Hi Gang
The lakester is ready once again so were going to try and run at the May meet I'm hoping to add another step to my license. We ran her on a rear wheel dyno now I have a base line for the air fuel ratio which is 12.83 I think its a bit lean so IM going to fatten up the main jets a bit. Anyone have any thoughts on that?
The old 1950 Ford flathead ran pretty good for her age pulling well over double the stock HP at the rear wheels. Here's a Youtube link to the run.

Great video. The bellytank must be a blast to drive. I have a lot of respect for guys that run the flat head motors. I would like to stop by in May and check it out up close.
We go back to the dyno the first week of May can,t wait.

Me if the new window net gets here
-
We are entered and the bikes are about ready. I have some roadracing to get through first though.
-
No substitute motor for the Studebaker yet (while the "E" is being rebuilt).
May take the Vicky motor out when I get back from the cruise, but that leaves no time to fiddle around,,, have a line on a substitute long block 302 SBC, if that works out I may bolt on my old intake, dist, and carb and run that "D" motor.. only problem is I run 18 degree heads with the Stahl/Brodix Header flanges so my headers will not mate to regular SBC 6 header bolt heads.. Trying to locate an adaper flange now ???
The THRASH will be a Mad One...

Charles, I know it's darn near impossible to do -- but think about going to Maxton without a ride. You'll have a much more relaxed time, have time to chat with the folks that are there, maybe help with some of the volunteer chores, and who knows what else. If you thrash hard to get something to race -- great. If you don't - you'll enjoy yourself just about as much.
It was hard to learn this, I assure you -- but finally I can go to a meet and not suffer too much from "I wish I had a race vehicle" here syndrome.
-
We will be there but I'm not sure the car will be ready to run competitively. Daytime job and having to work on the car in the driveway (read weather controls build time) is cutting it close. with any luck Amy can atleast get some shake down runs in. She is helping on the car as much as she can. If nothing else we can get it to tech and see what, if anything, we missed :-o see ya there.
-
SSS I truly do appreciate your comments and I understand that for most folks that would be true... But for me it would be hard to go to the track without a car, unless I did everything within my budget and physical capabilities to be there with the car, by working up to the 11th. hour. After knowing I did all I could and the was not ready, Then and only then could I go to the track without my ride.
Maybe you are right and maybe I should follow your advice.... but I know me and I will thrash to the bitter end to show up with the car,,, but either way I will be there in some capacity.
I help a lot of folks,, so when I get back from the cruise I may be calling in a few chips to get help a few eveings May 9,10,11 and 12..

Charles,
I wish Matt and I lived closer by because we are both up for the thrash...Matt's one of those guys that works a 9 hour day, then works in the shop until 3 am. You have our moral support. I know that and a ham sandwich equals nothing but we believe in you.
You will have something to drive May 14Th I am sure. Put that "D" motor in I will run on "C" or "A." I remember when I managed some Motorsports programs for Toyota...the motor truck would show up with racks of motors and drive line parts. It was s sight to see. It would be nice to have a couple of identical motors to be ready for these issues but hey anybody can swap a motor. It takes real dedication to stay up for days and show up to tech line with the silicone sealer still tacky! Have fun, rest up then thrash!

Charles if you can't get the motor in the Stude done .Then why not run the vickey?
-
I have a new fuel system and injectors .... looks like i can turn the nitrous up some more :-)
or maybe run nitromethane .....
Roy
-
To the OP - 12.8 is close to best power for modern bikes, not sure about flatheads. But 12.8 on the dyno isn't necessarily 12.8 on the track, do you have a AFR logger?
Roy I would LOVE to smell some nitro at Maxton, please please please  Don't tip the can too much, kitty litter shuffle and such.
I plan to trek to Texas for their first May meet, and will therefore miss Maxton. I'll be following closely online and the phone, best of luck to all.

The Air fuel reading was on the dyno so I agree there would be some variation. In April after two runs the plugs looked fine but I don't have an AFR logger on the car. When I opened up the engine after the April meet everything looked good so IM still not sure if I need to go any fatter. The flathead can only live with a small amount of spark lead max about 24 degrees total other than that I think the air fuel ratio should be similar to any other gas burning engine.
Hey Charlie bring the sedan if the E motor is not ready its a cool Hot Rod
-
Charles if you can't get the motor in the Stude done .Then why not run the vickey?
Eric,,, points...they stay with the car not the driver... plus the Vicky is now set up for 1/8 and 1/4 mile...
I need to run the Studebaker,,, this year I have a chance to make all 5 Maxton events, and would like to do it.

Just got in from the shop about 10 mins ago... missed the Tuesday Chat but for a good reason,,, was unloading the
302 SBC long block I wheeled and dealed for,,, It is a 23 degree Iron Head, solid lift cam motor,,, not the fancy stuff I am use to..
Needs a good intake, carb, water pump, distributor, plugs and wires, alternator and front drive assembly,,, good news I have all of that. Just ordered the adapter flanges to adapt those heads to my headers..
Looks like I shall make it to Maxton with a decent D motor...nothing radical... once I hear and feel it run we will all speculate on MPH ... this will be fun.... stress level decreasing now that long block is in my possession.

Looks like we will be able to get the truck back together after our unfortunate breakage on the last pass...
Thanks SO MUCH to all those who helped us get the truck off the race track after it broke... sorry to hold things up a bit!
Praying for great weather and NO OIL DOWNS!!!

Dean, let us know how Beeville is. We were planning on the Texas trip for Memorial Day weekend, but decided to let them get an event under their belt their first. I'll miss not seeing you at Maxton and being able to lean on you for answers to questions. Best of luck there.

