Yer tired and windblown landracing reporter finally got here!

Weather report.  Very pleasant.  Temps in the 70s, a gentle breeze and bikes are running on the course.  Registration is a little chaotic, but not bad.  Here are fotos of the pits and tech.  More to follow as I wander around doing my cub reporter thing.

Just as additional info, the announcing broadcast is on FM 89.5

Ray ... good call ... I can update from this morning. Drivers meeting at 0700. Dennis Manning (Bub) and Ken Salent (AMA) gave the opening. Rex Sloboda went over the course procedures and held a rookie meeting immediately after the drivers meeting. I got a lot of pictures from tech this morning that I post later. Ray's will be better.

Joe, just for the sake of being nice to a guy who's name isn't as easy to spell as is yours -- Rex's last name is Svoboda.  He runs the 313 car and is crew chief for the Burkland Family 'liner.

Thanks for all of the information on what's going on out there.  I'll be checking the Forum frequently, I promise - - and not just for your spelling errors. :-D

Thanks for the help, Joe.  I'm here by myself and can't be everywhere at once.  Your photos will be really helpful.

I wandered down to the end of the pits and got a shot looking back toward Land's End.

According to the Wunderground radar animation loop, the weather cells are passing to the west of the salt.

I ran into Tom Mellor with his Rolls Royce tow car and partially (about as partially as you can get) streamlined Triumph.

Back to work.

weather update ... wind from the north at ZERO mph ... tough to figure that out .... my manometer indicates no wind ... The Klocks are here in force ... 5 bikes, all painted charcoal and red.   Had an interesting discussion with a woman that is the rider on a sidecar rig. She identified herself as the "the monkey".   In fact, she has a stuffed monkey under the fairing.

Slim, I clearly stated that the copy part of anything I did would not meet your standards. It is considerably more difficult to get the story part. The photos are much easier.  Maybe 25 bikes in pre-stage right now. There are some return runs on course right now.

checking the track for debris. Some interesting stuff from this morning, a 500cc bike left the starting line on the long course without being flagged off. He proceeded to run the entire course long past mile 5 and was last seen approaching floating mountain.

In 2008 Tom Mellor ran 750 MPS-PG setting the AMA record at 180.317
and a record in 750 M-PG at 159.903.

It looks like he is upping his Triumph Triple to 1000 MPG-PG with the current record set in 2008 of 164.117 by W. Hodgson on a BMW.
Will he also remove the fairing and go for the current 1000 M-PG record of 155.848 set by S. Hamel on a Vincent?

Pretty good for a retired guy from British Columbia that races "on my pension income."

Just after I saw Tom, I saw Peg Leg Craig's pit and he graciously offered to pose in front of his partially streamlined sidecar rig.  He's good people.

Then I went out to the end of the measured mile and I heard some guys whoopin and hollerin.  I had to go check it out and I found that Dave Edwards ran 176 on his 1650 Partial Production Kawasaki.  Not such a huge number, but he and his crew man were all pumped up because that allows him to run on the long course.  Dave even went back into the trailer to put his leathers on for the foto.

Joe, I only mentioned the "correct" spelling of Rex's name because it's a very uncommon name/spelling and lots of folks probably don't know anything about it.  Since he's working in the timing tower (I assume he is, along with Tom Burkland -- they've been in the tower for the past few Bub meets) I thought I'd help everyone reading these pages know who's who.

It's obvious that you're taking time out of your personal day to make the posts and get the photos -- and I appreciate it very much.  Thanks yet another time.

I'm back at the motel.  I just got an email from Max Lambky's wife that told me the reason for his aborted run earlier today.  Apparently there was a loose wire that wouldn't allow the thing to shift outta first gear.

Also talked with Lars about the Indian.  More on a separate post.

Lars and the Indian.  Talk about things crossing in the mail...

This one's gonna take a while, so grab a cool one and sit back.

During Speed Week, everyone (well, maybe not EVERYone...but close) was asking about Lars and his Indian.  I caught up with him at Salt Talks and we visited for a bit but didn't get any info on the bike.  It was a nice chat, nonetheless.

This afternoon, I came to Randy Crenshaw's pit where my tall friend (we look like Mutt and Jeff when we're together...he's about a whole foot taller than I am) Jim, aka Texican is serving as gourmet chef for the team.  Kinda hard to miss either one...the Texican part or the chef part.  He's havin the time of his life.  Happier than a pig in sh1t.  Randy had made one shakedown pass and that was it.  More runs tomorrow.

While I was there, Randy came over to visit (seems like I do as much of that as I do shooting fotos or updating the forum...but I get some interesting info that way.)  As we were talking we heard a very aggressive exhaust note that echoed off the mountains or something.  It was eerie but pleasant at the same time.  A VERY mean-sounding motor.  Randy mentioned that every time he heard it, the hairs on his arms stood up.  I can sure agree with that.  So I went to investigate.

