Okay -- here it is -- the first and best and only (!) thread for this year's World of Speed.
First of all -- it's about 3PM on Tuesday, inspection day, and I got shanghaied into dsoing some inspecting -- and that's why this first update is tardy. Good enough excuse?
Photos taken from the inspection area:

And that's it for now. Gotta take our bike to the fuel truck -- Rick is closing in 45 minutes and we're rarin' to go racing in the morning. I'll get some more photos for you later.
-
Great stuff Jon, thanks so much for the time you put in for those of us that are "salt deprived"
-
Jon,
Wow! What fun to see those pics fresh from the salt. Those of us stuck in the East working are drooling. I better get my napkin and then back to work again (not at the salt mine though) so I can go to Maxton in 11 days.
Thanks again.
-
I see jeff bailey's new bike sitting there in tech. that thing should be a monster!!!
-
Those are some pretty cool vehicles. But... A chopper?? Okaaaaay
Don
-
But hey, the chopper team all has matching shirts. And some of them even have the sleeves cut off!!!!
-
Can somebody tell me more about the Blue car 313? What is it? That thing looks so cool!!!!!
-
313 is a Datsun B210 comp coupe built by Gene and Tom Burkland. Very fast back then. Still a good looking car
-
Jon thanks, your off to a great start with some great pictures. We really enjoy them. Jon If you get close to the 2909 high boy roadster tell Butch, Rick said his car looks great on the salt. That will blow his mind trying to figure that out.
Salt Sick Rick
-
Datsun B210 -- don't you recognize it?
-
Fantastic job,
Thanks.
-
A Datsun B210??? Yes sure :-P
Wht a gorgeous car and it does not suprise me to hear the Burkklands were involved in it.
-
Went 300 when they had it.
-
What was the number then (if different) in order to look it up on Sum's site?
Mike
-
Google gene burkland and scroll down to Ugo 411 story on the Burklands, Gene got in the 200 club with a 294 record.
-
Dang -- I'll try again. No signal when I sent a post just now.
First of all, Rex's Datsun runs in XF/BFCC. He says it's his way of "burning expensive fuel to break really expensive parts". If you can't see in the photos -- I'll get better ones tomorrow. Take a look at the blower -- good size, yup.
Let's see -- which bike is Jeff Bailey's? I can find it and maybe get more photos.
About the yellow chopper -- last year the team was here and the bike ran a 124. There's a limiter in the electronics that stops the fun at 5,500 rpm -- about 124. Said limiter is gone this year -- they're hoping to get into the 130 Club. Nice ink on most of the team, too. And they've got a little ankle-biter-size kid that must be on about 50% -- geez, to have the energy he's got.
Finally - Nancy's bike is teched and fueled and we're looking forward to her making a run tomorrow. Just one oughta be enough -- someplace north of 205 is all we want. 210 would be nice -- se she has a few in the bank. But one run, then to impound. Yeah, like that's all it takes.
See you later -- we're going to a volunteer worker party now.
-
Jeffs bike is the beautiful blue Buell under the tech canopy in the last pic.

Thanks, Glen!

Sum only has the streamliner on his site.
Mike
-
Mike, your welcome. I find tons of info on google. Lots of good reading there.
-
Ah, THAT Buell. I look forward to seeing it run. Nicely put together, for sure. I'll see if I can get some other pictures.
Nice guys, too -- one of the other inspectors noticed the front sprocket wasn't covered (although it was pretty well out of harm's way). The team went to the pit and took a cover off another bike and put it on the Buell within a few minutes - without being told they HAD to do it. Sure is nice when racers work to make things as safe as they can.
-
Waiting for that party -- so ---
The Vesco 444 'liner is here, and so is Skip Higginbotham's long-skinny streamliner. Unh, Mark DeLuca and his girlfriend Laura (did I get that right, Mark?) are here -- with Mark hoping for a 250 on the Guppy Forstall all-motor bike. Stout goal, hey?
I saw the 1411 A.S.S. streamliner, didn't I, and the 667 Firecracker of Dan and Kris Wright. You probably noticed Mayf's Sunbean in one of the photos, and Steve Struck is here with the Jack Rogers Realty 757 Camaro. The 743 Studebaker (used to be the Guam Bomb) went through the line, and there's the 59 Volk Family roadster and Joe Ledford's #55 roadster -- with a "B" motor this time. Un, let's see -- Roy Creel and the reliable #53 car, and Sam Dakin's turbo Harley slick-looking bike.
That's my walk down memory lane for now. Going to the Community Center for that picnic. I'll get you some results tomorrow. And more photos, too.
-
294 record was with young Tom driving, Iron Chrysler for power. I believe Gene used the Stude to get into the 200 club. The Datsun design is good for well over 300mph just needs more hp.
-
Have you seen Ray (Therat)? He might be making his rookie run in a white pickup with a camper.
-
I can confirm that this is the plan. We got the truck back together and running about 10 pm. Then I went home, showered, backed and split for that white dyno thing. I have my brain bucket and my SFI firesuit (hopelessly out-dated, but otta work for 130.)
Here are some photos that I grabbed as we were thrashing; My witness protection officer said it'd be ok with the shades on along with the with the Valvoline mechanic's cap....at least that's what I think it is.
The next photo is of the K&N snorkel that was delivered via UBT (Ugly Brown Truck) and, when compared with the hassle with the thermostat, seems to be working fine.
Finally we picked up a coupla sponsors for the Fox Paws racing team. The nut/bolt/fasteners place is a real lifesaver. They stay open an hour or 90 minutes longer than any other butts and nolts supply house I'm familiar with.
http://www.nutboltanchor.com/Default.asp (http://www.nutboltanchor.com/Default.asp)
I'm off for bed...hell, I gotta get up in a few hours.
G'nite,
-
Jon, thanks for filling in for me while Jim and I were thrashing. We probably have a lot more to do, but at least I'm in Wendover. C ya in the ayem.
-
Glad to see the # 774 is there ... and the first pic ! I'll be waiting to hear / read any info on them.
-
isnt the 774 roadster 4 wheel drive? so what time only right?
-
We're racing! First few runs -- the 1963 Avanti, followed by the Salt Cat Jag/Buick -- who qualified with a 178 on a 130-something record. Jon Minnono just ran his giant S&S 1161 bike -- but turned out at about the 2 mile.
We're in line for the long line -- Nancy's all suited up and ready to race.
I'm going to shut this off for a few minutes -- people walking up to talk left and right. I'll be back . . .
-
The MacKichan & Schultz 136 'liner is a few vehicles in front of us, and right behind him is the Cohn-Juciewicz Monza.
I tell ya what -- I'm going to let this go for a while, like I thought I would last post.
Next car -- #631 Rex Svoboda running on a 305 record. Hmm -- what happened to the 313 number? I'm just telling you what the announcers said. Pulled out at the 1 3/4.
Next is bike 9392. The announcer is telling us the first name of the rider/driver -- something new. Ah, this is Jeff Bailey on the Buell, running a B licensing pass.
4731 DA right now, nil wind, 62F, 34% humidity.
Back to Jeff -- 162" motor -- he's away. Sounds nice at the 1 1/2, still pulling strong. 169.406 in the quarter, 171.970 mile, shut off at the 3. Qualifies for the record -- on a license pass, too.
I'm outa here for a while.
-
Glad to hear Minono is back after his fire last year!!
-
keep an eye out for the 5656 ABFALT thunderbird, it could be the fastest doorslammer at the meet.
-
We're about to start running again -- a car locked up the rear end about the five mile - and dug a couple of trenches down to dirt (so goes the word on the radio). We've been on hold for the last half hour.
The Joint Venture is next on the long course -- hope he'll wheel-pack the divots down there.
-
Here's where we are -- a half hour or whatever later. Robbie Cohn spun the little Monza, so that took a while to get things going again, then Ryan Osty coudln't start one bike -- so pulled the other one out opf the trailer, but they didn't have air for the shifter so he left the line planning to foot shift, but pulled off after a few hundred yards -- had it into second but no more.
So all of a sudden it was Nancy's turn. She left just fine, ran 188 in the quarter -- then slowed to a 180 in the first mile, then turned off 'cause the engine wasn't making power and wasn't sounding happy. And now we're back in the pit taking all 14 side panels off the bike (dang production rules that mean you've gotta run stock factory bodywork) to see what the heck is going on in there. No further information yet -- but dang, that 188 in the quarter was fine. Let's hope it's simple and we can get her back on the course soon.
Other than that -- the 136 Mackichan and Schulz (I think it's spelled right now) ran a 299 in the last mile -- good, but needed in the low 300 for the trip to impound. Still, first run of the meet and that good -- there's more to come there, I betcha.
Nobody's running right now -- nothing to report there. I'll be back in a while. Might wander the pits while Todd and Josh thrash on the bike. Oh, speaking of a walk -- I see the #1122 Spirit of Rett a few pits down. I think they're running at the shootout next week -- maybe here for some tune up. Will they get past 400 again? Stay tuned. The car is still in the it - no more information.
Okay -- click to post. I'll be back.
-
Jon,Thanks for the updates.
-
Joe Ledford just ran a 212 on a 223 record. He's pitted next to us -- I'll learn what's left for him to do. Just saw one heck of a Cadillac limo/hearse/custom/don't know what to call it. I'll make sure to get a photo for you.
Ye Olde Dragon Highway Hauler is here, still in the pit. I didn't get a speed for the Joint Venture's run.
Sure are lots of course holds -- although the 150 Club cars might be why I'm thinking that -- most of 'em are relatively quiet.
-
Jack Broomall is in impound after running a 202.3 mph in M/G 1650 (On Bill Warner's 195 V-Max record). Jack's first time on a tractor (aka big inch Busa). Nice riding Jack  Good Luck tomorrow. LSL
-
I just got online. I'm at the long/short course timing slip trailer, unloading the camera. photos soon.