Well we went well before we broke and our last pass was a licensing run that took a record, at half throttle for half the track. So we are hopeful for a pretty fast pass next go around.
-
Well life rolls on. The plant where I work is being sold. If I have a job on May 14 I will have to work the race weekend for training on the new systems at the plant. Oh well on more month to work on the car. Amy is not happy. She needs her "go fast fix" real bad. :-D. Maymaps we'll see everyone in June. Be safe.

Well I was hoping to have my '54 Parilla 175cc bike ready with an engine rebuild but it now looks doubtful. I tore it apart and found that even though mine is the Sport model it only had a normal head (both valves are 2mm smaller). So I found a Sport head in Germany and got it here but now the machinist is taking longer than expected to machine the valve seat. I definitely don't want to rush the details on a bike that's older than I am.
So I will just have to concentrate on my Honda 250cc and maybe run it on Nitrous again.....It is a Laughing Gas afterall. Just have to recheck the wiring on it.
-
Never rush a machinist or a wiatress. You might get spit in your soup.
-
Also - don't rush your typing fingers or you might misspell waitress.
-
Oops :-o more like typing thumbs.
-
10 days till tech inspection. Remember the entrance will be up the road from where we normally come in.
-
Slim and Nancy are we going to get to see y'all this time? Dr. J--just bring the Parilla to look at, I don't have enough pictures yet!
-
NO - not unless you're at the wedding in Denver. Justin Gelsinger (Nancy's boy) is marrying Janine What's-her-name that weekend. We're taking Amtrak, just for the novelty of it, and will be gone 'til the Tuesday following. We'll have the 'puter with us, though, so while we can't do any reporting about the racing -- we can send along play-by-play of the wedding and the festivities.
No, you won't be able to watch the consummation of the marriage!
-
But will you have screaming audio?
-
(I meant streaming.)
-
But will you have screaming audio?
Now that was a clever comment Stan. Made me smile.
-
I could have responded with something like "Only if we both take our proper Viagra-type tablets" -- but note that I didn't so respond. It's a personal thing -- no need to discuss it with you preverts.
-
We will crank it up and run the new gear in on jack stands. Change the plugs, pull the primary oil filter cut it open if no shiney things we will load up on Thurs and head out Thurs night. A short 10 hour drive and we are ready to have fun!

jon w while in denver area, might as well have some food and visit with J. Gowetski, and J. Amo, possibly Stainless and some others...
if ya make it north to black hills of sd, stay with us..
-
A call, maybe -- more if there's time. Our train arrives Friday morning - and the first wedding "event" is big lunch that day. Sunday afternoon might be slack time -- I'll find out more. Thanks for the reminder about who lives in that neighborhood.
-
Do you have wheels while in Denver? Call Johnboy, he has plenty of rolling stock. PM me for his number if you need transportation.
-
Well, hubby's new job may interfere with May's meet. He will need to be on call the same weekend :-( So looks like we will miss this meet. Just gives us extra time to finish the build on the Camaro!
Charles - It definately is different attending the meets without a vehicle. My 1st one was pretty easy. After that I found it to be more difficult. Good luck with the thrash to prepare for next weekend!
-
I just got in from Tampa, the Cruise Vacation was GREAT very relaxing,, every day we tried the "drink of the day" WOW I am still vacating the alcohol !!!!...
I went down to the shop and NO Motor was there,, guess I will have to call my motor man tomorrow and see if he has it done and just did not deliver it to my shop ?? oh my this weeks thrash may be thrashier than anticipated,,,Oh well here we go again,,,
I will keep you all posted,,,
Plan is to still make Maxton Friday with the Stude.

Rebecca and I will be leaving Chicago Thursday morning to arrive at the track on Friday afternoon. We will be running the 1954 BMW R25/3 in the the 250cc Production Vintage class (P/PV - 250) and possibly a few other 250cc Vintage classes. Hoping to up our standing records in the 250 Vintage categories. It has been a long winter of engine mods and dyno tuning, I hope it all pays off...

Looking forward to seeing your 250 I hope Dr J gets his ready.
-
Going to miss the May meet, Motorcycle Shop has an Open house. June for sure! Have another motor prepared, in the bike and running! Found the causes for the holed piston and all the smoke, remedies are in place. Fitting bodywork now! Have fun everybody
-
truck trailer and all gear is loaded up. we roll out at 0400 tomorrow morning!
-
If all goes well, we should be there Friday..Paul..
-
Slow going on the engine install,,, I just came in from the shop..7 straight hours with no break... nothing went right, nothing bolted back in on the new motor... Seems like GM Small Blocks are not all the same,,, My motor and mid mounts bolted right up to the motor but when we dropped the in the motor was not in the same location, it was lower and at a slight angle.. I called places and was told the 3 motor mount bolt pads on each side can vary ir to 1/4 " as that factory allows that much tolerance (rubber mounts are forgiving) but solid mounts are not.
Headers would not fit, just a bunch of problems,,,
But now the motor and headers and all is in and correct now...
Tomorrow I need to install the radiator and fan, check all oils and fluids, change rear gear, drain fuel cell, change fuel filter, gas up and test run engine.. then load the truck and trailer, then load the car. hmm sounds simple ??
If all goes well and I don't pass out from exhaustion, I hope to be at Maxton by Noon on Friday.

We load up and roll out tonight from Nashville with the no longer wheelless black Sonoma. New wheels thanks to Wheelsmith and some repairs and other little upgrades. We finished last night around 12 and we still have to make a push bar before we roll today. See you all there!
-
I should have the motor cranked and run in a bit by 7pm tonight. If my aching feet and joints hold up we may load trailer tonight if not we will load in the morning and hit the road for Maxton by 11am. be thee before 2:00pm.
Charles

We got on the road at 11pm. ETA 11am. Our plan was to leave at 8pm...better late than never. Charles, when you called my battery died on my cell sorry.
