From SCTA
Quote
09/08/10:   This weekend, September 11th, is Phelan Phun Days. The parade will start at 10am and the streets will be blocked off. This will effect people coming up Hwy 138 from the 15 north.  Sheep Creek Road will be blocked at Phelan Road. Hope this helps get the word out.    An alternate route is to go on 138 to Oasis, right on Oasis to Palmdale Rd (Hwy 18) and then right  onto Sheep Creek.  The Palmdale Road access to Sheep Creek Rd will be unaffected.                                      Susan Foley and Miriam Macmillan

"Palmdale Rd (Hwy 18) and then right  onto Sheep Creek.  The Palmdale Road access to Sheep Creek . . ."

It should read . . .

Palmdale Rd (Hwy 18) and then right ON PALMDALE RD. TO Sheep Creek, AND THEN LEFT ON SHEEP CREEK.  The Palmdale Road access to Sheep Creek . . .

. . . and remember the closure is on SATURDAY morning.  And how long could a Phelan parade last?  Ought to be clear in the afternoon, and for sure by early Sunday morning.

We showed up at El Mo yesterday at 3:30 pm and saw that their was a lot of damaged dirt from cars doing donuts however we were also shocked to see BMW out here filming a car commercial and guess what, they were doing donuts and high speed slides all over the lake bed tearing it up. :x

Tiny said they have been out here three days tearing it up!!

Course looks Green and slippery :x

See you all here...

I'm at El Mirage.  I got here at 3 PM and there is NO line for inspection.  Occasionally someone shows up.  this is going to be a very small meet.  Too bad the track isn't better.  You could get multiple runs in easily!
Title: Re: ELMO SEPT 12
Post by: Bonneville Racing News on September 12, 2010, 11:24:00 AM
Things started right on time but no wind and a dusty track is holding it up.

Rick Yacoucci in the normally aspirated flathead was first off the line.  He did 183.1 or was it 185 mph.  Either way it was a BIG record against the existing 168 according to the announcer.  Looks good wih a new paint job and graphics too.

Salty Dog Racing, Was next.  It sounded great but he missed the record.  did 217 against the 229 mph record.

The tiny #6060, a Costella liner, was having trouble starting.  Then once she got on the course, it went outside the cones at the quarter I was told.  It must be difficult seeing from that low on the track and the dust is hanging.  They have stopped for several minutes and it is still pure dust looking down the track.

John Noonan just did 248.3 mph! announcer said it is a record so he must be in a different class than July when he did 252 mph.

The Hondata set a record and a bit of a breeze is starting.  Life is good at El Mirage.

Post by: Bonneville Racing News on September 12, 2010, 01:24:24 PM
After Noonan and Salty Dogs I haven't seen another vehicle in the 200mph line.  Noonan probably has the High Speed of the Meet

the six rookies at this meet are showing up now with their vehicles.  S CTA has a new rookie orientation procedure.  They have to watch the first ten entries leaving the line.  Then they go down and watch at the lights and finish line.  after that they can get in the rookie line for licensing passes.  The BLM is watching closely and they want NO mistakes.

At 11:44 we started second runs.

the little #6060 ran again and got it inside the cones this time for a record at 158 mph.

Lattin and Gillette have a new car his grandson is driving.  It is a 1931 Austin American 3-windowed coupe.  Too cute! (hey I'm a female). He put the record up 5mph to 85 mph.

It's getting HOT but at least there is just enough breeze down the track to clear the dust.  they say there is a soft spot mid way down the track and no way around it.  They simply have to drive through it and it clears up on the other side.

I think Iheard them call round 4 a few minutes ago.  I believe Noonan went over 240.  The course has a big soft spot and like Wendy said theres no way around it.  I went through it and went right for a few feet.  Ran 120 on a 116 record so I can't complain.  Hell we're racing so what is there to complain about?

The dust is behind the car so it shows it's pretty clean and not a vacuum pulling it back and under the lakester. Good shot. A lot of coupes have a lot of dirt under the rear.

From '58 or so until '65 I had a '31 Austin 3 window. Rare car I thought all the Austins were 5 windows. Mine was a pickup cab with a trunk brazzed on. I can't believe Lattin has that thing. Anyone with a picture?

I've compiled a list of all of the V4 runs and there were no vintage gas coupes recorded that I found or other vehicles with Lattin/Gillette in the name (I haven't double-checked that - your mileage may vary).

Tom,

That earned Ralph Hudson his Dirty 2 hat with a run of 203 mph!!  Congrats to him on his stellar achievements this year, two hats for him and one for his racing partner who plastered a ton of mph on the existing 750 records at Bonneville a few weeks ago.

Watch for even higher speeds for these two.

Gotta give it up to John Noonan, that man can ride a motorcycle. I ain't never seen anybody that can ride a bike like this guy. Valentino Rossi could learn a few things from John. I don't know how he does it. Just an amazing pass. Talked to him a few moments before he was ready to go, into a pure dust cloud that was sitting on the top end and going nowhere. He was a vision of confidence when he told the starter " yea , I'll go , and be safe, no problem". And let me tell you, if you wern't there, he found pretty much no traction that I could tell. It was all throttle control and probley a little weight shifting around on the bike all the way down. I am so amazed at his skill.

You also gotta love the Lefevers family, those boys , guided by there dad , are doing really well , and getting that hot rod down the coarse. Mike knows how to build some big H.P. and when he thinks the boys are ready , just my guess , we will see some big numbers from those boys. Great car , great people.

John, Gas Coupes are like Street Roadsters with similar rules. How many Street Roadsters have stock louvers side panels on their hoods.  One difference is a Gas Coupe must have a stock hood length where a Street Roadster can have a specified inch extention. Amereican Austins are very hard to work with.........JD

Not sure yrs truly needs to refer to the rule book to clarify louvers in hood side panels.

Have a personal experience with one St Roadster who had set several records with small (3-4") louvers & made new panels with 6' ones and picked up 4MPH . Nobody protested the car before or after.

DECK lid louvers in STR? NoNONONONONO!

We witnessed that AMERICAN AUSTIN'S (Not a Bantam!) run Sunday and for all you TECHNOCRITICS methinks there should be  allowances for COOL, QUIRKY, stuff!

And I'm not a Lattin fan!
