Well, that didn't work. Photobucket isn't working the right way, it seems, so I'll try to get those photos to load using some other method. I took 'em in pretty big file size, though -- can't get 'em to load directly. I'll think and see what I can do for you. Dang -- decent photos (even if I did take them myself).
Anyway, there are lots of cars this year for the Hot Rod Magazine Top Speed Challenge - Maxton April event. Lots of bikes, too -- but about twice as many cars are pre-registered as are bikes. I'll see what more I can do and get back here in a while.
..... Crap. The computer won't let me paste into this panel. I'll have to think for a while -- and will, if nothing else, take a batch more tomorrow with smaller file size - so you can see 'em some way. In the meantime -- at lest go take a look at this album on Photobucket:
http://s263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/Maxton%20April%202010/
yeah, sure, now that I told you I feel badly because it won't work -- now it will.
It's bedtime -- I'll make a run on the bike in the morning and get back here with some more stuff for you. Lemme know if you can't see 'em on the photobucket album. Here's one, anyway. . .
It's my old nitrous bike without the front bodywork. I'll ride it this way tomorrow -- just for some fun. Ah, it's been about four and a half years.
And finally:

Came through just fine up here. Thanks for all the effort, taking a lot of shake out of the speed fix DT's I picked up from being AWOL this meet.

Okay, we'll start with the good news. The weather is great and things are dandy -- about 60F and 10-12mph headwind. NMo clouds -- just absolutely dandy. We're running slow runs the first time -- Keith insisted we all take it a bit easy to see the work that's been done on the track since last October's event. Sure enough -- the white line is brighter and wider and fine and easy to follow, and the clear lane is wide, and the long shutdown is way wider and clean and things are pretty good.
So Dean Sabat made a 197 "easy run -- one of the fastest I've hearcd so far. Todd told me to make a fourth-gear only run -- just for data. The bike felt fine -- and sure enough, redline in fourth gear got me about 1 1/4 mph on the old record. Bonneville gears on a short track -- that's what happens.
We're in a short shut down time here for Saturday rookie orientation, so I'll get some photos put on the site.

-
The Superbird (no, that isn't right, is it? What'd they call the Dodge version?) just ran a 128++ license pass. Sounds nice., Then a circle track car did a 169 with a righteous roar. Ah, it's good to be back at the race track, boys and girls.

Great pix, Maxton has an awesome variety

" And finally".............tell me more about that Honda sidecar........is it a "Flexe" I can only see 2 sidecar mounts.......Interesting........

Let's see -- Shane ran a 242, Josh Owen a 177 (4th gear on Debbie's naked bike). I'll getcha some more vehicles and speeds. Here are some photos:

I'll get some speeds for vehicles -- will be back in a while. Gonna make another run, too -- the wind has died down nicely - the flag is just hangin' there.
-
Bob, I'll try to get you some closeups. I know he's run 109 without the "chair" -- ran a 107 earlier today.
-
Mike Reichen -- "Onlyafour" on the Forum - just ran a 237 in his little (?!) car. It's the track record for a car.

Done for today -=- at least Nancy and I are done. We're back to rinse a bunch of track dust - and get ready to go to the Banquet in less than an hour.
First of all -- here are two of the folks we hear about but don't often get to see. Donna Timney is on the right, Tonya Turk on the left. They're the "Donya" pair that run this whole dang thing -- don't let Keith or Joe tell you anything else.
Okay, now that the ladies have had their moment in the sun -- I thank them for being kind enough to register the two records I set today. I bumped this morning's 176.75 to a 182.4 this afternoon. Cool.
And here are a few more cars -- mostly spectators, I think. But boyoboy were there lots of spectators this event. I don't remember ever seeing this many. It's a wonderful turnout.

