics and sharp edges and be ready for scruinteering first thing Tuesday,

Good morning race fans...or something like that. It's 6:45 and I'm parked at the Bend in the road, cuzI can get a decent signal. We had one hell of a wind/rain storm last nite. I was camped (in the Hotel Suburbia) and stayed nice and dry, but I dunno what the salt/pits/Land's End is gonna be like.
Speaking of the Bend, if you saw the photos of it from Speed Week...well, you wouldn't recognize it. That's the first 2 photos of the day. To call it a ghost town would be overstating it.
Then there's a shot of Jamie Wagner getting the green flag from the starter on his shakedown run. He'd waited for hours just to get the one run. I dunno how he did, but he wasn't trying to break a record, just see how the bike performes.
There's a map of the courses that I should have shot yesterday. I'll get a shot of it this morning (if it hasn't floated away) and give you an idea of how things are laid out.
More in a bit.
-
maybe they will have a chance to smooth the courses sometime
this week if it gets damp enough...
-
Not the best image, but here's a course map. Kinda different from SCTA courses.
Leaving the staging area:
Robin Lomberd's Visionline Suzuki 1000
Hans Versfeld's SwissPerformance Suzuki 1350
Robert Van Skyock's #1492 Honda 1000 which looks kinda evil with its red headlights..
-
Going back to the welding shop to pickup the exhaust pipe ... Hope to get it together for a run this afternoon.
-
Now that the server's back Up, I can post some of the photos I shot at Pre-Stage.
Another shot of the course map. Land's End is roughly where the BUB sticker in the upper right is placed. To leave Pre-Stage, you go in roughly the same direction (southwest) as you would from the fuel trailer to the staging lanes at an SCTA event. The major difference is that there are multiple starting lines and bikes run in both directions.
The Team Fiasco 175cc sidecar motored rather leisurely down the course.
Bob Velloza heads in the opposite direction on a Buell.
And Steve Burns rides his 1350 Suzuki back to the pits on the access road.
-
A few bikrs leaving Pre-Stage for the starting lines:
Erin Hunter on a Suzuki
Charles Ditmore, also on a Suzuki
Andreas Holder on an FIM Suzuki
And Micheal Williams on the Gear Down Ranch Suzuki. Hmmm....all Suzukis
-
Hey, Ray -- please keep an ear open (if you've got the time) for the speed that Erin runs. Nancy and I both rode that bike a year or so ago - and both of us got it to about 186-187. We're curious to see what the owner can do with it. Thanks.
-
She just ran and backed up a record. I can't be positive, but I think she ran very close to that speed. I just checked with the guys ar the International Mile Zero station and they tell me that nshe ran 185 and change to back it up. Btw, Andy and Stacey say, hi." :)
-
Dang, gotta leave for work in a few minutes. I'll monitor from there on the iPad (Tapatalk).

Speaking of which, anybody knows how Gilles Gagne (G-Force) did? I know he was hoping to do well today because he wants to go down to the 350 class with the same bike he's trying out in the 650 right now. He's crazy enough to try and do that by cancelling 2 cylinders off his R6. Interesting!

I don't have a clue about ballast rules. Like Geo, I'm a car guy...which probably explains my lack of knowledge about a whole lotta things regarding bikes. Ohh..except that BUB has 3 basic classifications: "Run what ya Brung" (Time Only, more or less), AMA and FIM. Most of the pre-entries are in the AMA classification and their classes are similar in name to SCTA's. Maybe SSS can shed some light on this, but I don't understand why a Honda runs in P-P (which I thought was Production Pushrod.)
Anyway, here are a coupla shots of Leslie Porterfield (on a P-P 1000 Honda) and a couple of Peg Leg Craig Anderson in his Sidecar Streamliner.
-
Ray:
I don't know much about AMA classification, but in SCTA parlance, P-P stands for Production (engine), Production (bodyworks and chassis). To designate a pushrod-type production bike you'd show P-PP (production engine, production body parts, and pushrod engine).
I've got a copy of the FIM rules and classes -- but they'd drive you far more batty than you already are -- and we don't need that, do we?
-
I've been fighting to get my Android tether to work most of the afternoon on the salt and finally gave up. I'm at the Bend in the Road where I have much better connectivity. Here are a few more photos:
293 Simon Edwards, Kawasaki, 184.205
553 Jeff Cauby, Suzuki saluting the starter as he passes by.
1966 Tracy Snider kicking up a little salt (more like mud at that end) on her Suzuki. I didn't get speeds for her or Simon...I was running back and forth between camera and computer.
1948 Andy Sills on a BMW gets his helmet and visor checked before his run. His speed was 194.546.
That's it until tomorrow, I'm gonna try to cool this Burb off a bit (it's 101 inside) and cool myself off with some ice water.