I found that two pits down, Lars had his pit and he'd been rapping the throttle of the Indian.  Check the foto.  Anyway he'd shut it off by the time I got there, but greeted me with a great big smile on his face.  He told me that he'd just found out what it was that had been causing him a whole lotta trouble.

He was just bubbling with excitement.  He said he'd run tomorrow and the smile got even bigger.  I told him that I'd update landracing and he said to mention that he was "the happiest guy in the world."

So.  Nothing but good news up and down the pits except for one Honda 450 team that was packin up cuz so many little things had gone wrong that they figgered it would be a better idea to fix everything back at the shop.  With my Swiss Cheese memory, I can't remember who it was.  Dam, I hate this memory trouble sh1t.

I've got a couple more fotos to post, but I'll be posting further news about everybody I can find out about.

Maybe it's time for another cool one.

From the "There.  I fixed it" department.

First one is proof that if a little bit is good, then more's better.  And a LOT more is a LOT better.  Or you can never have too much hauling power.  Or something like that.

I've seen some interesting race car haulers, but this one takes the cake.

Red Green strikes again.  For those who thought my "Redneck Special" trailer was kinda goofy (including me) then check out these fotos.  I guess if ya got a Taurus with a wiped out rear end (there's a good straight line if I ever heard one) and part of a pickup bed, then call up Red Green and put him to work.  You'll end up with the strangest extended cab pickup ever.

The kicker is the tonneau cover. It's made from foam board and "sculpted" into shape, chamfered edges and all.  And it's from Minnesota...maybe Red DID do the job.  Stranger than fiction.

Finally, there's another Red Green thing.  One of the shows was centered around a "great big thing" coming down the road.  Well, I found it.  As I passed it on the freeway, I thought it might be going to the Carlin Gold Mine, the site of the largest gold discovery of the 20th century.  Long ago in a galaxy far away, I was the hardware tech for their Remote Job Entry (RJE) system.  It was located next to  the building that housed the ball mills.  Absolutely filthy.  If you were clean when ya got there, you sure weren't when ya left...even if ya never left the office building.  Later they built a newer office structure near the leaching ponds...and ended up with a large mainframe system.  I don't EVER regret going into software development shortly after that system upgrade happened.  Software is much cleaner than hardware.  And it was there that I learned to hate 80 column punch card systems.

Ok.  it's time for bed.  I'll be back on the job tomorrow.

The Black Lightning failed to shift from first gear on it's shake down run today.  Did about 180 or so in first.  Plugs looked good. chains all looked good, found a salt infected wire, but further investigation revealed that would not cause the no shift,  Have a few more checks to run in the morning, then we will try again.

We were on the access road to the salt this morning for the second day of racing at 6 am today. Everyone was being turned around because of water on the salt. They said to come back at 10 am. We only made one run yesterday and that was 199.91, with VERY slippery salt, and no big speeds so far.

On tires here at BUB. Drew Gatewood, head scrutineer, had all the 200mph guys promise to report tire data to him. After my last run I measured the temp at 90 degrees with ambient salt temps around 83 degrees. So nothing to report yet. My daughter's husband who was riding my turbo ZX-10r had a FRONT tire blow out at 163 mph but he hung on withou going down. The valve stem broke and we have no idea why. We spent a few hours fixing the tire and all is OK now.

We have 4 more days of racing, so hopefully there will be some better news to report.

Ken Saillant states that the AMA and Bub's staff meeting is set for 10 am ... the conditions will be assessed at that time ... there is a possibility of racing later in the afternoon ... there is standing water on the international course and it maybe possible to use it short plus the mountain course ...

To digress:

If that's a section of the tower for a wind generator -- it's not a "standard" piece.  We've been seeing lots of the tower pieces this summer, and most of them are longer than the one in the photo -- and much lighter (weight).  There was one in the parking lot of a motel where we stayed in Green River, Utah, last weekend -- and I took the time to get close to it.  First of all, this one (in the parking lot) was similar to most -- about 60 feet long and carried on a dual-axle dolly that was tied to the tractor, which also was a dual-axle unit.  The load that duals can carry is limited to about 40,000# or less.  The photo you put up here shows lots more axles than just five -- which implies heavier than the usual 80 - 90,000# GVW.  Ditto the length -- the "tube" itself looks pretty short (comparing it to the rest of the stuff in the photo).

So maybe it was for a wind generator, but for one hellaciously big unit -- not the ones we see scattered over the landscape here and there throughout the county.

To add to what's been said, I'll pass on some info I got from my tall friend Texican.