Congrats to Jack..half way to a Hat...
Spoke with Robbie Cohn, he spun his Monza at over 240 mph and will just run it to the three tomorrow as he ran 232 to the three today on a 217 record..
Any other bike speeds? ?

Has anyone seen Max and the Vincent Streamliner?

Nancy and I just got back from a strollthrough impound. I got a few photos -- but not Jack and not Billy Shoemaker's bike, although I saw him putting the tarp on it.
Cars in impound -- three of 'em. George Fields, running half of his motor, went 297 on his old 268. Well, he says he did the run on three and a half cylinders. For sure there was no plumbing on one side of the engine.

The Salt Cat is in there, too -- 171 on a 131 -- is that what he said?
And Robbie Cohn, who spun it in the middle mile -- after running 240.7 in the first mile. Like John said (above) -- Robbie will run it to the three and switch off tomorrow.
Nobody else right now. It's a mellow slow time here now, with a few vehicles running. Debbie Dross is on the way to ride Dean Sabatinelli's naked blown 1000 Kawi, and somebody (couldn't see who it was) just shouted hello as they were trailering their Hayabusa to the line. Yeah, that'll be easy enough to figure out -- there can't be many of them here, right?
We got a few photos, and I'll load them in a minute or two. The electric liner bike is in inspection right now -- got some photos. And Max Lambky's bike is here someplace. We took a quick ride through the pits and didn't find it -- must be in line. If we go to the line there'll be a break in the updates --let me get this stuff done before we go. I'll post if there's any big news.
Here are the shots I just took:

I've got more, but will load them later on -- it's a bitch trying to see through the glare here on the salt, although right now it's beautiful weather -- light clouds, gentle breeze from right to left (of the course), and temps feel about 75F.
-
Billy Shoemaker in impound with a 211 mi one, 215.8 mi two on the 209mph 1350 M/BF record. Nice job Billy! :-D
-
Finally, I found a place to settle down and edit a few fotos and post 'em.
In this one, first foto shows the tech inspection line at about 7:30 ayem.
Wes Potter is gonna take another bite outta that pipe and tell me if it's any good.
Drivers' meeting as it began...I was shooting from the roof of the Burb.
Monte Widdison and our flag highlighted as info is presented to the drivers.
more to come.
oops...maybe I otta add the fotos.

Congrats..Picture of his bike please...
Good luck Debbie..

The speeds now, even for bikes, are a lot better than we could get at BUB 3 weeks ago. Has the salt improved since then? Or was I just incompetent? Maybe both! Can anyone compare the salt conditions now vs BUB?
Don
-
..Don, i believe it would have to be the superior
scta approved tires...:)
i had heard Dean S. ran 198 naked...perhaps it was Deb on Deans bike..??
Joe :)
-
Some folks have reported the salt is a bigt slick, but Nancy says she wasn't having any issues at all during her run. Dean's bike looked like it had run in wet salt. Robbie Cohn said he spun almost instantly, and the next run was by Lee Sicilio who spun in the same place.
Billy's bike is under the tarp - I'll wait for tomorrow for a photo for you, John.
No, Dean made that run this morning -- Deb hasn't yet run. She's in line now -- we expect another hour or so before she's on the race course.
-
Yes it must be the tires!!! :-P
-
Jon, are they running on the BNI courses?? or a different area???
Just wondering.
-
Glen, the course being used is the Speedweek long course (the one closest to the mountains). The 130 Club is running next over -- the combo course from SW.
-
..good to see the bikes doing well...
-
Max and the liner crew spent all day so far dialing in the overhauled clutch, plus fixing an oil leak. We are all done, just now putting the body work on to go get in line.
-
Has anyone seen Max and the Vincent Streamliner?
Yep. Everyone except Hartmut seems to be here. They were gonna start it up but it didn't wanna crank...Max decided they'd pull the plugs and see if it would turn over...then I had to split to check other stuff. I'll check in later and update things.
-
CANNON BALLS!!! DID YOU KNOW THIS?
It was necessary to keep a good supply of cannon balls near the cannon on old war ships. But how to prevent them from rolling about the deck was the problem. The storage method devised was to stack them as a square based pyramid, with one ball on top, resting on four, resting on nine, which rested on sixteen.
Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem -- how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding/rolling from under the others.
The solution was a metal plate with 16 round indentations, called, for reasons unknown, a Monkey. But if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make them of brass - hence, Brass Monkeys.
Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled.
Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannon balls would come right off the monkey.
Thus, it was quite literally, cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.
I thought I would send this fabulous bit of historical knowledge to you guys that have nothing better to do than hit refresh all day...
Kent
-
Kent,
Have you been listening to the beastie boys?
John
-
Anyone hear how fast that Electric bike went or maybe it's not running as it looks unfinished?
J
-
Congrats Billy 1/2 way there... shorter is sometimes better
Go DEBBIE!!
Everyone have fun be safe and go Fast! Then Post!!! hehe Please :-D
-
crap the reporting is to slow for me..... im leaving, driving up to Utah right now....
kent
-
I guess I otta post something to keep the brass monkeys away.
I think this Cutlass is running in Production Supercharged...but I can't tell. Light's horrible where I'm editing these.
The 46 Ford runs a Chevy big block with a 14-71 lower and 3 AFB carbs...I think that's what he told me...I know it was 3 carbs and a 14-71.
Then the Amo-Steele liner gets dressed and...
...goes for a ride. Looked and sounded REAL good.
-
ha kent swing by Riverside and pick me up would you
-
where's that Midget?..........................
-
Kent .... great stuff ... you almost had me ... Joe
-
Kent .... great stuff ... you almost had me ... Joe
I thought for sure there was going to be a sidecar joke in there somewhere... But, they don't usually use brass monkeys.
-
Things must be slow at Kent's shop. :-D
-
Has anyone except Kent seen a "Brass Monkey"?
-
no comment
-
Kent, take a cool drink and relax. The electric liner is back in the pits for a few upgrades to minor little points -- and then, according to the inspector, once those are done, the bike will be allowed to make a limited-speed pass or two before starting licensing passes. I think that's what I was told. Basically -- the 'liner is pretty close to okay, but some things needed a bit of touching-up.
Other stuff -- we've got long waiting lines at this event. I know some folks have been in line for four hours and more -- so that's one reason I haven't given much in the way of updates. I'll get the next batch of photos up later on.
Robbie Cohn hurt a tire in that spin earlier today -- is on the 1610 AM radio looking for a replacement. Maybe someone will see this note and help out.
Max Lambky's bike is ready to run -- but Max said he'd be waiting for less wind. It's still brisk -- maybe 5-8 mph cross track.