Aha! That 'splains it. Now it makes sense. As far as FIM regs...no, I've tried to comprehend 'em and FIA regs as well. How do you think I got this batty?

Ok ...long day ... after getting the pipe welded in Wendover ... we got the bike back together but I wasnt as familiar as I should be with the Garrett Waste gate adjustment ... after 3 phone calls to Randy Smith -( Long distance turbo tuner), I got it right and Cliff went 129 for a record in APS 750 PBG .... My brother Tom (Joe and Cliff dad) is flying in tonight. He finally got a flight out of the east coast. He will race tomorrow with his sons and I will be back to spectator status from transport driver, crew chief, mechanic and lunch provider. It would be cheaper to pay for the hotel then to feed these 2 guys.
-
Ray - I missed you all day with the my team responsibilities ... I will try and find you in the morning ... Joe

Joe, man you are a busy guy this year,,, Tell Joe and Cliff congrats on the records,, now it's time for Tom to get a record when he gets there...
What record did Joe and Cliff get so far ?
See you in a few weeks.

Ray - I missed you all day with the my team responsibilities ... I will try and find you in the morning ... Joe
Don't sweat it, Joe. You're wearin several hats and it's hard to wear 'em all the time. I did the same thing at WoS last year (driving Texican's "race truck" and tryin to do coverage) and it'll be more of the same this year, since I'll have my own car and 2 guys that I've promised rides to as well.
Anyway, your photos are very much appreciated.

Has the Max Lambky Vincent Black Lightning streamliner been on the course yet?
-
Here are some non-racing (more or less) photos to staqrt the day.
First one is the track map that kinda fills in where the staging lane map left off.
Then a list of AMA records as of yesterday.
and lovely Linnea with her alien antennae and a smile.
I'm gonna cruise the pits to see what I can find.
-
Has the Max Lambky Vincent Black Lightning streamliner been on the course yet?
If it has, I haven't seen it. I'll see what I can find as I cruise the pits.
-
It didn't take long to find out about Max's liner. After I passed the CCCP (USSR?) pit with a Swiss flag (?!?!) I ran into Bo Miller who told me that he was in Impound with his Triumph after qualifying for a record. He must have been on the short or "Mountain" course cuz he said the bike handled like a dream. I'll get photos of it when I can.
But right after that, I stumbled upon the Lambky pits and saw the liner in quite a state if disassembly. I talked to Stainless (Bob Steele) who told me that they'd made one "shakedown" run and the course was so rough that it shook all sorts of things loose...including tripping the mercury switch that controls the main chute...which then deployed and just made matters worse. A bearing for an idler pulley was also damaged, so Max went into town to get one (along with some coffee.)
Then, after pulling the Burb around so I could edit and post the photos, Belen Wagner came by and introduced herself. She and her dad are both racing, she's on her sit-on bike, he's in a streamliner called "Der Fliegende Thunfisch" (The Flying Tuna) which has a 2-stroke moter....and an exhaust leak which allows the smoky, oily stuff into the cockpit. They were trying to find the location of the leak when I asked if I could get a quick photo od dad and daughter.
More as I get it.
-
You seem some pretty strange things on the salt. When I saw 2 women heading out from the pit area, one of whom had a broom and the other a camera, I knew what was gonna happen, having seen the shots of this sort last year.
The woman on the broom is Rita and just became Mrs. Larry Cason this morning. I guess I missed the wedding. :)
I didn't get the other woman's name, but I would have forgotten it, anyway.
Here's the result shot, followed by the "how they did it" shot.

Cliff went 132 on his down run ... went to impound for his return run ...

Charles Steinman on his BMW just after a run...he was on his way to get his timing slip...I dunno how fast he ran.
Lars workin on his blown nitro-burning flathead Harley...he hasn't gotten it to run yet.
And a kool vintage Indian parked in the pits.