I don't think this car is racing this month -- but then, I have been known to be wrong. That happened the one time I thought I had made a mistake.
As for runs -- Debbie says she'll get me a run log to post -- but not 'til after the event ends tomorrow afternoon. Please be patient and wait for a while -- then we'll have all of the speeds for the entire weekend.
No, I don't know who's leading the Hot Rod Magazine Top Speed Challenge classes right now -- maybe will find out for you tonight at the banquet.
Later --
(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/Maxton%20April%202010/IMG_1235.jpg)
PS Still promise to find out about that rig with the 750 Honda, Bob.
-
WOW, what a day for racing. We had a great time and taking the track Record with Reichens evo was a great day. We are gonna let the car sit unless someone bumps that number tomorrow.
CONGRATS MIKE! You just made all the yelling work in the pits for the past 3 years worth it man.
And if anyone wants to help celebrate we will be at Champs for drinks tonight!
-
Hey, hey, hey. The banquet's over and we're about to get horizontal for the night -- but here's the link to the Photobucket site where I've stashed the photos I took.
Highlights: Scott Griswold was given the John Beckett Memorial Award for being the most important guy at the ECTA for the recent past (I'm paraphrasing, but he sure did deserve it. Scott's wearing a blue shirt and holding the crystal engraved trophy.
Tom Schaeffer won the motorcycle points award -- with Todd Dross getting it to share since Todd did lots of the riding for Tom last year when Tom had medical reasons for not being able to ride at some of the events. And Ed Brace won the car points award - for the second year in a row. I'll get the other information to you later -- gotta get some sack time now. Here's that link - hope it works. I'll edit so you get to see the Maxton April 2010 album - only.

Jon, good job, looking forward to the results tomorrow.

Exciting day for bikes as the battle continues for open wheel supremacy. Both Bill Warner and Shane Stubbs overcame difficulties to post a speed of 257 MPH on their turbo Busas. The Maxton record of 260 and the Texas record of 261 are within sight. You know the pressure will be on tomorrow. Stay turned. LSL
-
SSS,
Big thanks for the latest info and pics of the banquet, effort really appreciated here.

Congratulations to Team Guthrie and rider Shane Stubbs for a new motorcycle mile record of 264.375 MPH :-o set at Maxton this morning. LSL
-
WOW - Congratulations!
-
Go Shane
How's Bill running today?
-
Larry, you're one fast guy -- beat me to the keyboard. Yeah, 264 3/8 is not all that shabby for a one-mile paved course. . .hey? There've been some fast runs today -- a new car track record of 240++. Remember -- Debbie says she'll get run logs for the event - most likely late tonight, maybe in the morning.
Bob, the fellow with the 750 Honda is running without the outfit today -- but did a best of 106 (that's what he told me) with it attached. It's home-built, he says -- two points to hold it to the bike plus a stabiliser bar. He said he'd give me his email addy later - in case you really want to learn more about the rig.
Bill Warner has been making passes -- and fast ones - but
272.340 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! just now. WOWOWOWOW!!
Bill's in impound now -- and I got a few photos. Gimme a minute and I'll post them, too.
And yes, someone's already asked -- what was Joe Amo's fast mile last year at WoS? 272. what? Thanks.

Okay -- let's see if Shane can up the ante now.
-
 BILL!!!!!!!
-
i think AMO was 272.610
-
Yes, I know there's a complete universe of difference between Joe at Bonneville and Bill here at Maxton - so please, folks -- I'm just the messenger. But the inevitable questions will arise -- might as well get the data correct.
On another subject -- my bike is in the trailer now. Three runs -- upped the record each time. This last one put it at 185 and some nice change -- and was the most fun of the weekend. Each run was good -- each was more fun than the run before. I'm a happy guy today. Nancy got video, even -- even when I followed Todd's instructions and pinned the throttle in second. Lit up the tire just dandy in second -- I hear Todd mumbled "Why does he do that? I tell him to go WFO -- he does. Why?"
Man, what a fun weekend.
-
Okay -- bike 1105 is on the course. That's Shane Stubbs again. Let's see -- blue smoke, hurt the motor, slowed through the traps. Oh, well, ain't this racin' fun?
-