Charles Nearburg in the 1122 Spirit of Rett just ran a 320 or so. He's here for some test and tune time new bodywork. Will be running at the Shootout next week.
Next up is Debbie Dross on the 1440 Sabatinelli bike. Let's see what she can do on the 208 record -- Dean's, I think. She's off the line. 1000 cc blown naked Kawasaki.
Quarter speed is 135.884 , slowing at the three mile.
No idea how much longer we'll be running tonight -- it's nearly quitting time (according to the written signs - we'll see what Jim Burkdoll says now).
-
Wow! Brass Monkey History,Vescos 444 liner,Ray the Rats Madian Run and of coarse my Dads Vincent Streamliner.I wish I could have made the trip
-
Chris was just here with Kate -- and tells us the Midget should be ready to run in the morning. That what you wanted to know?
-
The Bill Burke Avanti just ran -- running crappy, sorry to report. No speeds worth reporting.
-
Ok. Runnin around like a chicken without a head, I managed to get a few fotos.
First, is "our" race truck.
Then there's the Salt Cat Jag in impound with what they're calling a front porch, but I insist it's an air dammit.
Then I ran into some unsavory characters: Dickie Milne, Marlo Treit and Korey Bligh. They tell me they're just slumming, but I think they got something up their sleeve. If ya don't know 'em, go here:
http://target550.com (http://target550.com)
And then there's the JAZ Sidewinder liner...the crew tell me that they have a lotta problems fixed and it otta really work.
Now I gotta put on my racer/crew/whatever hat and get the pit area workin for the race truck.

Mark DeLuca qualified at 230 in APS/G 2000 with the Guppy. Record is 192. Working his way up as the bike has numerous changes this year. Two in Warnerville aka Happyland. LSL

fantastic Larry, you guys, Forstall, Knecum, Deluca and the rest
of the team have sooo set the standard for NA bikes...!!!!
Joe :)

Way to go Mark and Larry! Success in the AM :-D

Nancy and I were on the way out when Mark ran. I wondered who it was -- didn't recognise the bike from our distance. Then, at the truckstop cafe, we heard someone had just put about 40 mph on a record. Now we know the story. Congratulations, and best wishes for the return run in the morning (Mark and Jack, too).
I'm going to see if there are any photos worth posting tonight. Back in a few minutes.

Here's a batch of photos from the staging line earlier this afternoon.
We'll start with the Burkdoll family's new MMP:

Skip Higginbotham's liner, from the rear. Gary Allen drove it but had a bad run -- turned out to the inside about the two mile. No reports on why -- but we saw the car being towed back into the pit, on the dolly, as we were leaving. No big dents or smudges -- and it was a shakedown run, Skip and Gary had said.

That's it for tonight, ladies and germs. We're having breakfast with Bob Clancy -- the web elf for this site, who, with his son Trev, rode into town this afternoon. They'll spend a few days looking at the goings-on of WoS before heading out for further adventures. And because of that date -- I won't be on the site 'til maybe 9 or so in the morning. Fair warning. . .

Mark & his lady Laura getting ready to make history. 252.419 MPH all motor.
A team effort with Steve Knecum the man who makes it happen. The engine has not been out of the bike in two years but I think the rust is gone from the valve seats.lol. The starter froze on the dyno last week so Steve is using the great white dyno today. It is for just such moments that we live, the feeling is worth the effort. Big congrats to Jack Broomall, new 2-club member at 201 naked. What a morning, Thank You all. Larry

Many thanks to Nick for his welding assistance on Max's sidecar.

Ah, well, it's not a "front of the line" thing -- just some slow starting -- and lots of chatting.
So -- thanks everyone for the reports and news. John Rank is next on line in the Salty Dog modified roadster. Switched off at about the three with a 245 mph speed.
In the meantime, Dean is in impound, has been reported, putting a new tire on the rear. The first one got pretty well shredded during his run that put him in impound. He's got spares with him. No, I don't know what brand or type tire he hurt.
I see the Vesco liner in the pit. I know it ran earlier -- didn't hear speeds. Nobody at the line had a radio and the speakers aren't placed near enough.
I'm going to read through the posts again, see what the questions are, and then get some answers and maybe some speeds and post 'em. See you in a little while.
-
C/GL running on a 273.4 record now. It's the Ravenna Garage Racing car. Off the line, sounding decent. No speeds -- don't know what happened. Unh, now I'm hearing that the driver is out of the car and is okay. Didn't hear a report on why he turned out/quit the run.
Remember they're running one course -- short course/one fifty club on the left at the start, long course on the right side.
I'll post and get back to you in a minute.
-
Buy Charlie a beer.......Ravenna Garage lakester.
He attends the B'ville NW Reunion.
MODIFICATION:
If he blew it up I imagine he's ready to pack it in for the meet.
Generally he doesn't make a class change down there.

I guess he hurt the motor big time -- they're down for a while doing a full-course sweep. All's about done with that, though.
750 cc Kawasaki running now on the 130 Club course. As a refresher -- the 130 Club is run like this -- you get five passes, and the goal is to run a 130-139.999 in the one-mile long course. First pass is a "calibrate your speedo" run, then you go try to do that 130+ speed. Go over 139.999 and you're done -- that's why you get the calibrating run.
Ray S. Therat is on his way there pretty quick. He asked me to tell you all. His partner, Jim/Texican, is out of commission for a while with self-induced food poisoning, I hear, so it's all up to Ray for now. He left here with a handful of landracing.com stickers to apply to the race truck, then to remove the blocker plates from the muffler, then to go run it on the course. Best wishes were sent along with him -- followed by the ever-present last words -- "Be careful out there on the race course".
-
Hmm. "self-induced food poisoning".
Is that where you take the potato salad out and say, "Well, it's not quite aged enough. I'll wait three or four hours and see if it tastes better."
-
He reheated his Mexican dinner on the exhaust manifold.
Forgot it and remembered it about bedtime. Had it for a snack
with the potato salad.
Ray Therat didn't have time to eat, so he is the driver.
I learned him all I could over the fone, so he has now lost his virtue to the Salt.

Ray's done with driving for a while -- has to go to town to get a cable for the cxomputer, but he gave me this information before he left on the trip:
He made two passes down the 130 /Club course. The first one was a 91 mph calibration run, and he was satisfied. Then -- time to give 'er -- and he railed on it and zoomed through the timed stretch -- at 95.
Hunh? 95? Unh, Ray, I thought ----
He explained that there's evidently a wall of air or something out there -- that holds the truck back from doing much more than that. Hey, I've heard something about air resistance, right? Whatever -- 95 (although he said he saw a 102 on his GPS at one point).
Whatever, once he's back on the site I'll let him defend his own honor. (Umm, "she offered her honor, and he honored her offer, and all night long he was on her and off her" (best read out loud, you know).
In other information, Gary Allen just drove the Skip Higginbotham 'liner to a 304 mph pass. And Nancy and I just got back from Dan Warner's hangout at the gateway to heaven (a/k/a Impound), where we got the numbers for the qualifiers so far today -- and the data on the records certified earlier today. I'll lick this to post and then enter all of the data.
-
Here's the list of the records certified this morning, the first day of record return runs for World of Speed 2010.
Car 31 -- the Burkdoll/Hawley I/MMP 90.652 down run, 95.687 return run, 93.169 new record.
That's the "format" I'll use for all of the following data.