The picture of Charles Steinman, sitting on his bike -- is a great one for him to use as a Christmas card or a photo in his office. Good background, well-lighted, the mountains and the sky present fine contrast. You did well, Ray. See if he'll buy it.

Two more.
Well...I just don't know what to say...except that they musta got that seal awful drunk to get her to give her approval to that.
Thai Willie's recumbent GXR-powered bike. He spent a long time explaining his handling problems (instability at 150 and above) and telling me the plans for next year, which include going to a "Can-Am" two-wheeled front end and redistribution of the bike's weight to put more on the rear wheel. I also found out that it doesn't have handlebars nor steering wheel, but uses a joystick steering controller. Sounds like something Big Daddy Roth might have cooked up.
I'm gonna head for the staging lanes after I get a bite of lunch.

As I was about to head off for lunch, I noticed a pretty good example of a P-PP bike...a Honda that looks like a Moto Guzzi.
Then I'd posted something on Facebook about the ERC guys having the best t-shirts at the salt flats meets and got a question about getting the shirts online. I looked up their site: http://www.ercracingfuels.com/ (http://www.ercracingfuels.com/) and didn't see anything, so I asked and was told that if ya call 'em, they'll make sure ya get a shirt (you'll probably have to pay for 'em tho. :-D)
And as I was gettin ready to post this, Wobbly Walrus drove up with his bike on a trailer and told me that he'd bumped his own FIM record to somewhere around 130. Way to go!
Ohh... thought I saw Max Lambky's liner heading down the track as I was asking about the t-shirts...looks like they got it back together and are running again...but I think they ran it on the Mountain course, which is a whole lot smoother than the International course.

Some from Pre-Stage.
First, Pre-Stage itself. The lanes are for "Run What Ya Brung", Short Course, International Short Course and Long Course.
The Stuart Hooper Velocette from Australia...he ran 145 yesterday and is trying to become not only the "World's Fastest Velocette" but the "World's Fastest 1-Lung Bike." I don't know exactly what that record is but the team intimated that it was around 148 or so.
And a coupla vans that caught my eye. First, apparently the inhabitants of the Ford van didn't "bust" cuz they're here.
Finally, the Coconut Customs tow van...there was some question about the tubes attached to the rear axle, which they claimed were full of salt for ballast, but others were suggesting that they might be JATO tubes...I dunno... Ohh...I'm also not sure about that claim of "Free Candy." I know some cops who might just take that entirely wrong and apply the handcuffs real quick.

In '02 Keenan Tatro popped off a 149.045 on his 500cc Harley. Thats the fastest single I know of.
Any word on Lars?

Thanks for the info on Tatro's record. Last time I saw Lars, he had the carb off the bike and was invoking some sort of Viking curse/spell in hopes of getting the bike to run...which it hasn't done yet.

I'll just quote the starting line official I spoke with: "We're done." The first photo shows it pretty clearly. Winds from hell, not expected to get better for a coupla days. So I'm outta here.
I'll add 2 more images. A small flock of sparrows that seem to be lost...maybe grounded by the wind. The were wandering around the pits looking for handouts, I spose.
Finally, I was given two "In memory of Cliff Gullett" stickers for my race car. They'll be on there when we run at WoS. Speaking of which, I better get back home and go to work.
It's been fun.

Glen, you're right...but that 12 mph is the lowest forecast for the day...Wunderground shows wind from 12 to 19 tomorrow. Many people have already folded their tents and gone...I'm gonna be among 'em. I've got plenty to do between now and WoS.

Joe, if Dan is still there, ask him for the torque specs for when you put that head back on. The manual precedure is hard to follow, but Dan has a good way to go. That should measure out at 3.050" X 3.125" = 748cc

I was on the salt thru Tuesday evening Aug 30th.
I saw Al Lamb #1979 1000-MPS-BF Honda throw down down a one way of 231.023 mph

I do have an intuitive feeling that someone probably went faster than Lamb’s above pass……….

I am home from BUB and unpacking. Al Lamb may have been the official fastest, but I am absolutely sure I was the unofficial "fastest". My engine threw a rod way before the timing tower and I coasted through at 210. That really felt like a good run and the bike was going so fast I couldn't see much because the wind force was forcing my helmet against my eyes and distorted my vision. I had my new bodywork on and had good hopes that it would help with a good speed. Unfortunately I did not pay much attention to the fact that the open area where the forks are forced air up through the body right into my helmet. That area should have been sealed somehow.
Oh well, next year.
Thanks to all the BUB volunteers. They were all very helpful and made everything run smoothly this year.
Don, BUB 2011 unofficially the fastest. That's my story and I am sticking to it.