First, I want to congratulate Shane Stubbs. 264 mph is a big step above the long-standing track record. I'd hate to see this accomplishment get lost in the shuffle!!
Secondly, what an amazing acomplishement by Bill. It makes you wonder just how high the bar may be set by season's end? :-o 250 mph ain't what it used to be...
Congrats to all for a safe and very fast weekend!
Shane (The Slower One)
-
My hat is off to Shane and Bill! Bill is a bad man!
-
Bill Warner is THE TRUTH! Mega congrats!
-
So the event is ended -- early, in fact. Nancy is driving us north on 220 -- and I'll tell you that about 12.40 this afternoon is when Shane Stubbs was making a pass -- and hurt the motor bad enough that the resulting oildown was adjudicated to need more time to clean up -- than was left 'til the 2PM scheduled end of the event. So it ended with a boom/puff -- not another record speed.
Lots of good runs, though -- and we'll have more as the next day or two goes past and I get the winners of the Hot Rod Top Speed Challenge and the other racers. I do think that the Waddell Brothers red Mazda earned the gentlemen another jacket, though. We'll letcha know when I find out for sure.
-
Way to go Bill!!! 272mph is truely amazing! Congrats my friend!

He has had 2 or s prior runs ay 198 and 199, Saturday proved to be hos day to join the 200 Club.
Any more details on the pushrod? That is a big #....

Charles,
How did you do?
-
Charles,
How did you do?
Well my first run Saturday was a total screw up on my part. In October I ran with MT ET Street Radials and it hooked kinda OK at the start but was "greasy" at the finish and in shut down, so for this meet I switched to Z Rated BFG G Force Sports (that match my fronts). So on the first run I took off with the stick in second blazed the tires shifted to third, bogged, back to second blazed the tires again, then to neutral, then to third, then it got straight in the groove and ended up with a 138.xxxx... so I went back to the pits,,, thought about how crappy I drove and headed back to the start,,, to think about it and clear my mind...the second run was picture perfect (except for the loss of adhesion ,, aka long burn out). hooked around the 1/4 and was charging to the end for the VICKY's best ever 152.85972.. It was a good pass.
Then today,, driving down to the start line...about 25mph,,, I hit the brake pedal,,, and it went to floor,, NO BRAKES...
So no runs for me today... but the 152.8 from Saturday made the weekend successful
Charles

The April meet was great! The weather, reconnecting with friends and the racing was top notch.
The best part of the whole weekend was standing near the finish line when Bill Warner made his pass at 272mph!! WOW, I still get goose bumps when I think about what that turbo Busa sounded like when it went past.

264 is wild, but Bill - 272! That fairing must work! Fantastic run!
And what a great photo in the traps! I don't know how it turned out so clear but it's just great!
Both you guys ARE coming to Loring again, right?
-
Not only was Bill's speed incredible, he hit more than one cone. Four cones down, one trashed, and two were about 40 off the track. We picked up probably 30-40 pieces of fiberglass including about 1/3 of the front fender and he stayed up! Spectacular riding.
-
Thanks everyone.

I told Keith I was going to move those cones one way or another :-D
I almost missed them, but was going to clip one on the edge, so I pointed the bike at it and ran it straight over. Log shows I hit the cone at 167mph. My fault, my timing was off for the corner. Still wish the cones weren't there.
A cone to a bike is like a telephone pole to a car.

I would like to add congratulations to Team Guthrie for an outstanding, if disappointing, weekend and comment on Shane's performance. While the oil-down from the broken bike was too close to the end of the meet to clean up and restart, he did a superbe job of getting off the racing strip as soon as was safely possible and limit the "damage" to the course. While disappointed and frustrated as he surely was, Shane showed the upmost composure and more self control than I could ever muster in a similar situation. Thanks for being so nice at shutdown, not everyone can be.
-
YOUR THE MAN BILL!
-
I was sitting there in long shutdown loading up my chute and thought you were about to go off into the field! Tough getting that thing stopped at that kind of speed I bet!

Congrats to Bill Warner, the fastest record holding two wheeler anywhere...

Bill fabricated the fairing and tail with no previous fiberglas experience. It came out quite well but due to a 167mph cone dance in shutdown he will have to redo his lower. Also Mark DeLuca at 238 is the lone Naked bike on the top 20 list (Steve Knecum did go 248 at Loring). LSL

Larry gave the guidance and I did the resin and fiberglass mods. The fairings started out as Walter Kudron's old Catalyst bodywork and there is very little of that original fiberglass left, mostly the top nose peace is theirs. No molds, all hand layed. I am better at it now then when I started, but still learning. John Bullock and Jason Gennaro helped with materials and labor also.
The tail is not fancy, but with our rules(ECTA) thats all that can be done.