He called and told me that there's a lotta water at Land's End.  This isn't unusual (see foto from 2003
http://www.chevyasylum.com/lsr/bsf2003/wf/031015/031015_001r8.jpg (http://www.chevyasylum.com/lsr/bsf2003/wf/031015/031015_001r8.jpg) ); some water in the pits and the course condition is unknown at the moment, except for what's already been posted.  I think "wet" would be be a safe bet.

More news as it happens.

I wanna thank Joe and Don for filling in with fotos.  Sure makes for better coverage of the meet.

For what it's worth ...
We had a rather wild but short storm go through SLC this morning.  Lots of thunder, some lightning and pelting rain.  It looks like the rain is about over now.  What is the standing water situation like on the salt?  It's supposed to be cooler today but warm up after tomorrow in the city.

Yep it's part of the newer model 400' tall wind generators. You know, one of the things that are robbing gigajuoles of energy from our atmosphere. Talk about affecting our weather, this has the potential to be way worse than so-called ozone depletion and greenhouse effects.
Prove me wrong. Think maybe I'll write a book and make a movie.

Richard, I'm pleased that at least someone understands that wind energy is still energy, and that converting it to electricity changes the entire energy (of the planet) equation.  Not much, probably, but still. . .

As for other environment-changing things like ozone and greenhouse gas -- I'll be happy to chat about those viv-a-vis, not here on the racing Forum.  I've got some ideas, and evidently so do you --= and maybe sharing them would bring about a bit of learning for each of us.  No beer for me, please, but feel free to visit next time we're both at the salt or wherever and have some time to burn.

Latest update:  the decision to run has been put off until 2 peeyem.  Last time someone checked there was still standing water on at least 1 of the courses.  The word I got is that if they DO run at, it'll prolly be short course only.

Right now it's 59F and overcast.  Wind is very light: 2-5mph gusts.

If I had to make a guess, I'd say that tomorrow would be a better day for racing...and I might crawl back into my bed in the motel room.  I'm sure glad I chose to skip the tent thing for this event.  Just dumb luck, but I'm glad I'm not trying to drip-dry my sleeping bag and everything else...or trying to find out where the tent ended up when the wind stopped.

*****************************************************************

That shows ya what I know.  Leslie Porterfield just made a coupla 150 mph runs and pronounced the course acceptable.  I'm gonna saddle up and get out there.

More news when I'm on the salt.

Thanks to those who confirmd the connection.

Here are a few fotos.

The view from Land's End shows puddles of water and some overcast, but not nearly what I'd expected.

I'll need some help on the 411 bike.  It sure looks like there's some relationship to the Burkland group.  I dunno anything more than that.

I talked to the guy with the Red Green-built Taurus.  Nice young guy.  He told me he built it so he'd have some room to sleep in the thing.  Looks more like a place to hide the bodies.  :)  He also said that he'd send me fotos when he gets it re-painted...this is the 2nd iteration of the pickup bed.  He says he's put over 120k miles on it that way.  The thing that made me laugh was when he said that he'd sealed the foam board by rolling Gorilla glue with a paint roller.  Hey...it's workin for him and it's a whole lot cheaper than a new F-350.

I think the last foto is of Richard Assen from "down under."  I'm not sure tho.  Where I'm parked at the moment is right along the return road, so I get to see everybody coming back this way.

They're running AMA rules, so when a bike qualifies for a record, he/she's held at the mountain end of the course and when there are 3 or 4 parked there, they run 'em back in the opposite direction.

Lastly, the sun just came out and it's gonna get real muggy for a bit...but it'll dry the salt surface.

More later.

Both courses are good ... Leslie was the traction tester and ran both courses. International is short course only. Course surface is good. Doesnt seem any different then yesterday but when you get off the course the surface is rough riding.

An Android is a type of Smart Phone.  I also have an AT&T air card, but I left it in the motel room.  This is the backup connection.  Neither one is real fast or real stable...but they work.

Ray,

411 Bike is the right color for the Burkland's crew.  Rex Svoboda is in the timer's stand along with Tom Burkland.  For the final word on it's provenance you could ask there.

Thanks, Wes.  I talked to the rider this afternoon.  He had no idea what "the Burklands" was.  Pure coincidence, apparently.

I've been on the phone ever since I got back to the motel.  I'm a-gonna post a few fotos now.

Ohh...one of the high points of the day was meeting that "Kansas Badman" Max Lambky.  His pilot, Hartmut, will be riding tomorrow.  They're running on an open record, but have very high aspirations.  They ran 178 in 1st gear (and that was only at 5 grand with a 6500 limit.)  I think they can do it.