Does anyone know what speed Steve Burns GSX Suzuki 1350 ran? #798 MAG1350

Nancy and I were on the way home this afternoon when we got a call from a Bub's participant. He told us of the intense racing going on in the AMA 1000 Production class, among other things. He went on to report that one of the bikes gave an indication of "funky gas" or something, having been running strong 196-197.5 or so all week -- just like the other P/P 1000 bikes. But then -- viola, the bike ran a 201 (and backed it up with a 199). Maybe it was fuel, maybe not.
But when the bike was protested (and forgive me for perhaps getting the story mixed up -- I was driving - - but the gist of the story is about right, I think) - the officials were pretty easy on the competitor that was accused - saying that they would test the fuel when they felt like it. They wouldn't let the accuser protest the bike and runs - 'cause the protested wasn't the rider. So the rider was presented to protest -- and that didn't go well, either. Well, sooner or later -- the entrant that owned the bike in Impound elected to withdraw the bike and allow the record to continue unclaimed -- thereby forever making further investigation of the fuel (and everything else, for that matter) impossible.
I'm not trying to add fuel to the fire, and will be willing to be corrected if you have better or more accurate details. Nancy and I wonder, though -- what rules and sanctions does SCTA for knowingly violating the gas-class rules - by running an illegal gas? Ejection from the event? Ejection from Impound? A shake of the finger and a shouted "Naughty, naughty"? And so on. I do remember, I think, that a protest may be filed with the officials in Impound by the transfer of a $100 bill, which either goes to the bike under protest if it is found to be legal after all -- or back to the protestor if the bike is found to be illegal.
But what else can happen? Dan - is there a procedure and a rule that discusses this? I've looked in the rule book and don't see one - at lest, I don't see one yet. Let us know, please. Thankee very mooch.
-
Looks like I left too early on Thursday ... the fun was just starting
-
Yeah, but I bet they couldn't sleep at night or look themselves in the mirror in the morning. That's, apparently with some, the best policing.
-
I know what happens when you go outside the cones and return to the course. I'd hate to think what would happen if you used fuel instead of gas in the gas class but drawing and quartering comes to mind. : - )
-
Well Jon, there is a SCTA-BNI protest procedure in your rulebook, page 11, section 1.I.
The record must be protested within 24 hours of certification. That way it ensures that someone at the event is on-site and (hopefully) aware of the details of the record. If someone wants to protest a record 2 or more weeks following the event they are SOL. A gas class entry MUST use ERC provide event gasoline and run with a sealed tank which is checked a minimum of two times.
Protests are handled as soon as possible, we cleared a car protest at Speed Week within 36 hours and awarded a record.
A situation like the one reported is the exact reason that the Bonneville 200 MPH Club does not recognize AMA records. If FIM Charlie is on-site and certifies the record the rider will awarded all due honors for the FIM record.
-
I remember a number of years ago hearing about a Streamliner that set a Gas Record on Fuel, drained the tank at the 7 mile, then appeared at Impound with Gas refilled in the tank. I don`t know wether that was pre sealed tanks, but I recall that the Team was banned for life. Memory may be suspect here, as the Driver is back and driving another Streamliner, currently....I`m sure you remember that incident, Dan...
-
....... and a fast stream liner at that. :-o Tony
-
If someone wants to protest a record 2 or more weeks following the event they are SOL.
With all due respects Dan, what about Mark Miller's record and his two club entry? They were taken away after six months. Tony
-
KP, KH got a year..the other person got life..go figure.
-
what did that bike have some kind of jet fuel..?..
-
Again, Joe -- I wasn't there and only heard things third-hand, so to speak -- but my "source" told me that the suspect fuel was a mixture of kerosene, cough syrup, and Amo fluid.
-
Tony,
That was before and because the 24 hour rule was put into place.
DW
-
Kiwi Paul,
The incident actually took place at El Mirage. As a part of the penalty all the team's gasoline records were removed from the database. The driver claimed innocence and was allowed to come back. The car went on to someone else.

