Title: October El Mirage
Post by: 836dstr on October 16, 2010, 12:53:33 PM
I just got back from a trip to the East coast. I heard about the storms that came through So Cal a couple of weeks ago. I didn't see anything posted about any significant rain in the El Mirage Recreational Area.

Looking at the 10 day forecast it looks like possible thunder showers Tuesday to Thursday.

Tiny, please keep us posted. Having some Indian blood in me, I plan on doing the "no-rain dance".

This is a timely post for me.  I just logged on and was going to ask a question about the weather for the October event.

Since almost all of the available weather forecast indicate rain at Adelanto this coming week maybe some of you "regulars" at El Mirage could answer a question.

Let's say it does rain at Elmo this week and puts a significant amount of water on the lake.  Best guess...would the surface be dry by enough to race on come Sunday   :?  ?

Just trying to make some plans for the race and I don't that much about how quickly the lake surface soaks up moisture.
Thanks,

Ron B

Ron,

It doesn't take much rain to turn the "Dry" lakebed into a shallow lake. Water accumulates more at the East end. It takes sun and wind to dry the lakebed out and a couple of days won't get it!

Just pray it doesn't rain this close to the Meet!

Tom

... and being it's the lowest place around, it can accumulate water greater than what falls out of the sky there.

And if it drys properly the coarse could be really nice.

Thank Tom, that makes sense....I guess we'll just have to keep our fingers crossed..

Hope to see everyone next Sunday.

This could be bad news for the Oct. meet , but we could be looking at a really good track in Nov.
And it gives me less of a chance to move up in points.
Title: Re: October El Mirage

I like the dog bowl method.  If rounded, it can approximate the actual amount of water that the lakebed gets -- adding runoff from the perimeter to the actual rainfall.

Good job, Tiny.

Jim Dincau forwarded an E-mail from the BLM stating that there was 4 feet of mud on the access road between the Highway and Visitor's Center. The worst they had ever seen.

It will be interesting to see photos.

The scheduled Lakebed cleanup for Saturday was also obviously cancelled. Not enough flat bottomed boats available.

IMO if you guys think this will help in November you might think Nov 2011. If the lake bed dries in a couple of weeks only the surface will be dry and the first car "could" cut ruts that we'll will live with for years.

As many know the lake bed has always been very fragile and needs to be hard for what we do. In the 50's when very few even went 150 there was not the problem of our high HP engines of today.

I hope the SCTA board will make the right decision when come to the use of El Mirage. We have had many years when 4 or 5 meets were all we had.............Good Luck....JD

It would seem to be easy to take 1 or 2" deep core samples at various places on the lakebed to determine moisture content and make a decision.

We definitely want to protect the lakebed.