Ok.  It was a long afternoon and a lotta time spent on the phone when I got back to the motel.  I was able to edit fotos while talking on the phone, but my multi-tasking skills aren't sufficient to write posts on the forum while on the phone.

So.  Here are some shots starting about 4 hours ago.

With the AMA return run rules ya get 'em coming and going....

At the pre-staging area for the Mountain course (the other one is being called the International Course) was the Oasis Lounge, complete with palm tree and flamingo.  They were startin to wilt a bit after the sun came out.

There were plenty of bikes and riders waitin for a chance to leave pre-stage and get on the course.  Note the 1st Cavalry graphic on the Buell.  Right On!

Potluck Motorsports brought a "Harley-Busa" to run in the APS/AG class.  Class act.

When I went to the Mtn Course Staging, there was a guy with a Yamaha RZ-350 (Kenny Roberts signature edition.)  I've heard some stories about Roberts and a bike like that and some hijinx on a beach in a galaxy far away, but I won't name any names.

There was quite a wait as the returns were coming back...which wasn't helped by riders stopping on the course, crossing a hot course, turning out the wrong way...must be the phase of the moon or something.

While we waited, I got some shots of Bo Miller's pop-rivet special.  I suggested that he do like the Brazilian stock car team did a week ago and cover it all with clear packing tape to smooth it out.

I wanna see what it looks like in the ayem.

And then there were two.  The clock struck 7 (six escaped with minor injuries) and the course was closed.  These two will run first in the morning.  And I'll run to bed right about now.

G'nite.

Quick check in:

I can confirm Joe's report about the AMA/FIM issue with oit bikes.  I don't think this guy is a guilty one, but they seem pretty serious about it.

I talked with Max Lambky's team who said they'd been running way too rich and were reloading for another run in a coupla hours.  Good luck to 'em!  Here's a shot of the dual Vincent motors.

Tom Mellor's Triumph Triple blew a head gasket in a big way...and took out 2 of the head studs at the same time.  They're trying to fix it and run again.  More good luck wishes.

The Mtn course had been running record returns for quite a while.  A few minutes ago they finished up and release a whle buncha bikes from pre-staging, where I'm parked at the moment.  It was sorta like the Oklahoma land rush.  I wish I'd had the camera ready and not been transferring files to the computer.  It woulda made a kool shot to get the variety of bikes heading out.  From small cafe racers to partial streamlined to a Harley bagger with ape-hanger bars.

Streamlining is limited to seat/tail section and windshield/fairing.
With the rider in the racing position, the rider must be able to be

How does #85 with the roll bar run in APS?

Quote
Streamlining is limited to seat/tail section and windshield/fairing.
With the rider in the racing position, the rider must be able to be
seen (hands and arms excluded) entirely from either side.
They have run it the last few years for time only. It is giving them some seat time while they work on another project that will be a full streamliner.

Max's sidecar liner just made a pass, but it didn't sound good as it went by the 3 and the laundry got tossed out before it went thru the measured mile and turned out.  More info as I get it.

Meanwhile, here are some more fotos of a Confederate bike as it starts up, heads for the line and launches.

DAMMMIT TO HELLL!!!  Craig's sidecar liner just went by with absolutely zero indication on any frikkin radio.  I've waited for 2 hours to get a shot of it and it's gone down course.  But the support truck just came by honking and waving...and he ran a 181.  I guess I'll wait for a record return.

Yes, it's gettin late and I'm gettin wore out and cranky.

Ray, you are all spoiled at speed week as I try to keep everyone informed to whats going on with three courses and they can't even announce whats current on any thing. That really sucks. Announcing is a huge part of the event. It means a lot to the other racers and the general public. Thanks for you and Joe for your inputs, at least we get something.

I think the existing record for FIM was 167 or so?

LOL!!!  Take it easy on the extremities...ya might need 'em later.  :)

Hope things were minor with the liner.  We'll all be here in the ayem.

They just announced that they've "run 350 bikes through the course today."  I guess that means 350 timed runs made...not too bad, all in all.

The primary breather line came loose, blowing oil on the slider clutch.  The clutch slipped due to oil, and heated up, loosening the outer diameter of the clutch seal to shaft.  It worked it's way out, throwing additional oil on the clutch.  All repairs have been made.  At the 5 mile, side winds of 8 mph blew Hartmut off course.  He ran the timed mile to the left of the traps.  No time given.

We'll be running tomorrow morning.

The rider of the #426 bike needed a bit of a bump start...it was a kinda difficult to get goin.  But once it was runnin, it did just fine.

I know -- here on the forum!  Of course.  How could we forget?

Belen Wagner is quite a tall woman.  But then I'm a short guy, so most women look tall to me.  She got going after a bit of a push start from her crew.