Not saying that I know what's going on, but there are different grades of gasoline available to run in the "gas" class. S/He could have drained their tank and had it resealed with spec gas that made the motor run faster. Production records don't have to be on MULB.

Thanks for the great pics and coverage Joe & Ray. Great to see you again Joe, and Ray - Iam still lookin forward to shaking your hand. Making a couple day stop at Moab since Babs spends her Birthday the last 5 years at BUB so me and the Gray Ghost can have some fun, now its her turn. The Gray Ghost is goin home a happy camper, bumped up our personal best speed and bringing home our second LSR. Already thinking what we need to do for next year, for some strange reason we feel a need to go a little bit faster.
A big thanks to Denis, Delvene, Lenea, and all the great BUB volunteers.

Jon, It seems very unfair to post an accusation and from an unknown "source." This leads down a course full of speculation. If someone has a protest let them file it with the officials. For all we know other factors such as course conditions along with good tuning where the source of the mph. As an example you posted that there were high winds on the course and I recall drivers/riders in the past seeing the wind turn in their favor at just the right time. And may all of the contestants sleep well at night knowing they gave it their all.
-
When will the results be posted on records etc??
-
I think Slim reported fairly. He doesnt make the news he just reports it. There are no names mentioned and if you are of a mind to investigate it, I am sure you could confirm or deny the incident. As it stands it does stir some interest.

I was the timer and remember the run and the testing as well as a witness who saw the change that was done off to the side of the return road. I also set in on the meetings and when KH presented his case. It was done fairly and he was reinstated. The car owner was banned from future running.

Thanks Dan and Glen for filling in the gaps from what I had been told. I wasn`t at El Mirage for that meet, I think I had already moved one State North......but my point was to illustrate that there has been some History of fuel swapping/tampering. It seems a shame that there are people willing to do questionable things to wear a certain colour Hat, or get ones name in print somewhere....Land Speed Racing events get way fewer examples, but humanity being what it is........ :x

I feel the same way ... she is a real sweetheart.

The long ride home is over, mile after mile, wondering, questioning, thinking, feeling the pain of poor performance.
Next year, next year, gonna go faster next year.
A long ride home, thinking of moments shared with fellow racers and volunteers, meals shared with fellow racers and volunteers.
Friendship is best when served with salt.
Getting another rider started and watching them go faster each pass. Sharing parts with other racers, who catch the new record.
The smile will still be there for a while. Next year, next year, God willing next year.

What is MULB??
-
ERC, the fuel vendor for SCTA/BNI at Bonneville, makes MUL/B - and, according to this spec sheet -- MUL/A as well. I don't know the difference between /A and /B -- but do know we use the MUL/B in the production high-compression motor. It's got about 104 octane, I think it is, and nearly 3% oxygenated content. Whatever I say is only memory -- here, look it up yourself:

I dont think they make mul/b anymore. That is a definite maybe. :-D

Jon, Master of All Things in English Class, but maybe not so much in French? Did I really detect a spelling mistake in one of your posts? No it cannot be. I know that you were not attempting to say "Voila". You really did mean to say "viola" because of the beautiful timbre and pitch of the engine in question with all four of its cylinders working in harmony just like the four strings of the viola. Not the higher pitch of a two stroke sounding like a violin nor the lower pitch of a V-Twin sounding like a string bass. Ahhhh, now I have a grasp of the situation and all is right in the world again.

Wow, now I'm confused. Just as you said Jon the MUL/A on the ERC site says it has 2.7% added oxygen component. I guess I thought that when oxygen is added it was no longer considered gas but was now fuel. When I add "a little oxygen" in the form of N2O for some reason it is considered fuel  So if we know what it is called, as the old joke said, "aren't we just arguing over the price?" But I know that the 2.7% just makes the engine feel that Bonneville isn't really quite as high or hot as it is. As I always say, we all play with the same rules. But since we are all racing against history that is also why I get frustrated when rules are changed for non-safety reasons which either helps or hinders current racers beat old records.
So I am really just saying I am surprised at the added O2 in the gas. But since gas records have been set using it, then don't change it now that I am going next year :-D
-
Jarl, I think I'm safe in suggesting that you go back through all of my posts - to see if I've ever spelled the word correctly. I mi-spell with malice aforethough, having fun with the unwashed masses. You, sir, are the first one to callme ono it, though, and so you get the Gold Star for the day. (Wish I knew how to draw a gold star here.)
-
Dr J,
My understanding to be Legal in "gas class" the Main stipulation is that you must buy the GAS from the on site event gas vendor...and have tank sealed... so if one or two of the choices from the vendor are oxygenated.. then that works,,,
Have fun see you in a few weeks...