Slipped out of bold face. Remember, folks, his utterances are VERY IMPORTANT!
Stan
Thats for sure. I have learned a lot from Scott over the years.
And I remember NEVER talking to DaveO without a pad and pencil! Commuta_Busa got me started because he used to do it too! Dave would almost always have a "spontaneous utterance" of great importance somewheres in the conversation.
Thanks for the kind words Scott, and big thanks to Larry for all his advice and expertise.
And big congratulations to Bill. He puts more time and effort into his program than you can imagine. 300 hours on just the fairings! Hard work pays off.

now lets get back to the accomplishments of those who raced last weekend at Maxton....
Kent

Hey, wait a minute. Nancy and I just got back to the house and I turn on the computer and I see Kent scolding others about good internet forum manners. This is a priceless moment, and Kent, I appreciate your efforts. As to what is going on with Scott and Bill -- I don't know -- but Glen's right -- take it outside and settle it and let the Forum here get back to racing.
If history is being modified -- I'd really rather not have it done on this site. I like to brag that this place is for racing and talking about it -- and bragging, too, when it's about an accomplishment worthy of note to all. I don't remember the run logs for Loring nor do I remember earlier posts (on this very thread) that did or didn't mention this or that rider.
All I want to do is get us back to land speed racing, not land speed pixxing contests. Bill and Scott are both worthy fellas - worthy of all sorts of bragging about their accomplishments. But when it comes to posting and then editing the posts down to nothing -- I get bad feelings that it's become personal.
Take it outdoors, gentlemen. Please.
-
Well said and thank you SSS,
I think this past weekend was full of great accomplishments. Not just the Hyper Speeds of Bill and Wild Bro Racing or Shane and Team G Racing... yes world class runs for both and deserving of all the accolades we can bestow on them, but.... Lot's of racers did well and either set records or had personal bests. Some where just glad to make it to our first event, some where glad to just have a safe pass and all where glad to have awesome weather and a safe event.
So, let's celebrate everone and the entire event as it was an outstanding success !!!
We have a lot to be thankful for, I for one am glad to be part of this site and this LSR sport, as the people make the difference.

When will we be able to see the run logs?

Run logs: Well, I know that Debbie said she'd be able to post them -- and I know she had to leave early to be at work on Monday (usually she takes an extra day to get the race stuff all sorted -- this time she didn't have that time). And I know that she says she's getting up at 4AM (ISHTA! - just thinking of that hour gives me a headache).
So -- I'll text her and ask if she's got them available and will let you know when I can get 'em posted. She used to have the keywords to put them on the site without having to babysit lameol' me - maybe she can still do that.
As for missing a good one -- well, yeah, I guess so. We have a great excuse, though -- driving home takes us across the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan -- and the population there is so sparse that there is spotty cellphone coverage at best - and our internet link uses the cellphone system - so I couldn't get online, I couldn't even make phone calls.
Glad things are back to copascetic. (Unm, the machine doesn't like how I spelled that. Anyone know the correct spelling?).
-
Jon,
That's a term from the 60's-70's... so you are dating yourself,,, but the correct spelling is Copasetic
Charles
-
copacetic
Glad the PC is over and it does not stand for politically correct. LOL.
Tom G.
PS. I read it all.
-
Charles, I think "dating onesself" is something that's reserved for Onanists.
-
I just got a text back from Debbie -- and sure enough, I was right -- she's swamped with stuff of life. She'll get the logs to us as soon as she can -- but you've gotta remember that she's not only dealing with Amanda, her daughter, and Josh Owens, Lauren (and Dave's) son that lives with them as he's working his way into being a necessary shop guy with Twin Jugs -- but Debbie has to put up with Todd. That'd be a challenge well beyond me!
Supper's on the table. Later. . .