396 Utah Valley Univ. AA/CBGC 131.876 137.814 134.845

Car: Salt Cat XXO/BGCC 171.038 179.360 175.449
Those, my friends, are all of the vehicles that qualified yesterday and backed up their records today. Congratulations to all of the racers and their teams.
Now -- here's the list of who's in impound as of about 1.45PM today:
Bike 1440 Dean Sabatinelli M-BG 1000 217.722
Bike 3379 Kim Krebs / Greg Waters, Kim up APS/BG 750 220.213* Kim qualified in two or three of the miles -- I've listed only her fastest, but she hasn't yet decided which to run on tomorrow.
Bike 6261 Kamphius Racing A PS P BF 750 95.519
Car 7770 Victory Motorsports F/GT 172.275
That's the story direct from Dan's binders -- I think it's all correct. I'll be hanging around the pits for a while again.
-
Thanks for the updates, any news on Nancy, the lectrick bike, Cohn..? Pictures of Debbie, Dean, Bill, and Bill Shoemakers bike..?
What about Kim on the 750..did she get a hat?
Thanks for the last update..looks like she and others are sitting in the best place..

Nancy is out for the season. The motor hurt a valve, we think -- and since the whole head is all new work -- we'll wait for the off season to go through and see why it happened. The valves are non-stock size and so on -- so repairing out here would be a bugger. Better to give it up. Think of it this way, though -- she was ready to quit after this season, but now will most likely be back for more next year, budget permitting.
The electric bike ran earlier today but didn't do much of anything -- was running with a 125 sticker, didn't hurt, didn't break, just had a plain run. They then went back to inspection for the required visit. Eva (the rider) pushed the button to depoly the air-actuated outriggers -- but the pressure in the system was low so the bike fell over on the side. Not a good thing to do with the inspector watching!
Cohn's car is in the pits -- didn't run the return runs this morning because of the tire problem. I'll go ask Rob and Ron for an update to their story.
Debbie Dross didn't feel comfy riding the Sabat. bike -- so she's done, but Dean did fine. Qualified with that 217 today but shredded a tire. The bike is in impouond now, all covered with the tarp, and with a new rear tire mounted.
All of the bikes in impound are either tarped or in the trailer now -- so I don't have any photos of them. When you ask about "Bill" -- which Bil do you mean" Warner? He's working with Team Fkawi, as you probably know, and I just got shanghaied into doing some 150 Club bike inspecting. The rules call for two inspectors -- so Bill got volunteered to do some second checks. That's it -- he's now back to relaxing, I expect, with Fkawi.
Kim Krebs -- see my post, above. If she can back it up she'll get the hat, I think -- didn't look it up, but I gotta think that a 220 (Interruption here -- Greg just walked up with further details) will be enough. Here's what Greg just said: There is a 215 minimum for the hat in the class -- put up there soon after he got his red hat with a 212 a few years back. So Kim has qualified in a couple of the miles, and the 220 in the last mile - was followed by a 227 exit speed. The data logger showed quite a bit less the 100% throttle, at that -- more is there when she wants/needs it.
Other stuff -- Jesse's Truck Shop F/DS is on the course now. The record is a 199.019, and the car is now going 110 in the first mile and slowing as he goes by at the three. 109 in the first mile, and that's it.

Not to criticize Robby or Ron, but why would anyone tow all the way to the salt with one set of wheels and tires? And to lose a record run really hurts.
Hopefully they find one and get the chance to nail it.

Very quick update...
Yes, I made my first 2 passes on the salt. About 90 mph and that was all she wrote. Nothing more.
But. While I was in town, 3 itinerant salt flats veterans happened to show up looking for work.
First foto. Alli I can say is that I didn't shoot it cuz I was inside the brain bucket.
2nd foto. Apprentice photographer did much better in the launch.
last foto.
Jim, Dickie Milne and Marlo Treit. Korey Bligh is inside the shell. Talk about expertise!!! And appreciated!
They're tryin some other things while I type.

They have two new tires coming in tomorrow and will make a few passes trying for the record...
Robbie said that he looked at the in car video and he spun the car before the lights and still went through at 240+ spinning.. :-o

Well, those itinerant guys knew what they were talkin about. I made another run (it's really strange to be in the position of "driver" and be chauffeured by Marlo Treit..and hear "we need the driver now.") and with the aero help we got, I ran MUCH better until the top speed governor kicked in at 100 mph. I drove the last .3 mile on the governor. Now we gotta find out how to disable that.
In the meantime, I'll edit some fotos and post 'em.
I'm havin the frikkin time of my life. :) :) :)

Slim and Ray, Thanks for keeping us informed and the pictures. :-) Nancy & Slim, hang in there, hope the budget allows another run at it next year!
We're heading out Sunday for the Shootout, looks like the weather will be good, Hope for a tight course.

I'm chilled, just looking at yesterdays run list and see a lot of good cars entered and the runs they made. Like all others we wonder if they are broke or not, Vesco still has a vibration, Tanis made a short run as well as a couple of others. I know how hard it is to announce and for people to hear the times. You are right we are spoiled. Jon W., Jon A. & the rat , Debbie and others are doing their best. I might have to get a job so I can just go to all of the meets next year.
-
If you can get me a job, I can guarantee that you could also get a job just fixing the mistakes I make.
Seems good for both of us. Doris and Carol would second the idea.
Think of what it would be like for them to have peace and silence in the house while we were gone.
I have contemplated assigning my SSI checks to Doris. With no income, I could apply for welfare and use the
debit cards they supply to stay at the casino, eat at the casino and ride the casino shuttle to the event.
Is there any fallacy in that scenario?
Ray, Google that arrangement and see if it will work.

I just replaced the rear tires and wheels on my Vega. By the time I had bought new wheels, had new Moon discs attached, paid UPS, powder coated, bought new tires and tubes. Mounted and balanced I was in over a grand. At that rate and with a zero failure rate over 32 years it would be hard to justify spares. Of course high rollers can do what they want.
-
I've fallen WAY short of my intents to keep making updates with fotos. As soon as I can get this Texican into the Burb and back to Wendover, then I'll attach myself to the computer via umbilical cord and post some stuff. I appreciate everyone's patience as I made my first ever runs on the salt. I'll treasure the memory of leaving the line and just rowing thru the gears and only hearing the exhaust and the breathing in my helmet. I've fulfilled a dream today. Again, thanks for your patience.

Rich, I am not a high roller, but it costs me about $2500 a trip, and I would be suicidal if it took me two or three days to get a tire.......... and I don't think the SCTA appreciates holding up the race while someone tries to borrow a tire in the pits to get yours or my car off the race course.
I just don't feel I can afford to go without at least the spare tires. Bob
-
Ray congrats on your first run on the salt. I guess that makes you a new newby.
Rick  :-D :-o

Bob, SCTA has a four wheel tow dolly we use to move car with a tire down or a locked up rear end. It's compact and is easy to put under a car to move it. We are looking into a low profile hyd. jack for low vehicles to go with it.we used it at speed week.
-
Fantastic Ray :-) :-) :-) :-) Even though I really appreciate your photos and updates I hope to do what you did today. Memories like this will be remembered forever. Glad you had and took the opportunity to run the Salt. Absolutely no excuse needed. Oh, Ray. If you show up with just your racin' stuff, no cameras and no computer, we'll understand.