I agree theres no class compliance checking at Bubs. I saw bikes in impound that were clearly illegal in their class like with an aftermarket pipe and air cleaner on a production bike and streamlining on a naked class bike. The only thing they ever check is motor size. I don't think the tech guys understand the class rules so they don't even bother checking for it. In fact I've seen them give out flat out wrong info when asked a classing question. They also don't enforce the rule about upclassing theres lots of cherry picking softer records. I like the idea of an all bike event and admire Bubs for putting it on but the tech is really lacking in this area and that makes the records not worth much. Drew should fix it.

Not so sure that the classifications are soft in relation to production. Last year a record was recorded for a non production air cleaner.
-
So when does BUB post the event run sheets so I can see who went 201 in 1000 P-P on the "funky gas"
-
I think only records are posted, not all runs.
-
in the past, all runs for each day have been posted 4 bub.
it might take awhile but they get posted.

Fueling rumors is not helpful to those accused, but the truth will come out eventually. I was at the starting line with Leslie on Wednesday. She was still riding.
It would be very easy to fill some gas tanks through the vent holes with the main seal unbroken. If it is a concern, why is fuel not tested for additives in impound?
-
The SCTA loves many but trusts few. All gas is tested in impound. Shame BUB doesn't do that. Maybe their records would be more accepted.

Ok, ok, you have several acusations here mr. VeeTwin - Can you back them up with photo or other documentation to prove your acusations ? Why did you not voice those concerns at impound and place a valid protest ? Where is the "flat out wrong info when asked" and who asked it ? Enough blowviating here mr. VeeTwin - provide the names and proof of your acusations or go home and try again next year.
Drew and all the volunteers at BUB have put forward a sincere effort to provide a respectable motorcycle only event with AMA and FIM sanctioning. If you feel that you have been slighted, I sugest you take it up with AMA Ken, or FIM Charlie, and not just sling acusations around like a school yard kid that did not get what he wanted, or expected. Provide the evidence -
I for one thank the entire BUB crew for their efforts to provide this sanctioned event. If you are that unhappy with it - - don't blame Drew or any of the volunteers who are doing their best to make it happen. If you can do a better job - Volunteer next year for the tec crew - Come on now - step up - don't just flap jaw - - -
A big time thanks to Drew - Delvene - Lenea - Denis - and all the BUB Volunteers for a great Internationaly known event.
Just my not so humble opinion, take it or leave it.

After reading through the BUB rules, I do have a question/observation. Is this correct?
Unlike SCTA and ECTA, BUB considers the exhaust as part of the frame. A Production motorcycle in SCTA would be considered a P-P in BUB (e.g. My Production Busa would be a 1350 P-P). However, adding an aftermarket exhaust would only reclassify the frame, hence the 1350 MPS-P designation. Both reiterations would be "considered" Production in BUB, while ECTA considers them a world apart. No?
-
I think the BUB AMA rules are copies of older SCTA rules and a pipe would put you in MPS-G.

I just want to take this opportunity to express our gratitude and appreciation to Leslie Porterfield and her crew, namely Jeff the tire guy, for their help given to my daughter this year at the BUB. After cutting a rear tire while in the timed mile on a return run, we thought we were done for the week. We put out a notice looking for a tire. A very helpful staff member came by and suggested we go check with Leslie's pit. Leslie not only had a spare tire, but also the correct size for our Honda. She also saw that we got the tire mounted and balanced right then and there. We had the tire back on the bike and ready to run in less than an hour after pulling into the pits. My daughter went on to further increase her speed for the week.
Once again, thanks to Leslie and her crew!

Always nice to hear the good stories from the meet especially with the bad one we have had.

Leslie and Al lent me a sprocket, a couple of years ago, that helped me get the production record. Great people.

I would also like to note that this year Drew and the Tech. crew did a outstanding job inspecting our sidecar for safety..... they did not miss a thing...............................................................................
And certainly a big thanks to all the people who worked the event and to Denis Manning and Delvene

And finally a thank you to the AMA and FIM for giving us the option of using a passenger in the sidecar.