The young lady in the yellow/black leathers (Karena Markham) waited patiently for one heck of a long time...but she was delighted to be one of the first to run in the morning air tomorrow.  Her top speed so far has been 58 mph.  Not bad for something sold in scooter shops.  She'd be tickled pink (or yellow) with a 60 mph run.

That's it for tonite.  I'm gonna take my insanity defense and put it to bed.

SO far my good friend,Greg Watters has fastest passes, yesterday ran 209 on short course after rain closed the long one. Geared too high. Today ran 218 on his 750,spinning through the lack of traction in the measured mile.
All speeds are down at this meet.
I ran a 189 on the naked 750,spinning quite a bit.
And no tire issues on either of our bikes running z rated street tires!

Quick update as I fight the Android tethering internet connection.  We ran the wheel packing convoy through 7 miles of the International course.  That went smoothly.  Then the mandatory rider's meeting...basically what most folks figgered, emphasizing the restrictions on pit bikes.

Then bikes were released to wherever they were supposed to be ans timed runs commenced.  Karena Markham was the first on the Int'l course on her little scooter-like thing.  I didn't get a speed, but I'll ask around.  Several other bikes that were "leftovers" from yesterday made their runs and then the Motoczysz electric bike made a run.  Went smoothly and I heaard a speed of 151 mph.  That thing is way too quiet.

Fotos soon.

Really... Check the Tire Topic's... Or Catch up on "the" topic...  Better yet get a good handling bike that goes 260 mph plus then throw a car tire on it and you ride it..  Then you will have your answer for yourself. You can't do this stuff overnight, well I can't anyway!    :-D

It's been a long day, and I haven't posted a whole lot...but there are a lotta stories to tell.  One's about some guy from Texas who managed to get his truck stuck in the mud near the foot of the mountains while chasin after 50 caliber shell casings...and had to be helped out the "armstrong" way by a coupla guys from Colorado, a guy and a young lady from the NorthWest and 3 Danes.  I ain't gonna mention any names, but you all know who you are.  Ya done right good.

Then there's just one photo with this post.  4 (or maybe 5) Vincents: 3 of which set records and one with the fastest sidecar pass all gathered together for a photo op.

I was here for the filming of World's Fastest Indian when the Challenger, the Pumpkinseed (Golden Commode) and the Flying Caduceus were all lined up for a photo op.  There were more people flocking to see the Vincents today.  Situation might be a little different, but there was a hell of a lotta enthusiasm in the Vincent camp.

I'm outta here until I get back to the motel.

.....that doesnt exactly explain why other bikes with 1/3 to 1/2 the hp
spin the tire....for long periods of time...

Back in the hotel from racing today. I did a 193 return run on the short course and believe me that was a handful. There was an 11 mph cross/headwind and I was fishtailing off and on all the way. The course looks good, but is extremely slippery. The weather is great. Cool and clear. Only 1/2 more day of racing left and I don't think there will be real big speeds. I heard a Suzuki 750 went 229 and that is amazing for the conditions.

For this year I made all new bodywork, but that did not help considering the lack of traction. I had a flat tire - a racing BT-003 that only lasted 6 runs. Don't know what happened to it, the tread and carcass look good- no blistering or tread separation. I switched to my trusted DOT BT-003 that has lasted 4 seasons now and it holds up great with dozens of over 200 mph runs. I would like to blame it on the fact that the racing tire is a non-DOT with no manufacturing standards, but just don't know. I DO know I have never had a problem using Z rated tires.

Just returned from Bonneville after running my 04 Dyna, 190hp/200 plus torque at minimum boost and experienced zero traction issues while destroying a rear 17" spoked wheel.
Traction was not an issue, while the Hardtailz tuned 124" Aerocharged motor ran flawlessly!

spot on........

Greg could ride half cut sitting backwards on the bike if he had to, but he didn't ..He would also be the last person to hold up what he'd done in others faces, because it'd be easy to be modest if he was on a 1650...but he ain't....... he is one of the nicest blokes you'll ever meet......... that's an astonishing speed ....if they can persuade Brett de Stoop to go with them next year it'll be one hail of a pit.......

Hartmut took it to 5500 in low 188 mph shifted into second slider clutch didn't have enough finger weight to handle the power and started to slip. Shifted to high to save the clutch went through the mile at 3500 for a 198 run. The liner is in impound on an open record. Adding finger weights and backing off clutch springs. Engines running great looking for a very fast return.

Words are insufficient to describe my frustration with Motorola Cliq Android phones, T-mobile's data service and Easy-Tether's hack software.  It's taken me WAY too long to get connected...and I have no idea whether it'll stay, so I'm gonna add a coupla otos, then I'm headin home.

First is a shot of Max's liner leaving the line on the slipping clutch run...go get 'em on the return, guys!!!