Really appreciate the updates you guys. Sure wish I could be there but being self funded like most of us I am in the process of rounding up parts to replace the engine I destroyed at Speedweek. The updates are appreciated more than you could know. I can remember back when you had to wait for a magazine report to come out in the January issue! Thanks again. Sorry I couldn't be there.

Dick, do you recognize that firesuit jacket? I told ya I'd use it. It just took a little longer than I thought. Thanks, man. I really thought about ya when I put it on today.

I've been told in no uncertain terms by someone I really respect as a salt flats veteran to get my butt to bed. But I sed I'd post a few fotos, so I'm gonna do that before I crash...but not as many as I anticipated.
I'll be back in photographer mode in the ayem tomorrow for record returns.
Here are a few I shot of today's returns. No commentary...or very little.
The chute line on the 136 streamliner is a stability chute...not a speed reducing device...or so it was stated on the FM radio.

Slim and Nancy - Wow, I am so sorry to hear about your motor.
I was really looking forward to us running together at WF again.
If there is anything I can do on my end, please let me know.
On the bike running over 250 NA, that is just awesome.
Slim, is that based on a busa motor??
Slim, Ray and Jon, thanks for the great updates. Wish I was there.....

So far 3 runs for me and they all have been good and getting better. I am in A-PG 3000, not 2000. hope they have it right!
Ran 175.9 to qualify on my own new record this afternoon. There's lots more in the bike...i just need to figure it out.

Congrats Jeff. Holy crap, 3000??? :-o
That's a whole lotta motor.
Go get 'em

Did you miss any shifts?
What does the data acquisition show?
Has Jim purged the food poisoning?
FREUD
I didn't miss a shift (I'd never driven that truck before today), the data acq info was sent off by carrier pigeon and the food poisoning has been duly cared for. I'll quote Jim,"When I talked to my daughter and she said she'd been praying for me, I began to feel better." I can't add any editorial comment to that...I'll just leave it as it is. I hope the pigeons find their way, tho.

Last batch.
That Treit fella really seems to get around.
I've always loved Stude Hawks. Just a personal thing, I guess.
Since I have a hard time taking things seriously (myself as well, I hope) I couldn't help if the "Remove before flight" banner was attached to the driver.....
And finally...well, I don't explain 'em, I just shoot 'em.

Bob
Bob,
I am not aware of how many records you have set with one car however I am not aware of anyone that has set more records over 195 with the same car than the Cohns, they now have even faster records than some blown classes
Robbie is an inspiration to many of us that know him well and he has tires coming tomorrow.
Do you see that he held up the racing while his car was towed or are you at home like the rest of us..? As far as I know they realized the tire was damaged after getting it to impound so I don't think the SCTA racers or SCTA had to wait while he was fetching a tire from the pits..if he borrowed a tire I am sure he would have made the return run today as any other racer would have offered their tire to him however he runs a rather unique size and ordered two new ones to arrive tomorrow.
John
PS. They are a rather small funded team and have done the most with the less.

Thanks, all, for the great coverage.

I can't think about Ronnie Cohn without seeing him driving slowley along, hand out the window, feeling the wire for breaks. Besides having a very fast Monza there are few who have done as much so that I can go play. Thanks Ron and everybody else.
-
why is there so many other cars at world of speed that dont run at an SCTA event? is it a tech thing or just the classes? maybe there are rooms at the hotels?

I have been wondering the same thing.
-
I believe a lot of people really enjoy the atmosphere of the WOS. Prior to running the event in 08' I heard lots of people talking about how much of a laid back relaxed event it is, I know I enjoyed WOS in 08 and would go again.
Scott
-
yes the World Finals are that way too, cool temps and less people but faster cars and bikes too.
-
The WOS event is not nearly as crazy as Speedweek. It has the feel of Elmo to me, shorter lines, a huge variety of vehicles, and salt.
That's a winning combination.
Huge kudos to the USFRA - they do it right and I'm proud to be a member.
-
Debbie just wrote on facebook that Dean backed up his record with a 213 for a new record of 215 on his M/BG-1000.
Lynda
-
John, I am sorry if you misconstrued anything I said as being negative about Robbie or Ron. I was only speaking of my own concerns about not only being unable to race, but possibly incuring the wrath of my fellow racers if I was the reason for a holdup on the course.
I was only citing them as the victims of bad luck, not as problem causers.
As I stated, I have nothing but admiration for Robbie and Ron.
Bob
-
Bob,
No worries  I just was asking if they held up the racing after the spin as I believe they did not know the tire was hurt until after towing to Warnerville..
Two 500.00 dollar tires should arrive today and hopefully they have another chance at the record, that little car with the HP from Bob J. has set a ton of records and it's great to see Robbie out there and not too mention what his father has done for the SCTA as well..99.9% of the racers have no idea :-o
Hope for great salt, safe racing and good coverage..

You're right in not leaving Bob Jucewic out of the equation.

Okay, let the racing begin............. Someone please wake up SSS and Ray. I gotta leave for the airport in a hour and don't have a laptop so its going to be a long day without info...........
It's nice that the USFRA is posting results, just wish it was faster.
Good luck to everyone today.................. Bob

Wow! yesterdays results are posted on the USFRA site. Once again I spoke before I checked..Oops.

I'm awake, I'm up and at the staging line with the bike team we inherited yesterday. But before that story --
Return runs are over now and the vehicles are just getting into impound. I don't have the speeds yet, but I know a few things.
Dean Sabatinelli backed up his run with a 217 -- and didn't hurt a tire. Kim Krebs did not back up hers of yesterday -- ran about 200 on the nose, and even against yesterday's fast run -- the average was about 210 and she needed a 212. The Salt Cat Jaguar is back in impound, and Jack Rogers in the old Doll-Fox-Christopherson Camaro is there, too, having backed up his 251 from yesterday with a 248 or so. I'll get those numbers corrected later -- we were chatting in the truck as qwe drove onto the salt and I didn't write down the numbers.
The little 50 cc bike is back in impound. I didn't see any other bikes there. Not much of anyone, I'm sorry to say.
I'll post and then go on with the rest of the story.
-
Yesterday we were hanging around the pit, being all morose and bummed with the broken motor. Then Dan Warner arrived with a couple of racers in his truck. They rode here from So Cal on their bikes -- one of which is an S1000 BMW. They wanted to run the Bimmer -- but didn't have legal leathers, so Dan thought maybe we could hook them up with a suit. Well, now we're crewing for the couple.
He got the bike through inspection okay, but with a 200 MPH max. sticker on it for the first run. He's in production 1000 cc class, which record is about 194 1/2. Andy, the rider, made his one run last night -- turned a 194.0 or so. Decent for right off the street. The bike, by the way, is the dealership's demo unit -- has 4500 miles on it.
So -- this morning we took the bike back to Matt, the bike inspector, showed him the timing slip, got the 200MPH speed limit sticker removed, and now we're back in line. He'll run the long course this time and see what it'll do, hey?
In other news, we're right behind Skip and Gary in Skip's B/BGS 'liner, and Bob Ragsdale's Stude is up in front of us, too. The course is held -- a racer lost a muffler on the track (maybe) and they're searching for it.
Humidity 30%, wind zero, DA is 4,813 feet, temp. is 62. Darn, nice weather, hunh?
The Joint Venture made a run earlier -- switched off about the 1 1/2 -- don't know why yet. Ye Olde Dragon just ran - and it was the next run or two after that that the muffler went missing.
Hunh? A muffler on a racer vehicle? I wonder if the announcer got that bit of data correct. . .
Click to post - will be back.
-
Next on the line is #3182 -- Mark DeLuca on the Forstall-Knecum-DeLuca bike. He's going down the course.
Quarter mile speed: 248.235 first mile 249.827 Middle mile 249.436 last mile 205.425
Qualified in both first and second -- running on yesterday's 241 record. Good run, Mark.
-
Next up is Rex Svoboda in the 631 Saab BFCC. 450" Keith Bklack motor, Tom Burkland crew chief. Quarter mile speed is 228.531, mile 235.646, middle mile 248.457, last mile 253.209, chute's out.
We're going to move us again -- so I'll sign off for a while and go take some photos and ask some questions. Cath you later, crocodile.

