Title: automatic transmission bell housing requirements
Post by: DKrause615 on April 23, 2010, 10:02:31 PM
I have an automatic transmission car with a SFI 29.1 flex plate, a
SFI 4.1 steel transmission shield, and an SFI 30.1 bell housing.  The bell
housing is made for racing, but is a 1" thick aluminum unit with a SFI 30.1
sticker.  It appears from reading rule 3.0 is that automatic
transmission cars do not require the 1/4" steel bell housing.

Bottom line, do auto trans cars with a flexplate and no clutch still require the 1/4" steel bell housing?

i have a similar unit that I use with no TQ converter and no shield on the bell housing.

So, now I am confused.   :?

If I have a SFI 29.1 Flexplate and a SFI 4.1 Steel Shield, I don't need a 30.1 Bell Housing

AND

If I have a 29.1 Flexplate and a 30.1 Bell Housing, I don't need a Steel Shield?

Is that right.  They are exclusive, one of the other, but not both, with regards to the Bell Housing and Steel Shield.

Obviously, AT only.

Correct, you would not need the steel shield with that bellhousing and flex plate. (as the rules had been told to me)

You will need your fuel line protected in the area that passes by the bellhousing and flex plate. (run it through some heavy wall tubing)

Thank you for the reply's.  I believe that I will be OK with the SFI 30.1 bellhousing, however I recently discovered that a universal SFI 4.1 trans blanket can be purchased from Summit for just $90.  For that kind of money, why take a chance.  I'll wrap the blanket around it as well.

Good idea using the blanket as well, especially if your turning a lot of RPM's
