Last year I had a mechanical failure in the door mechanism that prevented me from exiting the vehicle after a run.
I was able to 'Jerry rig' (*note; I have no idea who Jerry is or why he is so famous for rigging) and get the handle to work but vowed to make a better latch system.
The OEM Fiat handles are junk and I want to do a new latch similar to what many others are currently running.
My question is that will it be OK for me to remove this lever all together and put a plate in its place? The plastic housing is broke to duke and do not want any misconceptions from safety crews trying to open the door using a disabled handle. (*even though the new one will be clearly marked ;) )
So is it OK for me to shave the handle?

JH;
That "Jerry-rigged" expression came about during the War-- Germans were refered to as "Jerries" by the British and it was a disparaging remark about how someone did something.
It is also how the term "Jerry Can" originated. (5gal gas cans)

It's easier to get a dispensation than permission.

If you are not making your car more "aero-dynamic" than stock I would see no problem. If the stock one "hangs out in the air" I would replace it with one that does the same thing. If it's flush stock, then another one that's flush should surfice.
An example would be putting a 50 Ford push button where a 49 Ford push down to me would be OK; but replacing the 49 push down with a 2006 flush mount maybe asking for trouble. Good Luck.................

This handle is very flush...no aero advantage by removing. I just dont like the idea of having 2 door handles, one real one disabled. Truth be known the ball knob at the base of the window is worse for aeros then the oem latch.

Door mechanism does not have to be OEM.

Looks like a good candidate for replacement might be off of a Gremilin/Hornet/Javalin.

"Jerry-rig" is derived from "jury-rig", a centuries-old nautical term for improvised repairs.