We had a bearing fail on the Muncie trans in Max's liner, and we found one in SLC. We heard Nick was already on his way there on his own parts search, so he will pick it up for us. Thanks again Nick, we really appreciate your help. Just might have time to get the new bearing in and make a run today.

I'm afraid Freud was sorta right when he said I'd traded in my photo vest for a helmet. Well, not entirely. I shot Record Returns and some other stuff. Jim got 2 runs in with the truck and I got 1. Speed is up to 110. I only have 1 left on my ticket, but that's ok, I need to split soon to cover a sports car national event at Miller's.
Here are a few from Returns.

What are Burkdoll/Hawley running for an I engine??
Mike
-
Just heard from Robbie Cohn that he has a bent wheel so he said they will try to make the finals next month.. :-(
Slim thanks for the updates...and good luck to your new found racer friend.
John
-
That sucks. Do they run really special wheels that nobody has a spare?
-
Yep, custom steel wheels with a special offset for clearance..I think the record was only 217 and he spun through the lights at 240+ going out of four and in to five.. :-o

What are Burkdoll/Hawley running for an I engine??

I asked Jim that very question on Wednesday. He said it was a Suzuki GSXR 1000.

Just noticed there has not been much posted today at all from the salt... Exception of some great pictures from Ray the Rat. Last I say Ray was busting his but on that pickup that they have there for the 130 club....
I was not out of pits at all today we are packing up and ready for the haul home.
Our first pass was 228 with a 234 exit. This pass was to check out the new front end and a parachute deployment test to see how the car felt. Car did pull left a little and parachutes were ok at that speed. This was a new engine and we wanted to check the data and see how it was going. We had a really safe tuneup in the car. we noticed only one spot on the low end where it could have used some more fuel and I made that adjustment. This was the point where the car leaves the push truck. The instruction was to shift this run at about 8000 rpm. Stainless was a little busy in the car during the run and didn't notice he was shifting a little sooner each shift.
Took the car back and worked on it most of day and got it in line. Five cars back we noticed something leaking from car. Pulled body off of the car and found the output seal from the B&J trans popped out. Cory and I went to panic mode and starting pulling stuff off the car to get to the seal and got it put back in. We got back in the rotation in the line and got it fired and checked and we had intentions to run a good number this time. We got off the truck real good and sounded much better about the 1 1/2 mile Stainless clicked it off. Engine shut off, had a hard time shifting and heard a pop and bang. Got the liner back to pits and found the front dust cover came off and spit it out about the 1 mile. They did end up finding it for us. So we got that all solved and went back out in morning and checked things out.

This morning we found two plugs broken off where the wire insulator ended. A quick trip over to Rick and a quick blurb about what happened, Rick had an answer and off we went with 6 new plugs. Got them installed, fired the motor. Noise in engine. Pulled pan and found the rod on top of the crank. We loaded the car tonight.
JonAmo

So I have been busy on the salt, but I still pay some attention and found some quick blurbs here and there.
Speedway guys had a great pass at I believe 324 on a 290 and change record on a Nish 310 record. That car sounded real good going by.
Dean Sabentelli (Spelling is probably wrong) ran 224 mph in MPS-BF 1000cc and is in impound. He is on his Third tire of the meet. Two other "Race" tires chunked pretty heavily. One of them down to the cords. However no pressure loss.
Mark Deluca back in impound with a pair of miles in the 249 range. I think we could see a 250 NA record in the morning.
Kim Creb (spelling) on the 750 Turbo bike with went about the same speed of 223 (Maybe 222), they changed the tail section and didn't seem to improve speed, in fact was same performance as stock tail.
Mormon Missle showed us and it was like a bunch of ants working in an ant hill. I was not able to stop and check things out.
Looked like Roger Lessman had the motor put back in his streamliner after a clutch exploded a day before.

Yes Spirit of Rhett has top time of the meet. They went back to the fuel motor from last year. I had heard rumors that the blown motor was hurt right before they installed it. There was rumor that he was only testing parachutes on the car this meet in preperation of the meet next week. When doing the blown motor I heard that the car was stretched 3-4 feet. So partially a new body on it. It was be a great story of facts if someone could see and talk to them to make sure this is accurate.
Mad Max had a bearing failure on the Lambky Liner. However these guys don't give up. They are working on a fix. I heard this at about the 2 mile today. Goes strong and when the 1-2 shift came in, it was missed which seemed like twice then he got it in gear and it roared off into the sunset. 200 mph exit. Max has gotten 8 runs out of these engines without major problems so that if anything is an accomplishment. No chain problems.
When George Fields made his 308 mph run in his coupe it was only on 3 cylinders. That is just amazing. That is pretty much the car to watch and listen to when it goes by. Those guys always get my vote for wrench of the meet.
Burkdolls got that silly truck in impound with a 105 mph pass. GSXR 1000 engine. It was fun after every run them manufacturing some type of air box coming into the truck. These guys I think put this together in a couple weeks before the event. even funnier to hear it coming down the course. They are having a blast with it.

Thanks, Jon!

Jon,
Sorry to hear this. I was pulling for you, SS, and the crew. I hope it is not to bad.

last I heard Vesco's were at about 310 mph after their run last night, I had not heard much today as what is going on with them. But there was alot of activity going on, and they were putting stuff back together.
Shipley was ready to go last night and did make a go, but they had bad exhaust fumes in the car so he shut it off. In this twin engine car the exhaust from both motors goes below the drivers area and out the back. They driver is in the rear of the car. They were working on a fix for it. I don't know If I mentioned this before to give a glimpse of the setup. Both motors are sidways in the car, each motor drives a belt to a transmission input, trans output to a jackshaft, then the jackshaft which then it drives each set of wheels seperatly (front and rear). real neat setup in the car. They also were working on getting things buttoned up before I left.

Its real bad, anybody got a compete Buick stage II collecting dust???????? I was hoping for something so complete that I can jack up the valve covers and when installed lower the valve covers on the engine.

Jon Amo, I am sitting in Noxon, Montana overlooking the Clark Fork River, but although its like paradise here, I wish I was on the salt.
I will call you Tuesday with Courtney Hizer's phone number in Rome, Georgia. Courtney runs the flat black Buick GN with the BIG turbo on a oddball GM big block. He was involved in the Buick Indy program and Grand National racing and has or had a shitload of parts............................ Bob
-
The smoke in Shipley's liner was gear oil on the headers. He has installed 4-speeds with pumps to cool the lube this year. They had a leak and it soaked the header wrap.
-
The Mormon Missle got a run in late in the evening. It was a sight to be seen, Lynn Goodfellow got in the car and drove a shake down pass. Lynn hasn't been in the car since the incident several years ago. When he got in the car there was a crowd of clapping and hollering for him. He made a good run.
Vesco Car made a run, did not get the speed but hear he ended up past the eight mile, that was just some info I heard tonight. When I have said Vesco - I mean the vesco car, Dave Spangler has been driving.
JonAmo
-
Way to go Lynn

That sucks. Do they run really special wheels that nobody has a spare?
Ummm Bonneville vehicles are such a special circumstance. some people run different rim widths, offsets, sizes..... Do you see many monza's out there? It's harder then you think to find parts for a car, even like wheels. We are not a cookie cutter type of racing. Its like bringing a Harley to a Metric Race and asking the same question. Many competitors do not bring spares. And you are looking at a much smaller meet with less variety of vehicles.
The best story that many Bonneville speedweek racers would remember that have been racing on the salt was with the Late John Beckett and Tom Bryant....
Beckett qualified on Tom's record in a comp coupe class, in the process he blew a tire and destroyed the side of the chevett. Took it to impound anyway, and banged away with hammers and whatever else to get the tire out and rim out from the vehicle. Tom Bryant, who's record was in jeopardy, came over with the tires and wheels off his car and gave them to John to run on the return in morning. John did get the record and Tom was there first with a hand shake. Those two batteled the friendliest battle I have ever seen on the salt.

