Title: BUB Unlimited Engine Question
Post by: donpearsall on May 11, 2011, 02:48:59 AM
What does this mean in the BUB rule book: "12. Q. UNLIMITED GASOLINE (UG) There can be no advancement in class for Supercharger/ Turbocharger." I just can't seem to see what this means. Can a UG engine class have a turbo or not?
I emailed Drew about this several days ago but no response.
Anyone figure this one out?
Don

Don, That sounds like the words straight out of the SCTA rulebooks back in the 70s and early 80s.  A turbo or supercharger advanced you 2 engine classes unless you were a streamliner.  I believe the AMA was involved with the SCTA then, but they separated and the AMA records went dormant until the Bub resurrected them.  They started with the old rules, and have been modifying to keep up.  My guess is that your question will start them head scratching, Drew may be seeking info from a higher authority  :-)

The AMA rulebook takes the worst of the SCTA wording. Good luck trying to figure out ANY class combination. This must be the worst rulebook in the world. Oh, wait . . . That would be the FIM rulebook. No wait . . . Is it the SCTA rule book? The all suck when it comes to clarity of rules.

Unlimited is just like it sounds. Open to any unconventional means (Wankel for instance) of producing power. Stainless is correct, the old school method of advancing in class displacement to even the playing field for turbochargers is what it refers to. Long dead.

I don't think anybody that actually runs has anything to do with the rules.
"Chapter 5 MODIFIED (M) CLASS - 5. J. OPEN CLASS*
Open class motorcycles do not permit streamlining."

And then it goes on to tell you what streamlining is permitted.

Kind of like dealing with the EPA:  "We don't interpret the rules, we just enforce them."
