Title: R1 Tires from Dunlap, how fast are they allowed to go?
Post by: MattStrube on January 04, 2011, 09:04:28 PM
I tried searching for these tires with no luck.  Does anyone know how fast the Dunlap R1 tires are rated to go safely at Bonneville?  Looking to run them on a 200mph Firebird.  I'm trying to get the look of the Kugel Firebird.  Thanks.

Matt, What would you like to know about the Kugel car? The only reason I ask is because the car was originally owned by McDonald & Pitts and the Kugels purchased it from them. The cage in the car is no longer legal to run at a SCTA event and the car sits in the NHRA museum for now. If you're looking for pictures of cages I would suggest the build diaries on this site. Lots of people on here have built very nice cages that are safer and legal. Good luck.

I have seen the Dunlops that we run at LSR go in the 250 MPH range.

Thanks, I have a rule book, but I wasn't sure on the tires.  What did they update from 99 (in general) to the cage requirements?  Just curious.  M

As far as I know they haven't updated anything. I don't think the car will ever run again. There's too much that needs to be done to make the car legal by today's scta rules. After 99 they put a smaller motor in the car and ran it a few times, but it has sat in the NHRA museum since then. You might want to check out their web-site at www.kugelkomponents.com. They have some articles on the car there. Or send Dynoroom ( person on this forum) a PM, as he was a big part of that project. Good luck with your build and let me know if I can help in any other way.

You really need a rule book newer than 11 years ago.

Matt, you might talk to Joe Timney at Deleware Chassis Works. He has an LSR car and does a lot of work, cages, chassis, etc on LSR cars.

My vote for Joe Timney:  He's been a major sponsor of Bonneville, the SCTA/BNI, and the 200 MPH Club - for many years.  Not only should you consider asking him for help and maybe doing work for you - because he's good at what he does, but you also should consider him because he has certainly done his part (and more) to support land speed racing with $$ and volunteer work.

And he's a nice guy, too.

Well, sorta

(had to say that for Joe, so he doesn't get his head swelled too much).

Matt,

This sentence:

"What did they update from 99 (in general) to the cage requirements?"

Made me think you are working out of an older book.

Are these tires that you already have or are looking into?  I Googled Dunlop R1 (vs DunlAp) and got nada.  Assuming they're radial construction they would be limited to their speed rating (again assuming they're speed rated at all).

Have any more details on these particular donuts?

As I remember JD ran some Dunlops along with some other roadster guys.  18's I believe.  Might be hard to get under a Firebird.

Okay guys. On page 198 of the 2010 rule book you'll find and advertisment for Rodger Kraus Racing. Go to his web site. He has the Dunlop tires in question. They are racing tires and have been run over 250 mph @ Bonneville. They were originally developed for the vintage F-1 guys. Most land speed racers shave them & run 'em
There are only 2 basic tires. Both require 18" wheels. One being 30" tall the other 32".
He also sells Goodboots if you don't want to go to Shelby.

The yellow car has the 30" tire the red one has the 32" one.

I consider the Dunlop 30's and 32's extreeeeemly inexpensive :-D. The 30's got my son a "red had" and the 32's got me one. We ran 196 with 28's, 202 with 30's, and 210 with 32's.

The 30's were well worn when I bought them and I rounded the corners. The 32's were new and I only rounded the corners and removed no tread......JD