Beckett and Bryant.
That's a case of quality meeting quality.
Bonneville Personified!
I wouldn't expect anything else.
Thanks Amo for the reporting.

Andy Sills, the fellow who's riding the BMW S1000RR and for whom we're crewing, managed to get it into impound this afternoon. He made three passes earlier, running on the Randall Parker 194.546 P/P 1000 record from a few years ago. Andy's runs were all close -- 194.0, 193.8, 194.05, but not quite. Late this afternoon we did a few more things to try to find that last mph -- and he put down a 196.48. He's in impound and we're hoping the cool morning air will give him enough to back up the run with another good one. Geez, though -- be at Land's End at 6.45 for the parade to impound by 7, then the parade to the line at 8. Ah, what the heck -- helping someone else work on a record is almost as much fun as doing it for ourselves.
Here are the qualifiers from today. The usual format -- number, name, class, fast mile. I'll post the racers that back up those records tomorrow morning, after the runs are complete.

Now they've got the pleasure of getting to impound at 7 and installing the headers in the early light - and being ready to run by 8. Good luck, Ragsdales.
**Mark qualified in both the first and second miles. The first mile is the speed you see above. I don't know which speed he's going to choose tomorrow, though.
*** I don't know which of these two bikes of Jack's did it, but he powered through to the five mile, I hear. Glen, you would have been having purple stars shooting in front of your eyes if it had happened on your watch -- taking all of about 5 and a half minutes to make the entire run. I'm told the rider has been asked to turn out by the 3 1/8 or so from now on.
Finally, Ray Buck had to boogie back to SLC late this afternoon -- to shoot photos at another event this weekend. He sends his greetings -- and remind everyone that he (and all of us) will be here Monday for the beginning of the Shootout.
Speaking of the Shootout, Mike Cook was sitting on the tailgate of our pickup tonight and expounding on the cars that'll be at the Shootout (so far). Poteet and Main, of course, and the Nish Family is on the trailer waiting to head out here. You've already read something about Lynn Goodfellow and the Mormon Missile, and I guess the story is that if he gets in two good runs tomorrow -- he'll probably run at the Shootout. Amir Rosenbaum and the Spectre (nee Kenny Hoover streamliner) is "maybe" -- hasn't checked in in a couple of days. No word about bikes, other than Mike Akatiff and the Ack Attack will be here, and I hear Scott Horner has probably got something heading out here -- something in the way of sit-on bikes. We'll see.
The Shootout will begin with meetings on Sunday morning, and runs starting first thing Monday. It'll run on the International course -- which will be at least 11 miles of good salt.
Jim Burkdoll, president of the USFRA and race director for World of Speed, says the meet will end tomorrow. Record return runs in the morning, qualifying all day, with final record runs to end by noon -- no, 'til 2PM, but later word has it that maybe the return runs won't start 'til later so everything is done by 4. Lots of entrants are still here, and the weather and the track are both superb -- so let's run as long as we can ('til the volunteers say "That's Enough!" We've gotta get going to get all of this stuff picked up so Mike Cook can run."
That's enough for me, too. It's 20 past ten and we've got to get Andy and Erin (his lady/co-rider) to Land'sEnd early. I'll see you all tomorrow. G'night.

JonAmo
Amen to that about Lynn Goodfellow!! I was one of those clapping and cheering.
I think we'll see 'em next week at the shootout.
I'm fallin asleep, so please bear with me.

Some more before dreamland calls...and it's gettin close.

Ray ... you done good ... keep at it ...

The first bearing for the Lambky Liner found in SLC wasn't the correct one, but Brian at Lelis Transmissions in SLC kept pursuing, and found a bearing supply in Brigham City with the right one. Many kudos to Brian. Max and Stainless drove out to get it last evening, and the bearing is being installed right now. Crunch time, there is still hope in Max's pit for a good qualifying run and a trip to impound.
-
Thanks for all the information and pictures everyone

In other news, most of the return run vehicles have been successful this morning. There are only a few left here in the line -- the UVU car, Andy Sills on the BMW S1000, Dean Sabatinelli hasn't run, Bob Ragsdale and the 745 Blast from the Past Stude, and Sam Dakin on the 6062 A PS PBF 1350 bike. He ran 102 on a 100 1/2 record yesterday.
Sarno's car left lots of parts and glass on the track -- we'll be down for more than just a few minutes.

any landing you can walk away from is a good landing

I've got a few minutes -- here are some Saturday morning in impound photos.

Is the Lectrik liner making a return pass, if so what was the qualifier?
Slim, thanks for the updates and pictures ! ! ! !

No, the 'lectric bike is in the short course line -- not return runs. I'll go ask how fast she's gone.
-
Jon,
Thanks.

The bearing is in, and we just did a test start of the motors and checked the trans and shifting, all systems go. We're changing the oil and prepping Max's liner to head for the start line.
-
A couple of quotes
Max: "It sure runs good when it's not on fire"
Stainless: "It's easy to find the end of the safety wire, it's where the blood from your finger is"
-
comet...regarding Max Liner....
"..it should go faster if they get it to shift into high gear.."..
sss...thanks much for sharing the action from the morning at the line...and the
wonderful sunrise shots...!!!!!!

Congratulations Mark, Larry, Steve and Laura!!
-
Message to Stainless:
TO PREVENT THE FLOW OF BLOOD
To prevent the flow of blood from lock wiring cut the twisted end off a little long and then bend the end back on itself. This prevents a lot of punctures and scratches.

-
Jon, did you get any updates on the Vesco liner.
WOW, #4000 post.
-
are you done for the day?
Just wondering. I get addicted to your reporting and was waiting to see how the American Eagle streamline was doing
-
Jon, did you get any updates on the Vesco liner.
No idea what they ran, but they pulled into impound a little bit ago.
-
Wow, the bikes have done good
Does anyone know what motor is in the NA bike that ran the record?
SSS- you are a great guy for helping out Andy. You helped me out last year, and it means a lot to all of us.
Thanks to you and Nancy for being there and babysitting us n000bs along. Cheers on his record victory as well!