Bike is up and running a few days late but you guys put on such a show that the sidelines weren't too bad a place to be. What a scene across from registration when Bill made that pass. No one recognized Bill's new fairing so Joe was asking for verification of both the speed and the bike number at the same time word was coming in about cones flying and that all was ok. That bike was flying and the sound it made was new to my ears. Congrats to all for your records and putting on a great show. Next time I plan to be part of it myself!
-
And oh yeah, the car guys ran pretty fast too. Has there ever been an event where both track records were broken? It also seems exceptional that both records were broken and then upped by a different competitor and not just the same person laying down a better run. Super event and thanks for all the entertainment.

Wow, I didn't even realize that until you wrote it, and I was there all weekend!
Very astute observation.

From the small bike world
A big Congratulations goes to Madcap racing . Jarl went booming down the track for the fastest Altered Partial streamlined 250 four stroke run ever 115 mph .And a personal best .Also without a fairing he went 112 mph to take the top Altered record.
Good Job

I know this forum is fairly bike-centric, but ...
What a great weekend we had, the pits were full with over 100 race teams and 1,100 spectators.
We also set two track records for cars ... Mike Riechen set a new track record at 237 mph and then it was topped, by Eric Yost in his Drag Week white 3rd Gen Firebird at 241 mph a short time later, which took the HRM Top Speed Challenge Super Street jacket !!
What a great weekend of racing !!
:-D
BTW - Tonya told me the run log would not import into the database, so Deb will need to work her magic and massage a few of the entries before it will be able to be imported.

Well, here goes my attempt to dump all semblance of modesty. I wrote this article and submitted it via the internet while we were heading home. I don't know how long the link will be viable, but give it a look. I show this stuff to you so you can maybe try to send your own stories to your own local newspaper. Our paper - the Marquette Mining Journal -- has a "virtual newsroom", and that's the way they receive articles from me. It makes it easy -- and the chances are far better of them getting the story correct if you write it yourself.
http://www.miningjournal.net/page/content.detail/id/542873.html?nav=5042
PS Sorry that this thread is "bike-centric" -- I know I need to get more car data in about each event, but when Nancy and I are racing as well as "reporting" -- well, there are the hours spent in the staging lines (when I otherwise would be gathering data on cars. I'll keep trying. . .

That 4-door Mitsubishi makes the mega-dollar supercars look not so super!

When it comes to Mike's car and having all the aerodynamics of a brick we found a great quote from Enzo Ferrari that fits well.
"Aerodynamics are for people who can't build engines."

Local News Papers ... I heard about those once, something like they were important and exsisted before Al Gore invented the internet. :-D

Congratulations also go to Eric and Dark Horse Racing with his now yellow Kawasaki Ninja 250cc twin 4 stroke. He spent the weekend ratcheting up the speed of a Modified Partially Streamlined record from 104 to 109mph. Great job adding to his record collection (not vinyl).
Also I posted a Maxton video of my Honda 250

Great weekend everyone.

What a great weekend it was !!! Congrats again Bill I forget there are so many sites to stop and say congrats!
We had a blast and will be back for more, Bill is a great person to race against we were constantly bumping each others mph until the Fat lady started singing. Bill posted an obvious huge 272 mph, will see what the Speed Gods have in store for us :-D
Even though our little 264mph wasn't enough to take home the prize it was something I've wanted since '05 when Lee moved the bar that high. To me back then that was Huge!! If you can't dream of one day being on top whats the point?
Even if this go round on top only last 38 minutes it was infact On Top  so for that I'm thankful to Team Guthrie for the opportunity and for that moment.
Also the whole ECTA organisation is just a great group of racers, friends and family what a great platform to share an accomplishment.
Great Job Team Wild Bill!
See you at track real soon

That's pretty cool having everyone sign the car. Those memories are forever, Take a lot of pictures of it and frame them.

