I just got back from a trip to the East coast. I heard about the storms that came through So Cal a couple of weeks ago. I didn't see anything posted about any significant rain in the El Mirage Recreational Area.
Looking at the 10 day forecast it looks like possible thunder showers Tuesday to Thursday.
Tiny, please keep us posted. Having some Indian blood in me, I plan on doing the "no-rain dance".

This is a timely post for me. I just logged on and was going to ask a question about the weather for the October event.
Since almost all of the available weather forecast indicate rain at Adelanto this coming week maybe some of you "regulars" at El Mirage could answer a question.
Let's say it does rain at Elmo this week and puts a significant amount of water on the lake. Best guess...would the surface be dry by enough to race on come Sunday :? ?
Just trying to make some plans for the race and I don't that much about how quickly the lake surface soaks up moisture.
Thanks,
Ron B

Ron,
It doesn't take much rain to turn the "Dry" lakebed into a shallow lake. Water accumulates more at the East end. It takes sun and wind to dry the lakebed out and a couple of days won't get it!
Just pray it doesn't rain this close to the Meet!
Tom
-
... and being it's the lowest place around, it can accumulate water greater than what falls out of the sky there.
-
And if it drys properly the coarse could be really nice.

Papi...if you clik on the link in the [other post] that Tiny has no control over you can have the updated weather for El Mirage any time you check. And its more accurate than the dog bowl :-)

Looks like the flat-bottomed cars may have an advantage.

Stan gets it..
-
Sorry if I confused peole but all I was doing is telling people on Face Book what was going on out here but I know Accurate weather knows more than some one who looks out front window & can see lakebed. It rained just a few minutes ago.
-

hey, I like the dog bowl method! ;) i guess i will put the rain tires on Old Number Seven. She likes them better than the snow studs anyway...
-
mr noonan, do have paddle tires for the BUSA????????????
-
Well the heavens up above are answering 4th thunder storm in last 2 hrs.It is raining like a tall cow peeing on a flat rock.LOL
-
This is my first year racing. What do they do?, cancel or reschedule?? Nov is only 3 weeks away but that will be a LONG 3 weeks for me!
-
2 inches of rain today.
Better check the football schedule for Sunday.
-
They cancel, and it looks like 2 inches of rain will cancel this meet. You will have to wait for the official ruling. November meet could have a really good course.
-
Yes it has rained hard out here today I would say closer to 3.5 inches accordiing to neibors weather station about 20 minutes ago it is raining now. With plenty of lightning which has knocked power out 3 times.
-
Fat lady is warming up, tomorrow she will sing.. :x
J
-
If no rain Weds, Thurs, Friday and Sat, is that enough to dry the lake bed for Sunday?
-
Not sure how much rain but we did get slammed hard during night.I will get a picture on here later.
-

FOOTBALL? I play sports that requires 2 balls to play :-D
-
This could be bad news for the Oct. meet , but we could be looking at a really good track in Nov.
And it gives me less of a chance to move up in points.
-
I like the dog bowl method. If rounded, it can approximate the actual amount of water that the lakebed gets -- adding runoff from the perimeter to the actual rainfall.
Good job, Tiny.
-
the Nov meet is in 24 days lets hope the wind blows and its 80 or 90 out on the lake bed
-

Thank you Tiny for keeping us informed.

-
Water is soaking in Don Ferguson will be here this afternoon or in morning and he will make call.Fingers and toes crosse d.
-
Thanks Tiny. Fingers, toes, eyes and wires crossed here.
-
The meet was called as well as the El Mirage clean up due to excessive mud. This is per Jim Dunn.
-
Boo. :-( Although this does buy us some time to finish the current project I'm sorta working on. :-D
-
So be it...can't beat Mother Nature..

Is Mother Nature the Fat Lady?

I have called him worse...he called me to the timing tower one time... :-o
-
Has it officially been cancelled? There's still nothing on the SCTA website.
-
Nathan is hanging on to that last flimsy thread of hope, so that in some alternate universe that sea of water can be ignored and racing will go on.
-
So far it hasn't been officially cancelled yet but it did officially rain a lot yesterday and last night. Official rain is usually folowed by an official cancellation.
-
In view of the circumstances, that probably should be "O-fish-al".
I think you might get your butt wet it you tried to run the Screwball this weekend Bill. Do your leathers also function as a wetsuit???
-
It is Canceled!!!!
-
I just got a call from Tiny, it is called and he said D3 was wading and had on water wings. Tiny said the wind is blowing the water around but no heat. Lets hope for November, it's not that far off.
It's now on the SCTA web site.
-
Officially official. Roger Roger. Clearance Clarance.
-
Really wanted to race , but I think I just saved around a grand in fuel for the trucks and race car and motel rooms and missed work.
-
Jim Dincau forwarded an E-mail from the BLM stating that there was 4 feet of mud on the access road between the Highway and Visitor's Center. The worst they had ever seen.
It will be interesting to see photos.
The scheduled Lakebed cleanup for Saturday was also obviously cancelled. Not enough flat bottomed boats available.
Tom
-
I just got the same great news, darn! :-(
Like said above posted at top of SCTA site.
See you all in November

IMO if you guys think this will help in November you might think Nov 2011. If the lake bed dries in a couple of weeks only the surface will be dry and the first car "could" cut ruts that we'll will live with for years.
As many know the lake bed has always been very fragile and needs to be hard for what we do. In the 50's when very few even went 150 there was not the problem of our high HP engines of today.
I hope the SCTA board will make the right decision when come to the use of El Mirage. We have had many years when 4 or 5 meets were all we had.............Good Luck....JD
-
I'm no expert but I think it has more to do with evaporation than absorbtion?? Its hard packed not alot of room for it to absorb?
-
It would seem to be easy to take 1 or 2" deep core samples at various places on the lakebed to determine moisture content and make a decision.
We definitely want to protect the lakebed.
Tom

Let's hope BLM uses prudence and keeps the great, unwashed, non Landspeed racing public off long enough.
I know it's the property of all, but some of the OTHERS are LIBERALS! (Woops, no politics).
-
Holy Schmoly, that's a lot of water! :-o
Any updates?
-
need a new class for ski boarders pulled by non-crashing drones.......
by age group would be fine but by intoxication level would be ever more entertaining.
sorry sick and twisted with sw today, carry on..........