Here are the qualifiers from morning through about 1.30PM. The qualifying runs are now completed, mostly, and the return runs will now -- but continue through at least four PM -- for those that just got to impound.
And first of all, yes, Skip Hedrich's car did qualify. So did Max's bike liner.
992 B/FS Skip Hedrich 348.234
1933 U/HH2 Ye Olde Dragon 192.124
Bike 2785 SCS/VBF Max's liner 185.855 (open record -- all three miles were qualifiers - this number was the highest speed, in the last mile).
Bike 3371 A/PS/BF 750 Watters/Higgins, with Fireman Jim on board 223.846 (Jim had a wild ride - ask him!).
Bike 4225 M/PS PBF 350 Kamphuis Racing 53.383
Bike 9391 A/PF 3000 Bailey's Speed Shop 174.943
9996 XXO/BGC Salt Cat 183.230
That's the list. There will likely be a few more qualifiers, and also later I'll get you the racers that back up these qualifiers. In the meantime -- we've left the track for the motel - to do laundry. We'll be back lut there in a few hours. Todd and Josh are still working on measuring Andy Sill's S1000 BMW and we need to get them back from impound. See you in a while.
-
Oh, the Vesco car. Yes, it's in impound, but pulled in as we were driving out. I don't have their speed. Will get it soon.
As for the Forstall/Knecum/DeLuca bike -- the motor was based on a 'Busa built big -- about 1675 or so cc.
-
since sss is busy doing laundry...
anyone out there with updates feel free to post them for
the rest of us beggars...
thanks

That's all I've got now. I'm waiting for Skip to make that run -- and then it'll be over for another year. I'll be back in a few minutes.
-
Christmas in Sept for Josh.
FerD
-
And it's a big anti-climax -- because Skip pulled the chute about the 1 1/2. That's it -- World of Speed 2010 is over. Thanks for reading along. I'll no doubt get some more of this-n-that during the next few hours and days, but for now -- I'm done. C U Later.
-
Did the chute come out?
Many times it hasn't.
FREUD
-
Yes -- I knew the run was over 'cause I saw the chute flying in the breeze behind the car. The fun is done for now.
Well, most of it -- the S1000 BMW is being scotch taped and baling wired together so it can be ridden home. It turns out that BMW does not print a shop manual -- only on-line. That might be fine in a nice shop, but Debbie's been working with the laptop out in the sun (well, under our easy-up) to try to give the guys the requested information. But it's back together now.
Almost.
-
Debbie....let them buy dinner for you.
FREUD

Thank Slim and Nancy and Ray the rat for the updates, looks like I will sit here for at least one more week, but will see you two at World finals.

What happen to Vesco, last we heard he was in impound, did they make a return run????? :-o
-
...Dave Sarno on a return run between 4 and 5 mile flipped the car
after 228 in middle mile 10 over record....
he was able to get out of car before crews arrived...

joe
I was at the starting line, filming him "take off". I turned away for a second, and saw a bunch of white dust and thought that looked a bit odd. This being my first time to the flats, and that was the first car I had ever seen run, assumed it was dust from high speed ops.
Then, I heard what happened. Never did see the carnage, but, really didn't come to the flats to watch crashes. Hope he's OK.
-
Great coverage by everyone. Thanks so much.
-
Thanks for all up dates/pics

Team Vesco did get the unblown-B- gas streamliner record at 337.3 MPH, exit speed of 343mph. Looks like they found the problem. Next is the world finals, and maybe a little fuel this time.
 :-D
-
For those who love streamliners, Saturday had to be a feature day to remember. It seemed that every time I turned around there was another streamliner ready to make a pass. Usually Saturday afternoon erodes to stock bodied cars running laps. Yesterday it was streamliner city.
The MacKichan/Schulz liner has an interesting back story. They brought the car to World of Speed intending it to be the car's "swan song" before the car is permanently retired on display in the Museum of American Speed at Speedway Motors. Their fight with bureaucracy has been bitter at times. Much tougher than getting the streamliner to go fast. Their aluminum billet front wheels have caused them to be denied entry at several meets. Their runs at World of Speed and their resulting class record were the perfect capper for the team. Three record qualifications, two missed back up times and then yesterday's record set on the last run for the car had the team on the road back to Lincoln with huge smiles. Couldn't have happened to a nicer race team. Oh yes, and thanks to Barb for tending Kessie while Jessica was with the team on the salt.
-
Tim Schulz didn't even bring his blue hat to the meet and was sporting a white USFRA event cap with dirt smudges on the brim from working on the car,
Here's a happy John MacKichan:
-
Boy did I have a great time this week on the salt!
Spent some time with Billy Shoemaker and was there while he received entry into the 200mph club.
Also spent the week with the Forstall Team. Thanks to them for letting me be with them during this historic week. They really have their act together, those three guys (Larry, Steve, Mark) know how to do it!
A 252 record with all motor blows my mind. I don't know about the rest of you, but it makes me feel slow as hell.
Can't post the pic right now, but had my picture taken with Mark and Jon Minonno(sp?) Its way cool, the three firsts to 250
Bill
-
Bill .... didnt know you were there ... dont be shy and post some photos ... Joe
-
I might have some shots with Bill and Steve and Mark - will dig through 'em for later. In the meantime, here's the last sunset on the salt of World of Speed 2010. It features Nancy, of course.

It was enhanced by your magnificent model.

Since yer online, Doc, here are a few of the results of your suggestion. The camera would not allow me to shoot at 1 10th, even with 100 ISO. I had to settle for 1/30th-1/60th, but at 400mm effective focal length, there was more than sufficient panning blur. It sure made it easy to thin the herd. Only about 1 out of 12 keepers. But that's not the only thing I shot. I got some other stuff...including one that shows the effect the wind was having on my camera. It was blowing from right to left...made the track greasy as hell for the drivers, but they did a fairly good job of staying on the track.
-
Just a note, I haven't seen any other posts.
Dr. Mayfield, long time owner of the World's Fastest Sunbeam Wannabee has made a step forward.
the "Wannabee" made a run of 204.9 or so - faster than Seagraves 203.792 making Larry Mayfield's Sunbeam the World's Fastest.

Congratulations Mayf! We knew it would come someday. . . .
-
Hey Ray. Great job of panning! :-D :-D :-D
I sometimes go over to the airport, because it's really close, and practice on the planes landing. When they're in close they're really moving and I often have to adjust the zoom at the same time.
Keep up the good work!
Pete
-
Peter, do you have to follow focus at the same time?
That's Old School.
FREUD
-
I have the camera on continuous focus, so it looks after that department. Panning and zooming (actually dezooming :?) all at once is enough for this senior citizen.
Pete

Just a little camera and almost no zoom/tele lens here - the tiny yellow dot in the background is the Amo-Steele liner with chute deployed around the 2.5 mile - The Piggy and the Turtle were at the salt to gather material for a childrens story :-D

The Mormon Missile got a run in late in the evening. It was a sight to be seen, Lynn Goodfellow got in the car and drove a shake down pass. Lynn hasn't been in the car since the incident several years ago. When he got in the car there was a crowd of clapping and hollering for him. He made a good run.
If I may be so bold; I hope this isn't redundant; search revealed nonesuch.
I happened to run into a few of Lynn's crew at the A/P; one was about to leave in a small plane.
"We threw a u-joint and shut off." "didn't whip around too much or cause damage that's not repairable."
Should be in good shape for W/F.
We might send up prayers for continued good luck and the best of health for all involved in this project.
Regards,
JIM

For Max and his liner crew, this was our first mixed car and bike event for a number of years, and our first WoS. It was nice to hear something other than turbo Busa's going down the course :-)
We really enjoyed WoS, thanks to USFRA and all the volunteers for hosting a great event. I hope Max is considering doing both BUB and WoS again next year.

Hey Dean, these first two runs listed for Watters/Higgins were with Greg on board, not Kim. If not for the fantastic runs by Mark on that gorgeous Busa,Greg would have been fastest guy again--on a 750!

This year was my first time on the salt for an event and boy am I hooked! I had planned on running in the 130 class with my GMC Canyon but I got behind on my build due to work commitments. I decided to come out as a spectator for a couple of days anyway and it was one of the best motorsports experiences that I have ever had. I am so looking forward to 2011 when I plan on running my truck.
I met a lot of really friendly people including Jon and Nancy, as I was passing by their pit. Unless crews were thrashing on a car, everyone I spoke to took the time to talk to me and answer my questions. There were some incredibly cool rides out there. Knowing how the event runs and having a lay of the land will help me next year so I can concentrate on the driving rather than having to figure out which line I need to be in.
As a former SCCA/CART/IMSA, etc volunteer corner worker I'd like to thank the volunteers that helped to put on this event. It was very well organized and seemed to run very smoothly. It was pretty cool that I could pick up the 1610 AM race control broadcast at the good old Motel 6 in Wendover, too!