How did Mike Meirele and Ed Safarik do with Mike's Truck?
Tom G.
-
Not sure how Mike's truck came out in the end but he had some really nice runs and I saw him at the record table at least once.
On the bike side - We should also mention Sam and Rob (darn if I can remember their last name). I know Sam bumped her record in the Little Bitty Displacement class (bike classes are a mystery to me) riding her Sears/Italian (maybe a Binelli?) bike, and I'm pretty sure Rob set a record or two on the 750 Honda sidecar bike.
Notice that SSS has been TOTALLY silent about losing his car record in E/CPRO to a vastly superior driver (that would be me) IN THE SAME CAR! Well that, and the dyno shop found 1/3 more HP. That bar is now a bit higher.
Enough harassment?
Dan

The Sharpie Nova belongs to the girl who was working record verification. I believe that most of the signatures came from power tour, but I know it gained more (including mine) over the weekend.

I think 137 before it ate the clutch :-(

She's Celeste Perris. Her Dad, David, was the heavy set guy in pre-stage. They were a real joy to have and they both did a GREAT job as volunteers - as did Walt. We'll take any or all of 'em when ever we can get them.

I know a guy who has run a turbo BBC Ferrari on the salt, and I have seen film of a pretty intresting ride, that would probabaly agree that a lot of Ferraris dont have much arero :-D

Tom,
We took 2 records, my nephew Sam Randolph upped his own record in F/BMMP to 137.570MPH
and I took the low hanging fruit E/BMMP at 137.161MPH. The clutch is toast, have to roll it on slow in third gear and nurse it, but we got 4 runs out of it. anybody got a used Tilton for a DSM?
The new Datsun pickup took my old F/PMP record from 2 years ago. they were a happy bunch.
with regard to the operation of the meet, It was the best I've ever seen, the Pre-staging on the access road, and limiting the number of cars at the end of the track really worked. Once you hit the lineup, you had to be ready to run, no standing around BS'ing with other racers. Plenty of volunteers checking belts and pins in pre-stage. Me likey...
Terry, sorry I missed ya when we left, we took a tour around and I didn't see ya?
-
I liked the setup also. For a crew of one it was hard to get food water.(run forest run) But now that I have it figured out the prestage on the road work's for me.
Once you get to the start line it is all business.
 As always the startline crew is the best .
-
Oh Lord, don't encourage them. They already need an XXL helmet, if you know what I mean.
Glad you guys like the early pre-staging. We'd been waiting until there was a back up then starting pre-stage but this time we planned to have David and another person in pre-stage at the start of the day and I agree that it worked out great. I'll try to schedule that way from now on.
Dan
 As always the startline crew is the best .
-
Great job Dark Horse, Madcap Racing, you guys are doing amazing speeds with small NA motors.
The volunteers were fantastic, thanks. I was sitting in prestage, overheated, and realized I hadn't had anything to drink in 2 hours. I knew I had another 45-60 min to go, and asked a volunteer for help. He walked me over to his truck and handed me an ice cold bottle of spring water, and I felt a hundred times better. One small example of the many many kindnesses of the volunteers.
-
Our thanks to the prestage idea and folks, too. No big difference in the amount of time spent waiting to run -- but wow, how cool to go to staging and immediately have Al and the others asking why we're not already suited up and ready to run. And the lines in staging were nice and short -- no big process to try to guess which would be the shortest wait to run.
Yep, I'm very pleased with the pre-stage system. Knowing that about 10 vehicles at a time are released to go to staging was cool -- we racers in line had a very good idea of how long we'd be waiting, and the volunteers at the pre-stage line were kind enough to mosey back about 15-20 vehicles to tell us about how much longer we'd have to wait.
Do it again, Dan -- and everyone. Thanks.

My first LSR Ride was in #300 at Muroc in 2000 when Ed owned the Roadster, Sold Keith Turk our extra entry, starting position #36, he scored a Red Hat in the Girly Camaro.
-
Muroc 200 MPH club is a blue hat Mike. Turk did in fact earn one. He wanted to impound and cert the car with a 197(?) I told him to take another shot at it, ended up at 205 if I remember correctly.

It's really great that racers are getting used to pre-stage. At firdt there was a lot of griping "I'm just 15th, why can't I go?" OK sure, but the line is just as long and makes the starters jobs harder, clutters up a small space and you'll get to wait longer buttoned up--go ahead. The best racers make for the best race.