Second is Craig's sidecar streamliner in Impound.  He qualified 16 mph over his existing record.  For numerous reasons, I never got a shot of him at speed.  Just a part of the day's frustrations.

I'm headed home so I can shoot the Cycle fest at Miller's this weekend,  I know we'll see a coupla sidehack racers there who competed here.

I'm on the road before anything else goes wrong.

Lambky Liner update. The liner is done for this year. The only glitch this year was the clutch. The three plate slider clutch is not adequate to hold the torque being generated. Clutch holds and pulls strong in low gear, but after shifting to second, the clutch no longer holds. The only option is to take the liner home and build a longer jackshaft to accept more clutch plates. At least we went fast enough to collect Bakkers prize money.
Congrats to Craig on his record.

I don't know of any lodging facility that offers hard wiring for the internet.  A few of the non-casinos have wi-fi available, as does the West Wendover Welcome Center.  There are probably other "hot spots" in town.  I don't know who might be willing to let you plug into their cable or whatever, but there might be someone.  How about calling Kerri or Linda at the Welcome Center and posing the question to one of them?  They'd likely be able to get you a better idea.  Here're the phone numbers:  Tel:   (775) 664-3138 or
toll free:  866-299-2489

I put videos on Photobucket and then post the link.  It requires, of course, that you can be online out on the salt (I am so endowed).  Uploading the video doesn't take more than a minute, usually (YRMV), so it's not too cumbersome.

Jon (who, with Nancy, will be there for the Shootout).  Ask Mike Cook if you can buy one of the customized coffee mugs that we've made for him for the event.

Heading back to Long Island and the fun 45 hour drive. To update, the staff at Bub's was outstanding. Rex Svoboda ran the tower and it went exceptionally well. The team that worked International course - short start - mile 3 was really good. I was able to get names yesterday ( I am getting better at this ) ; Dalton (Dad) Collier, Cathy (Mom) Collier, Bob Collier (son) - Starter and last but not least a real gentleman  Nick Roberts. No rider left mile 3 without a personal briefing from them. Their enthusiasm was obvious and order was the rule. The chief of Pre-stage ran a great show, thank you Chad.  He maintained order and everyone was treated fairly. Can't say enough good things about Pre-stage.  Dennis Manning was policing the course constantly. Great event.

If you stay at the felonious Nugget, you get less than what you pay for.
Just don't eat the food or drink the water. :-D :-D

Rumor has it that Nugget, and now Red Garter, are owned by a rather infamous US Senator and his brother, and their attitude is "take the money and run", then when that herd of cattle is milked dry, go to something else.

Ray said bfst at the garter was tolerable; we had dinner there one night, and put it on my "no-mas" list.

We have a good food vendor for World of Speed; Enola Gay Cafe.
Seems like a decent dude.

Dude i could tell you 4 good stories of how the Nugget attempted to mis charge our credit cards... the greatest one was last year 09 when they hit my card for $1200! i was staying at the montego!!!! when we went over to have a word with them they claimed i was staying in the room and i made the reservation in Nov..... (get this) '07!!!!!! WTF!!! yeah we had to call the police because the desk couldn't and wouldn't do anything about refunding the fraudulent charge cuz "the manager wasn't there" its funny after we called the police to have the desk staff arrested for conspiracy to commit fraud the manager showed up and refunded immediately.... this year on the "double charge" it took them almost a day to get the hold lifted..... I know of others they have screwed..... but that Lithuanian girl Gedre' at the front desk sure was hot.....

Kent, when I made my reservations for '11 speed week before I left this year I booked an extra room for you since you ask me every year for extra rooms.  Might have one more if some the suspects don't show up. Tony

Way yo go, Kent!  I love the idea of callin the kops in a situation like this.  Toadly Ossum!!

Yes, the Former Super 8, now "America's Finest"...whatever...is ok.  And Beth is a friend of Freud's.  I happened to be on the phone with him when I walked in and let 'em chat on speaker phone for a bit.  They're good people in my experience.  Unfortunately, they don't have the kind of internet access Dick Lague needed.  I gave it a shot, but it didn't work.

Red Garter dinner fare: forget it.  Breakfast is ok. The Enola Gay Cafe may have a sit-down place in town sooner or later.  It was kinda unclear about their plans.  Far as I'm concerned, the Salt Flats Cafe is the best place to eat, but then I'm not a restaurant reviewer...and as much as I like their Mexican food, I don't think I'd want it as a steady diet.

C ya at WoS.

A coupla more fotos as I go thru my stash.

BUB hisself.  He told me to get an extra-wide angle lens to shoot him but that wasn't necessary.  Just his pleasant, smiling self.

And the only speed shot I got of Peg Leg Craig's sidecar liner.

With that, I'm off to sleep so I can get up bright and early to head out to Tooele for the "Cycle Fest" vintage motorcycle and sidecar event.  A lotta folks who ran at the BUB will be there.

Made it home last night. Was hoping to hit some rain to wash off the salt but no luck.  Time to get the pressure washer out!!

Marcello at the Salt Flats Cafe is the best!  They only make Menudo on certaion days and they run out around 11am each day.  My wife requested if he could save us  a bowl on Thursday and he was nice enough to save one just for her when we showed up around 4pm.  We got  the stink eye from other local customer who also wanted a bowl and he told them it was just for her!!!  I think we ate there 5 dinners and 3 breakfasts!!

The crew at International mile 3 is definately top notch!!  Thanks to all!!!

Home now,got most stuff unloaded and cleaning will begin. Kim and Greg are enjoying their newfound fame and fortune and headed to Miller for the weekend.
Will have the motor out and apart in a flash to see what was hurt, but have spare motors ready to go for both bikes if needed.
Big kudos to all the workers--esp Bob,what a guy!!-- and a thank you to Dennis for a great event.

I am home now and unpacking. We got 4 records with two bikes and it was not easy. Lots of electrical, mechanical, and tire gremlins. In addition to the normal problems we face each year, the meet was made especially unpleasant by one little general AMA official. Anyone else feel picked on by that guy? I won't complain too much but suffice to say that that particular AMA official knew almost nothing about motorcycles and insisted on showing it.

In spite of spending $15 in quarters at the Wendover car wash, I still must have brought home 50 pounds of salt. WHY can't the organizers arrange to have vehicle cleaning ON THE SALT. I want it to stay there. I don't want to bring it home. If Save The Salt wants to really save the salt, they have to start there.

Thanks to everyone there at Bub, from Dennis on down. The volunteers were great and I appreciate them. Especially the great guys in tech and impound and the course workers making sure the riders had water and went on their way as quickly as possible. The 3 mile guys even had cookies everytime we landed there!

I Have 4 lbs already and a lot more to come ... I would like to thank Ken Sailant, Kenny Sailant, Curtis Smith, Drew Gatewood from the AMA ... The aforementioned mentioned Intl 3 mile short start crew (Colliers and Roberts) ... 7 mile shut down crew with the outhouse flamingos and picket fence (wish I had their names / the guys from Phoenix)  ... Chad at Pre Stage ... Rex in the tower ... Dennis, his team and of course Delvene and her top hand Linnea ... every year this event gets better and better ... Only 51 weeks until next year.

Don't worry John (like you have too...). Your record was not touched by me. We got all open records 1650 APS-BG, 1650 APS-BF, 1000 APS-BG and 1000 APS-BF.

Also, my comments above about the AMA official had nothing to do with Drew Gatewood or any other volunteer. All the volunteers were wonderful and knew their stuff and we love them for what they do.

The Black Lightning had a really good event, even though no records were set.  The bike is alive and we left it in Wendover for the WoS.  The clutch oil down was the only major issue of the meet.  We launched 5 times... the first for 2 miles, couldn't get the bike to shift... next a 205 that we thought was a little fat.. the third, after new plugs and leaning 2 steps oiled the clutch (plug read showed way lean)... went fatter and the next run clutch slipped in 2nd, went 198... Last run after more lock weight still slipping, 178?.... Could have used the rain and wind delay days but a good event for the scooter.
Great job by 99% of the volunteers,  our only issue was being the only bike in the long course pre-stage and being held for an hour (while the winds were calm) so they could sort out the short course bike line from the day before.  I finally pissed the guy off, he told me if I wanted to make up my own rules we should just go on down to the 0  :| .... I thanked him and we left... Winds picked up just as we were about to start the motors.... we were ready to go and we waited at the 0 the remainder of the day.
Many many many thanks to Kurt at the 0 and Rex in the tower for trying to find us windows in the wind to run the last 2 days...
It was a great event again

Don,pretty sure I know who you mean.
Not sure if it was second or third day when the AMA tech guys came to our pit and told me that there had been concerns voiced about my tail section. Now they had passed on this on my entry, had me sit on bike and measured everywhere. They sat me back on bike and told me that because my hips were inside a line drawn from tailsection to seat area it was considered an aerodynamic advantage. My response was--so if I had a bigger but it would have been legal. The answer was --probably. Now how ridiculous is that!!!!! They were sure lucky both my return runs were horrible because if I had had a record denied I would have lost it!

AT the riders meeting, Dennis told the riders to clean off the salt on the flats ... I thought he was half joking but I can see that I have about 10 lbs under my truck ... multiply that times the number of vehicles annually that attend events .... guessing a thousand vehicles and that is 10,000 lbs annually carted off ... or 5 tons ... I was able to recover 7 lbs from under the truck ...
Title: Re: BUB Updates

I  know this might be symbolic but how would people feel if we all brought at least a 25 lb bag of salt with us to every event and at the end of the meet somebody went out with a truck and  emptied the bags  out the back of the truck. Seems like we should at least try to "give back" at least as much salt as we are taking off on our vehicles.

My oldest son told me about the A-10 Warthogs that flew over the meet.  He is in the Marines.  They call for air support and they describe the target.  The warthogs show up if enemy armor (tanks, etc) are the problem.  The main Warthog weapon is a cannon that shoots depleted uranium bullets.  They can go through the armor of most tanks.

These planes helped to keep the cold war cold, according to my son.  The Soviet's main offensive force was lots of armor and the Warthogs were a threat to it.  The planes had a calming effect on the Russian military.

While stranded at the Montego I discovered that the new second floor (east) wing has a couple of tables by the door that are right by the router for their wi-fi. I was able to log on easily and had a solid signal on my MacBook Pro. Just go up the stairs to the right of the front doors and look right inside the doors to your left to find it.

Two times I saw it someone  just drove past everyone right to the front of the line. The third time I didn't see the truck drive up. All times the truck appeared it was parked outside the normal line. Every time we got in line they wanted to know if my bike was with me. That told me there was no saving a place in line.

Larry,
You have to remember she runs the long course and I never saw a line waiting for the long course. Every bike that was running the long course would just be waved right through and sent to the starting line.  Now if she was given preference to go to the short course then we have a problem but I never saw Leslie running the short course?

Did you see her cut in line to go to the short course?  Or was it for the long course?

It is not so secret secret that if you want to get the most runs in  at Bubs you need a bike that can go over 175mph so you can use the long course.
Title: Re: BUB Updates
Post by: ol38y on September 13, 2010, 11:52:25 PM
Agreed she would be running the long course but the truck with her bikes always pulled alongside the short course line. The long course line was on the other side of pre-staging.

If I am not mistaken I believe they told everyone to only use the one line after about  the 2nd day.   I know this happened with the 2 short course lines for ridden bikes.   On day 1  you could pick either mtn or Intl course for bikes that were ridden to the starting lines.  But on Tuesday I think it was they only had 1 line for the short course and the workers decided which course you would be sent to.  I believe it  was AMA Ken who implemeted this rule.  I did not see any towed bikes using the other side to go to long course after the first day or so.   Everybody came around on the left side.  And even if they were supposed tto go to the other side what does it matter?   She was not cutting in front of other bikes waiting to go to the long course.  Short course bikes are an entirely different list.

We both need bikes that can go faster than 175 mph so we can go long course!!!

I missed being there as well, hearing that Greg beat bikes that were nearly triple in engine size and also the streamliners that attended was great, I did get to present him with his El Mirage 200 mph Cap for his great Run at El Mirage of 201 mph yesterday.

I hope to be back out with the new bike however until I have a race bike rather than a lightly modded street bike I will not race my own bikes at Bonneville.  Now that we are running very fast speeds at El Mirage it is easier to not go to Bonneville when El Mirage is 1.5-2 hours away and only a one day event...next time I come by I will wave again..

In Oregon the dirt bike club I belong to held enduros and scrambles in the hills.  It rains here a lot and on the slick and muddy courses the overall winners were almost always on smaller bikes.  Big bikes won the races when it was dry.  Greg did well on the 750 and that could be expected.  The less powerful bike with a very skilled rider could get better traction on the less than perfect salt we raced upon.

We got in 10 runs and weren't really even trying.  Didn't run at all on Monday by our choice and tore down on Wednesday taking our sweet time.

It was very easy to get 3 runs in per day if you wanted to or more.

I did most of the posts on Wednesday. My brother and nephew Cliff had to get back to New York Tuesday evening for school. Cliff is a high school student and Tom is a professor at Dowling College. Tom returned on Thursday and made 5 runs. I remapped the Buell FI and changed carburetors on the red bike and the rest of Wednesday I was a spectator/reporter ... I think Tom made 15 runs with the Buell. We got it to 131 mph but Klockwerks took their 126 record to 136 so close but no cigar.

Eye Dr recommended eye drops due to a dry eye. Wrong. seems the retina was detaching.
Last wednesday spent over 2 hours on the operating table getting a tune up on my left eye. seems to be healing rapidly. patch came off yesterday morning with a healthy progress report.
riding soon.
Replaced the rear spoke wheel with a 17" Duece mag and W- Rated Avon Tyres, preparing for ElMirage.
Just a slight bump in the road.
